2021 IEEE 10th International Conference on Information and Automation for Sustainability 11 – 13 August 2021 Tutorials

Tutorial Title: Geometric Control with Applications to Robotics

Sanjeeva Maithripala

Senior Member, IEEE Sri Lanka Technological Campus Sri Lanka

Date: 11/10/2021 Time: 08.00 am – 10.00 am (IST) Location: Stage

Tutorial Abstract

Unmanned vehicles have become ubiquitous. A few examples are Multi Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles, Wheeled Mobile Robots, and Balancing Robots. Today the sensing and computing technology has developed to a level where it is now possible to impart to these devices a certain ability to learn and some sense of intelligence at an affordable cost. Crucial to harnessing this full power of technology one must understand these systems in its most basic sense. Geometry is the key to developing this understanding. In this tutorial we will see how to look at these multitude of systems in a holistic manner using the tools of Geometric Mechanics. In the process we will see that in the most basic sense, however complicated these systems may appear, they have a simple double integrator mathematical representation. Realizing this allows us to extend and utilize simple control strategies like PID control that are for instance easily amenable to a setting that involves automatic tuning using modern learning algorithms in a much more computationally tractable way.

Tutorial Abstract

The goal of this tutorial is to provide a holistic exposition on the topic of machine learning for wireless network design. We will first provide a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of machine learning and artificial neural networks, which are one of the most important pillars of machine learning. After providing a substantial introduction to the basics of machine learning, we introduce a classification of the various types of neural networks. For each type, we provide an introduction on their basic components, their training processes, and their use cases with specific example neural networks. Then, we overview a broad range of wireless applications that can make use of neural network designs. This range of applications includes spectrum management, multiple radio access technology cellular networks, wireless virtual reality, mobile edge computing and caching, drone-based communications, the Internet of Things, and vehicular networks. For each application, we first outline the main rationale for applying machine learning while pinpointing illustrative scenarios. Then, we overview the challenges and opportunities brought forward by the use of neural networks in the specific wireless application. We will then focus on the emerging area of distributed federated learning, while exposing its main challenges and opportunities, particularly within the context of wireless networks. We complement this overview with a detailed example drawn from the state-of-the-art. Finally, we conclude by shedding light on the potential future works within the overall area of AI for wireless networks

2021 IEEE 10th International Conference on Information and Automation for Sustainability 11 – 13 August 2021 Keynote: Imagination Machines; A New Challenge for Artificial Intelligence

Sridhar Mahadevan

Fellow of AAAI Director of Data Science Lab at Adobe University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Date: 13/10/2021 Time: 08.00 am – 08.45 am (IST) Location: Stage

Keynote Abstract The aim of this paper is to propose a new overarching challenge for AI: the design of imagination machines. Imagination has been defined as the capacity to mentally transcend time, place, and/or circumstance. Much of the success of AI currently comes from a revolution in data science, specifically the use of deep learning neural networks to extract structure from data. This paper argues for the development of a new field called imagination science, which extends data science beyond its current realm of learning probability distributions from samples. Numerous examples are given in the paper to illustrate that human achievements in the arts, literature, poetry, and science may lie beyond the realm of data science, because they require abilities that go beyond finding correlations: for example, generating samples from a novel probability distribution different from the one given during training; causal reasoning to uncover interpretable explanations; or analogical reasoning to generalize to novel situations (e.g., imagination in art, representing alien life in a distant galaxy, understanding a story about talking animals, or inventing representations to model the large-scale structure of the universe). We describe the key challenges in automating imagination, discuss connections between ongoing research and imagination, and outline why automation of imagination provides a powerful launching pad for transforming AI.

2021 IEEE 10th International Conference on Information and Automation for Sustainability 11 – 13 August 2021 Keynote: Smart Radio Environments Empowered by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces How it Works, State of Research, and the Road Ahead Marco Di Renzo

Fellow, IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, IEEE Vehicular Technology Society and IEEE ComSoc CNRS Research Director (CNRS Professor) Laboratory of Signals and Systems, CentraleSupelec, Paris-Saclay University, Paris, France

Date: 13/10/2021 Time: 01.30 pm – 02.15 pm (IST) Location: Stage

Keynote Abstract

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are an emerging transmission technology for application to wireless communications. RISs can be realized in different ways, which include (i) large arrays of inexpensive antennas that are usually spaced half of the wavelength apart; and (ii) metamaterial-based planar or conformal large surfaces whose scattering elements have sizes and inter-distances much smaller than the wavelength. Compared with other transmission technologies, e.g., phased arrays, multi-antenna transmitters, and relays, RISs require the largest number of scattering elements, but each of them needs to be backed by the fewest and least costly components. Also, no power amplifiers are usually needed. For these reasons, RISs constitute a promising software-defined architecture that can be realized at reduced cost, size, weight, and power (C-SWaP design), and are regarded as an enabling technology for realizing the emerging concept of smart radio environments (SREs). In this talk, the speaker will (i) introduce the emerging research field of RIS-empowered SREs; (ii) overview the most suitable applications of RISs in wireless networks; (iii) present an electromagnetic-based communication-theoretic framework for analyzing and optimizing metamaterial-based RISs; (iv) provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research; and (v) discuss the most important research issues to tackle. Owing to the interdisciplinary essence of RIS-empowered SREs, finally, the speaker will put forth the need of reconciling and reuniting C. E. Shannon’s mathematical theory of communication with G. Green’s and J. C. Maxwell’s mathematical theories of electromagnetism for appropriately modelling, analyzing, optimizing, and deploying future wireless networks empowered by RISs.

2021 IEEE 10th International Conference on Information and Automation for Sustainability 11 – 13 August 2021

Special session 1- Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Computational Intelligence for Wireless communication (MDCWC 2021) Keynote: Demystifying the Spectrum with Machine Learning for Beyond 5G

Jithin Jagannath IEEE senior member, Chief Technology Scientist and Director of ANDRO Computational Solutions, LLC Adjunct Assistant Professor, University of Buffalo, USA

Abstract The exponential trajectory of growth of number wireless devices today and in the near future is well known to the community. Future communication networks must address the scarce spectrum to accommodate extensive growth of heterogenous wireless devices. Efforts are underway to address spectrum coexistence, enhance spectrum awareness, and bolster authentication schemes. Wireless signal recognition is becoming increasingly more significant for spectrum monitoring, spectrum management, secure communications, among others. Consequently, comprehensive spectrum awareness on the edge has the potential to serve as a key enabler for the emerging beyond 5G (fifth generation) networks. State-of-the-art studies in this domain have (i) only focused on a single task - modulation or signal (protocol) classification - which in many cases is insufficient information for a system to act on, (ii) consider either radar or communication waveforms (homogeneous waveform category), and (iii) does not address edge deployment during the neural network design phase. In this talk, the speaker will discuss how his team is leveraging the potential of deep neural networks based multi-task learning (MTL) framework to simultaneously learn modulation and signal classification tasks while considering heterogeneous wireless signals such as radar and communication waveforms in the electromagnetic spectrum. The proposed MTL architecture benefits from the mutual relation between the two tasks in improving the classification accuracy as well as the learning efficiency with a lightweight neural network model. The talk additionally touches upon experimental evaluations of the model with over-the-air collected samples and demonstrate first-hand insight on model compression along with deep learning pipeline for deployment on resource-constrained edge devices.
