BIOGRAPHIES OF MISSIONARIES of the DISCIPLES OF CHRIST • 9oreworJ--_,, From that day in January, 1886, when Dr. William E. Macklin landed in Shanghai, a lone missionary, to begin the work of the Disciples of Christ in China, a long list of devoted men and women have served in our China mission. Their terms of service· have ranged from a few months to forty years, but each has made his individual and significant contribution to China and the Christian movement. In this series of biographies we bring together brief sketches of the lives and work of these people. The sketches in the earlier China biography set, prepared by Miss Edith Eberle, have been used as the basis for many in this new series. Miss Lois Anna Ely has revised and rewritten these, in­ cluding current information out of her own intimate knowledge and from that generously provided by the missionaries themselves and their relatives and friends. Sbe has added sketches of the newer missionaries to make the list complete as of the spring of 1948. To all who have thus had a part in making this series possible, we express the gratitude of the Mis­ sionary Education Depattment. The sketches can of necessity only hint at heroic and radiant living be­ hind rather prosaic records of births and deaths, of comings and goings . China missionaries of the Disciples of Christ have known privation and danger , distrust and suspicion, indifference and opposition; they have ex­ perienced revolutions from within and invasion from without ; but they have also known the high joys of suffering alleviated, of ignorance dis­ pelled, of souls illuminated and lives regenerated by the love of God , of fellowship with Chinese Christian friends in soul-testing and in heart­ warming experiences, of seeing come into being, and of being a part of, a vital, growing church in China . The future of the Christian movement in China rests upon a con­ tinuance and a strengthening of the friendship , encouragement, and Chri~­ tian helpfulness which the young church of China needs. Chinese Chris­ tians long for the help of missionaries from the West. As we of the West ­ ern church read the records of these whose lives have been given to the building of the church in China, may we be stirred to greater determination that the work there shall be strengthened and extended . Gembloux, Belgium, Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, University of Liège, 140 pages, 22 tables, 17 figures. Abstract Crop straw (agricultural residue) is one of the most important biomass resources in China. Crop straw is either burned in the field or collected for recycling. Open burning of crop straw releases particulate matter and gaseous pollutants, which play a key role in poor air quality, prompting heavy haze episodes during the harvest season. Such episodes threaten human health and interfere with social and economic activities. In contrast, recycling of crop straw reduces open burning and avoids its negative environmental impacts. In fact, improving the efficiency of straw use contributes to a circular economy, dedicated to reducing waste, while also making the best use of any ‘waste’ in economically viable processes that increase its value. Returning straw to agricultural fields in China is the easiest solution and the most important measure promoted by governments promising clean technologies to replace open burning.

Mo lam refers to an expert of lam singIng who Is routInely accompanIed by a mo khaen, a skIlled player of the bamboo panpIpe. DurIng 1972 and 1973, Dr. ChonpaIrot conducted fIeld studIes on Mo lam in northeast Thailand and Laos with Dr. Terry E. Miller. For many generatIons, LaotIan and Thai villagers have crossed the natIonal border constItuted by the Mekong RIver to visit relatIves and to partIcipate In regular festivals. However, ChonpaIrot and Miller’s fieldwork took place durIng the fInal stages of the VIetnam War which had begun more than a decade earlIer. DurIng theIr fIeldwork they collected cassette recordings of lam singIng from LaotIan radIo statIons In VIentIane and Savannakhet. The first is the valorization of physical labor as a path to positive social reform and personal enlightenment. The second is a dialectical approach to epistemology, in which world-knowing is connected to world-making. In both cases, dancers in China found themselves, their bodies, and their work at the center of conflicting ideals, often in which the state upheld, through its policies and standards, what seemed to be conflicting points of view and directions of action. Since they occupy the unusual position of being cultural workers who labor with their bodies, dancers were successively the heroes and the victims in an ever unresolved national debate over the value of mental versus physical labor.

    Resigned Urbanization: Migration, Dwelling, and Freedom in Contemporary China Tzu-Chi Ou Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Tzu-Chi Ou All rights reserved ABSTRACT Resigned Urbanization: Migration, Dwelling, and Freedom in Contemporary China Tzu-Chi Ou In the media, rural migrants are often seen as a homogeneous social group, displaced from hometowns, economically marginalized, and deprived of urban citizenship. Anything but freedom characterizes their subjectivities. In recent years, however, migrant workers have played a leading role in urbanizing small towns and cities. My two-year ethnographic research closely documents the phenomenon of “double dwelling,” in which rural migrants settle into the rental housing of Beijing’s urban villages, on the one hand, but own empty houses in rural villages and counties, on the other. I employ the idea of dwelling to conceptualize the interrelationship between identity and place as well as existence and space. Rather than being static, floating, or unfinished, double dwelling is dynamic, restricted by the household registration (hukou) division but also continually remaking the rural-urban divide. It is rooted in various sites, neither here nor there but always here and there. Migrant workers create and search for the nature of dwelling. To doubly dwell is to build and rebuild identities and existence. The dissertation engages with the study of class politics by reconsidering the role of housing in class formation. On the one hand, home-making practices bring new opportunities to migrant workers. While in Beijing, the housing conditions of migrant workers suggest a common ground on which a new social class of migrant tenants may form.

    Theories of Genre and Style in China in the Late 20th Century Lena Rydholm In Chinese literary theories, since ancient times up to the late 20 th century, the term wenti (originally just ti ) has been used to denote both what we may roughly translate as “style” and “genre”. 1 The concepts of “genre” and “style” were hence not clearly separated. In the abundant literary theories up to the late Qing dynasty, much effort was made to separate and describe the characteristics of genres and to create func- tionalist genre systems to be used by writers/bureaucrats. Discussions of the concept of wenti itself, however, were scarce in these theories. In many literary theories up to the late 19 th century the traditional, didactic view of the function of literature as a vehicle for the Confucian way, moral instruction, 2 and maintaining the social order prevailed; hence content was often stressed at the expense of form and aesthetic qualities. The period around the May Fourth Era in the 1920s offered relative free- dom for the individual artist, influence by Western literary theories, experimenta- tion, and “art for art’s sake”. 3 But the dominant feature of the modern literary theo- ries from the 1940s up to the late 1980s was their emphasis on evaluating the con- tent of literary works based on political and moral values, rather than analysing form, style, language, and aesthetic features. This was a result of the interference of politics in literature and literary research, which severely obstructed literary crea- tion, especially during the Cultural Revolution, and led to almost complete stagna- tion in the fields of genre theory and stylistics.

A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial Fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures Comittee Chair: Maria Paz Moreno, Ph.D. 2016 i Abstract This work both reconstructs and demystifies Spain’s poetic literary field at the dawn of the 21st century, during which a cultural conflict brewed between the centralized and hegemonic “poets of experience” and the marginalized and counter-hegemonic “poets of difference”. Surging quickly to national notoriety and canonicity after the publication of their 1982 manifesto, the immense literary and social influence of the poets of experience began to fall out of favor by the early 1990s. This cultural ebbing allowed for the emergence of a new group, the poets of difference, who sought for an innovative, individualistic, aesthetic and their own place in the rich lineage of Spanish poetry. By employing the sociocultural theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Itamar Even-Zohar, this work examines the social discourses and mechanisms of this particular ethos in order to bring light to the heterodox poets of difference as portrayed through the works of Federico Gallego Ripoll and Juan Carlos Mestre. ii iii Abstract 0.
