He holds a doctorate from the University of Birmingham, where he taught in the English Department from 1960 until 1987, when he retired to become a full-time writer. He retains the title of Honorary Professor of Modern English Literature at Birmingham and continues to live in that city. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. His novels include The Picturegoers (1960), Ginger, You’re Barmy (1962); The British Museum is Falling Down (1965);Out of the Shelter (1970); Changing Places (1975), for which he was awarded both the Hawthornden Prize and the Yorkshire Post Fiction Prize; How Far Can You Go?, which was Whitbread Book of the Year in 1980; Small World, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1984; Nice Work, which won the 1988 Sunday Express Book of the Year Award and was also shortlisted for the Booker Prize; Paradise News (1991) and Therapy (1995). David Lodge has written several books on literary criticism, such as Language of Fiction (1966), The Novelist at the Crossroads (1971), and The Modes of Modern Writing (1977). He has also edited Modern Criticism and Theory (1988). Many of his works have been published by Penguin, such as Write On (1986), a collection of occasional essays and The Art of Fiction (1992), a selection of articles originally published in the Independent on Sunday. -
John Le Carré's the Secret Pilgrim and the End of the Cold
John le Carré’s The Secret Pilgrim and the End of the Cold War Jonathan Goodwin Abstract. The Secret Pilgrim was John le Carré’s first novel to consider the end of the cold war. The author describes how the novel’s embedded structure reveals le Carré’s political perspective more clearly than previous works and argues that this narrative frame is an adaptation to the sud- den collapse of le Carré’s traditional subject matter. In a speech given at University of Edinburgh, John le Carré remarked that only the spy novel could reveal the world’s hidden agendas (qtd. in Atwood 21). His own represen- tational agendas of betrayal and duplicity in the cold war (and after) are revealed in an unusual way in his The Secret Pilgrim (1990). The book, which contains a series of discrete episodes linked with a frame narrative, reveals the relationship between le Carré’s politi- cal thought and narrative technique more clearly than any of his other works because of the bareness of its structure. A source for le Carré’s title may be Rupert Brooke’s poem “Dust”: And every mote, on earth or air, Will speed and gleam, down later days, And like a secret pilgrim far By eager and invisible ways, Nor ever rest, nor ever lie, Till, beyond thinking, out of view, One mote of all the dust that’s I Shall meet one atom that was you. (49) The transmutation of the body into its elements in death, and the romantic possibility of preservation of some spirit beyond it, are the immediate references in Brooke’s poem; the particulate imagery of atoms and motes is also significant. -

It focuses on John Le Carré’s novel “Russia House” which was published in “Foreign Literature” in 1990. The publication was of great socio-political, cultural and historical significance, as it cast major discredit upon the existing totalitarian regime. However, according to the researcher, the value of the novel goes far beyond its criticism of socialism and totalitarianism. It provides a broad historical and cultural critique of civilization and mentality. Introduction Hardly anyone would dispute the significance of “Inostrannaya literature” magazine in the life of Soviet society. At the same time, we should clearly understand the dependence of publications on the political situation prevailing in the country. The reason a totalitarian regime is totalitarian is that it keeps everything under its control. -

The Russia House (1990), Directed by Fred Schepisi By Fearless Young Orphan The British (though obviously Scottish) owner of a publishing company is drawn into the spy game when a Russian scientist tries to smuggle a tell-all book about Soviet nuclear capabilities out of the country and into publication. In the process, the publisher falls in love with a Russian book editor who is serving as go- between, and eventually they must avoid capture and death when the KGB discovers their plans. The movie is based on a novel by John Le Carre, and is set in the last gasp of the Soviet Union, the age of glasnost. The Russia House has a great many qualities to recommend it that have little bearing on the actual plot of the film. First and of foremost relevance to me is the presence of James Bond himself, Mr. Sean Connery, in the lead role of publisher- turned-spy Barley Blair. Yeah I know, the name is a bit off. Still, he is a presence to be reckoned with. Barley is an ex-patriot living in Lisbon and enamored with Russia, but he wants to see that country come out from under its regime to the new world. His ideology is what attracts the scientist, code name Dante, to choose him as the method of delivery for this top-secret book. Sean Connery is sort of a scream in this situation – playing a reticent, non-spying, idealistic literary type when he is so obviously James Bond. Again and again he reassures people that “he is not a spy,” but I always felt like he was winking. -

He was 89. The cause was pneumonia, his publisher, Penguin Random House, said on Sunday. Before Mr. le Carré published his best-selling 1963 novel “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold,” which Graham Greene called “the best spy story I have ever read,” the fictional model for the modern British spy was Ian Fleming’s James Bond — suave, urbane, devoted to queen and country. With his impeccable talent for getting out of trouble while getting women into bed, Bond fed the myth of spying as a glamorous, exciting romp. Although the genre remains not well researched in Croatian literary studies, the translated work of British writer and theorist David Lodge enabled a passage into the British university community and thus became a representative specimen of British prose. In accordance with the genre, Marinko Koščec’s Wonderland and Dražen Ilinčić’s Posljednji korak paint a picture of the atmosphere in Croatian universities and make way for comparative research. Keywords academic novel, David Lodge, Marinko Koščec, Dražen Ilinčić Introduction The academic novel, also known as the university novel, the campus novel and the college novel, belongs to the genre of academic satire, and became fully affirmed in the early 1950’s, first in the United States, and then in Great Britain. Its earliest genre classification is linked to American literary theorist and historian John O. Lyons who in his book The College Novel in America (1962) considers the academic novel to be a novel about academic life “one in which higher education is treated with seriousness and the main characters are students and professors” (Lyons, 1962, p. xvii). Lyons begins his historic overview with Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Fanshawe (1828), and ends it with Louis Simpsons Riverside Drive (1962). -

ENGL 3010 Spy Stories [email protected] Spring 2020 StokesS 454, 2-3702 StokesS 476 OH: Tues 2-3, Wed 10-12 The Bible, the Odyssey, and ancient Chinese and Indian manuals of war all describe spycraft and secret agents; the Spanish inquisition invented ‘waterboarding’; when George Washington’s first amateur spy, Nathan Hale, was caught and hanged after just a week, the General paid out of his own pocket to establish America’s first intelligence ring. This “secret world” disturbs the ideal of political and historical “transparency.” The moral ambiguity of this “second oldest profession,” with its seductions and aliases, its “agents” and “handlers” and “moles,” troubles the notions of patriotism, “agency,” identity itself. And makes for compelling fiction. Rudyard Kipling remarked: “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten” (Life’s Handicap.) The same probably goes for psychology. We’ll begin this course with what many call the first significant Spy Story, a mashup of the detective story and the exotic adventure story, Rudyard Kipling’s Kim (1901). Kim follows an orphan boy with a mysterious identity from adolescence to early maturity. The stage is India; the political situation is the Afghan War – of 1881! One strand of the plot is “The Great Game” --espionage between the British Empire and an expanding Russia. Our second text is John Le Carré’s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963), a “Cold War” story that gave another valuable phrase to the genre. Then, after two classes on spy stories in films, we’ll read a final text, David Ignatius’s 2017 The Quantum Spy, a contemporary take on The Great Game between another two empires, the American and the Chinese.
