Executive Summary Prepared for Board of Trustees
Agendum 6 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY PREPARED FOR BOARD OF TRUSTEES April 2009 Purpose To update the Board on progress and achievements in December, January and February and the tasks and targets for March to May 2009. 1. Developing our museum spaces and bringing the visitor experience to life Masterplanning Masterplanning proposals for St Fagans continue to be developed in preparation for the June meeting and a number of benchmarking visits to other institutions, which are developing concepts in a similar way, have been undertaken. At the National Museum Cardiff we have now received the RIBA Stage D report for the Upper West Wing, and have undertaken discussions with CADW and the local planning authority to try and ensure that the new ceiling reflects the existing pyramidal shape in Gallery 24. This has been agreed informally although it is likely to have an implication for the final tender costs. The design team has now been mobilised to commence detail design work and will submit a planning and listed building consent application shortly. A quantity surveyor has been appointed to firm up costs for the Clore Duffield Learning Spaces project. The design of the spaces is currently being finalised by the Project Management Group. Buildings and Estates Work to replace the car park barrier at the National Museum Cardiff has commenced and is being implemented to programme. Tenders have been received for the renewal of the Building Management system which, once completed, will provide much greater control over the environmental conditions across our sites. Work will also commence shortly on the control of the gallery lighting system at the National Museum Cardiff. -

The Gatehouse This is the entrance to Abergavenny Castle, it is called the Gatehouse. It is a barbican gatehouse . A barbican was a wall or tower which protected a castle from attack. The Gatehouse today When Abergavenny Castle was first built, over 900 years ago, the gate was just a simple opening in the castle walls. What can you see? Abergavenny Castle Trail The Gatehouse On the first floor above the gate were comfortable rooms for the Constable of the Castle and his family to live in. The Constable was in charge of the Castle when the Lord was away. The room had a fireplace, large windows and access to the walkways along the walls, as well as a winch to lower or raise the drawbridge. You might be able to spot the two holes above the opening where the chains have worn the stone away? TaTaTakeTa ke a close look at the walls either side of the opeopening.ning. Can you spot any holes where the huge metal door hinges might have been? We think that this stone-built Gatehouse was added about 600 years ago. At this time the Welsh, led by Owain Glyn Dŵr (Owen Glendower) were fighting the Normans who were in control of much of Wales. PRESS RELEASE HAPPY MUSEUM The groundbreaking Happy Museum announces a third round of awards as part of a wider programme funded by Arts Council England’s Renaissance Strategic support fund and CyMAL, Wales. 10 museums and galleries from England and Wales have been selected to show how museums can support the transition to a high well-being, sustainable society - bringing the total of Happy Museum Commissions to 22. Launched in April 2011, the Happy Museum ProJect is a pioneering programme that looks at how museums in the UK can build links between sustainability and well-being to leave a legacy of long- term cultural change within their organisations and communities. An initial first round of six awards in 2011, followed by another six in 2012, demonstrated that the Happy Museum Manifesto was in step with the increasing number of academics, economists, psychologists and ecologists in identifying the vital linkage between sustainability and wellbeing. The practical work of the Happy Museum commissions helps to shed light on how thinking of these two issues in conJunction might offer the key to providing a better future. This third phase of Happy Museum commissions is launched with awards of over £100,000 and explores how museums build deeper dialogues with their local communities; engaging young people in understanding science, climate change and sustainability; strengthening community resilience through combining comedy and heritage; a community co-designing and ‘fitting-out’ the ground floor of a Silk Mill; inspiring children with creative play and craft; making an abbey a place that encourages environmental good practice and wellbeing and promoting social enterprise through traditional crafts. -

Arts 13 Amgueddfa Cymru
Background Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales was established by Royal Charter in 1907. The Museum receives its core funding through grant-in-aid from the Welsh Government as a Welsh Government Sponsored Body. Its Charter objective is ‘the advancement of the education of the public’ involving developing, caring for, studying and sustaining access to Wales’s national museum collections for the benefit of society in perpetuity. Amgueddfa Cymru’s Vision, published following significant internal and external discussion and consultation, is to become ‘a world class museum of learning’ and we believe that we are well on our way to delivering this ambitious commitment. For the context of this submission, it is important to note that Amgueddfa Cymru is a provider of a broad range of arts and cultural activities relating to art, history, science, music, drama, creative- writing, dance, photography and these all include elements of active participation. Through the leading role the Museum plays in this cultural and heritage provision, education, skills and tourism, we make a positive contribution to the social and economic life of Wales. With over 450,000 formal and informal education visits, Amgueddfa Cymru also provides many routes into life-long learning and training - all of which are crucial at a time of financial constraint. The annual survey is designed to monitor trends in the tourist attraction sector in Wales. This report provides a summary of key data from the 2017 survey, which was conducted by Beaufort Research between May to early July 2018. A detailed report providing full data will follow in autumn 2018. For 2017 the majority of fieldwork was conducted via an online survey, although a few attractions chose to email back a completed form or to answer the questions over the phone.
