The Museum is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Milford Haven. Designed by Swansea architect, Jernigan, it was built in 1797 for the storage of whale oil awaiting transhipment for sale in London.

Milford Haven has been connected with a number of industries - fishing, Quaker whaling from 1790s, which led to the whale oil industry and more recently the modern oil industry. It has also played an important role during the two World Wars, when it was a convoy assembly point for mine-sweeping. The Museum collection reflects all of these aspects of the town’s history, but focuses particularly on the maritime history.

Penrhos Cottage

Penrhos’ translates as ‘on the edge of the moor’ and this traditional north Pembrokeshire thatched cottage has survived, almost unchanged, since it was built in the early nineteenth century. According to local tradition the cottage was built overnight on commonland.

The ‘Ty Un Nos’, or ‘overnight house’, had to be built in one night between sunset and sunrise. The intending occupier, having gathered together all his friends and relations, would proceed to a suitable site and work would begin as the sun set. If the house was completed, with smoke rising from the chimney by sunrise, the builder could then lay claim to all the land within a stone’s throw of the door. Needless to say, these houses were very badly built and around 1849 Penrhos had to be rebuilt in stone.

Pontypridd Museum

The museum depicts the industrial, social and cultural history of Pontypridd, emphasizing the distinctive history of the town. Paintings and other works of art celebrate William Edwards’ bridge, close to the museum, which was built in 1756 and became famous as the first in Europe to exceed the span of the Rialto in Venice. Personal items belonging to Evan and James James remind us that the Welsh national anthem was composed here in 1856. We highlight the achievements of well-known Pontypridd musicians, singers and sportspeople as well as popular crafts from nineteenth- century sampler-making to twentieth-century pigeon racing. We are now trying to collect evidence to illustrate the mixed origins of the people of the town, mostly Welsh, English and Irish, but also Italian, Jewish, Polish and other more recent arrivals

Quarry Hospital

The high accident rate amongst workers at the Dinorwig slate quarry led to the construction of a hospital near the quarry. Having a hospital close to the quarry allowed workers to get back to work with minimal delay after receiving treatment. The building dates from 1840 and closed in the 1960 when mining ceased at the quarry. It was one of the first hospitals in the country to have an Xray machine. The hospital is now a museum and has a collection of medical equipment from the 1800s. The xray machine is still there and a ward and an operating theatre have been restored to their original state.
