Film Screening: Calais Children: A Case to Answer Yorkshire Museum, Wednesday 20 June, 2.30pm – 4pm early years & family events Why did the UK leave nearly 2,000 children in the Calais Jungle as it burnt… when many had a legal | right to be in the UK? And what happened to them next? Winner of the London Independent Film Awards 2017, Calais Children: A Case to Answer follows the young people over the year since they left the Jungle with interviews with Lord Dubs, volunteer groups, and lawyers. The film will be followed by Q&As with the director, Sue Clayton. Donations will be accepted towards the Calais Children’s ongoing support. FREE. No need to book. talks York Dance Space Sunday 17 June, Performances at 11am and 2pm Enjoy a performance of contemporary movement and dance in and amongst the gallery displays. Age is Just a Number (over 50s dance company) and York Youth Dance have worked together to create their response to York Art Gallery. Included in gallery admission. No need to book. YARN (Yorkshire Art Teachers Regional Network) Thursday 21 June, 5pm – 7pm The Yorkshire Art and Design Teachers Network meet each half term at York Art Gallery. Teachers are welcome from all phases and meetings are an opportunity to share good practice, discuss joint and local initiatives and update on issues affecting art and art education. Bring your ideas, skills and colleagues for a professional and social networking opportunity. This meeting will include the opportunity to attend the private view for the opening of the Lucie Rie exhibition in the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) at York Art Gallery Included in gallery admission. YMT Residents’ Weekend – Studio Drop-in Sunday 24 June, 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm The Studio will be open for all to take part in practical art activities inspired by The Sea is the Limit exhibition. Sensory Tour for Adults early years & family events | Sunday 8 July, 12.30pm – 1.15pm Lucie Rie’s ceramic buttons. Nick Ellwood: Drawing on Experience practical workshops | Saturday 14 July, 1pm – 3pm A practical workshop with artist Nick Elwood exploring reportage drawing and sketching techniques. talks £15 per person, includes gallery admission. Mindfulness Based Creativity Course Tuesdays 25 September; 2, 9, 16, 23 October; and 6, 13, 20 November, 10.30am – 1.30pm Mindfulness Based Creativity (MBCr) is an 8-week group course exploring the relationship between mindfulness and creativity as a means of playfully enhancing wellbeing and getting in touch with living the life we always imagined. It provides an exploration of mindfulness meditation and creative writing and drawing exercises in each session. With Dr Lauri Bower of the Northern Centre for Mindfulness and Compassion and professional artist Clare Belbin-Carlile. £250 early bird, or £275 for the 8 weeks. YMT Membership is also required for this course (£22 max. concessions are available.) For further information or to book your place, please visit: yorkmbsr.eventbrite.co.uk yorkmuseumstrust.org.uk 4 / 6 York Art Gallery DISCOVER June – September 2018 early years & family events Pick a Favourite: Make a Wish Wednesday 1 August – Friday 31 August, 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm Inspired by the Friends of York Art Gallery and the 70 years of Giving Art exhibition, choose and draw your favourite artwork in the display. Add your ideas and suggestions for new artworks for the gallery to the ‘wish-list wall’ in the Studio. Your drawing can earn you an Arts Award sticker (see below). early years & family events Included in gallery admission. No need to book. | Arts Award Discover An introductory award aimed at 5 to 9 year olds (although any child can take part). York Museums Trust, Explore York Libraries and Archives, York Minster, York Army Museum and York Theatre Royal are offering children the opportunity to gain Arts Award Discover through taking practical workshops | part in any three creative activities and finding out about artists and crafts people. Collect a stamp or sticker at each activity then come to the either York Explore on Friday 31 August talks or The Marquee in Dean’s Park on Saturday 1 September between 1pm and 3pm to complete your award by telling us what you did. Remember you need to tell us what you have learnt about an artist too. After talking to you we will apply for an Arts Award certificate for you which will be posted to your home. There is a cost of £4 for this certificate. York Museums Trust provides a range of activities and events for children under 5 to help them engage with the collections and exhibitions. We currently offer two types of Museum Monkeys sessions across our sites: Museum Baby for under 2s and Early Years Explorers for ages 2 – 5. Kids Go FREE plus there’s FREE entry for adults with a YMT Card – 12 months of unlimited access to all York Museums Trust sites. Museum Baby (Under 2s), Paper & Wood Friday 15 June, 10am – 11am Investigate how to crinkle, rip and roll paper. Play in the shredded paper and textured wood sensory area. Sessions are now FREE!
