WWW.PETRUTHPADDOCKS.CO.UK 1 A very warm welcome to Petruth Paddocks!

We do hope that you had a safe journey without too many hold-ups and that our directions were easy to follow?

You’re probably in need of a rest so once you’re set up with a drink in your hand, put your feet up and take a little time to read on.

A little background:

Petruth Paddocks was named after Jules’s parents - Peter and Ruth and we opened the livery yard you can see as you enter the gate in early 2002

Some of you may well have stayed at Church Farm many years ago – well it was Roger Durston (who used to own Church farm) who suggested that our field would be an ideal location for people to stay and in 2003 we welcomed our first guests.

Since then Petruth Paddocks has become the alternative venue for those seeking freedom from unnecessary regulations – a place where you, your friends and family can enjoy whatever outdoor life means to you – whatever your age, whoever you are, we simply ask that you respect those around you – why not say hello and understand what outdoor life means to them?

We’re always looking for ways to improve the Paddocks without losing the “festival feel” of the place so let us know of any suggestions you may have for improvements that would add to your enjoyment.

If you have any issues with other people staying on the site, please press the bell on our Reception door or call Steve on 07912 608519 or Jules on 07813 320870 – We’re here to take care of these things 24/7 – you’re here to enjoy yourselves!

3 One or two questions?

We live here and it’s easy to forget that you probably have some basic questions so here’s our attempt at providing some answers.

1. Stuff on site

Where do we pitch? We’ll explain this to you when you arrive – we’re pretty relaxed about where you go – just bear the following in mind: • Some grass-pitches have power- hook-ups – please don’t pitch here unless you have pre-booked a hook-up. • There are bright red Fire-points and orange posts with taps on around the fields – please do not pitch directly in front of these! • There is a grass roadway marked by red lines. Please don’t pitch or park on it. • For obvious reasons we tend to pitch the large groups and parties furthest away so best decide now who you’d prefer as neighbours! • Once pitched, if you’re in a camper and decide to go out for a drive, we can’t guarantee you’ll have the same pitch when you return so please ask us for some cones to mark your pitch if we are busy!

Can we light a fire? Yes - in fact we can’t understand how you can camp without one! Around 5.30 onwards you’ll hear the put-put of a quad- bike dragging a trailer full of wood (and often children!) around the campsite dropping off fire drums, kindling, logs, paper and firelighters which we supply for a small charge. Charges are as follows and are paid in cash when we deliver: £2.00 per night fire drum hire (paid for X your stay on your first night) £8.00 gets you your first fire – logs, kindling, paper and a fire-lighter £5.00 for additional sacks of logs £2.00 for additional kindling Marshmallows & sticks are also available from reception. Please don’t burn your own wood as we graze animals on the land and need to know what’s being burnt.

4 Please take care – especially if small children are nearby. Familiarise yourself with your nearest Fire-Point. We will supply you with your fire-drum – please don’t burn on the grass and please site your drum at least 5 metres from any tents. We recommend you have a container of water nearby just in case of emergency and that you use it to put out your fire before you go to bed. We collect the drums so don’t worry about emptying them. If you use a disposable barbecue it MUST be off the ground, just ask for slabs at Reception. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOVER take it inside your tent – people die every year not realising the fact that these units emit carbon monoxide gas. Once used, please empty the contents into your fire drum and pop the tray into the correct recycling bin.

How do we deal with a fire-emergency? Whilst we’re on the topic of fires – should you believe there to be an emergency please use an extinguisher from one of the Fire-Points to deal with the problem and have someone sound the alarm-bell if you feel others may be in danger. Our Assembly point is the grass area behind the car park and Reception. In case of a major emergency, please make your way there. Any incident MUST be reported to reception and recorded in our Accident book.

I need medical attention! If you’ve hurt yourself in any way we’re here to help you. We have a fully stocked first aid kit, trained first aiders and will do our best to provide you with basic first aid supplies. Please report all accidents to reception as we need to keep a record.

Where is the nearest drinking water? There are taps all around the fields on orange posts and the water is fine for drinking. You might want to run the tap for a little while first though and please let us know of any leaks!

How about washing up? You can find our washing up points at either end of the toilets/showers. Please go careful on the volume of hot water and leave the sinks as you’d like to find them and no – you can’t bath the dog in them!

5 Toilets These are really for anyone who does not have their own facilities. Our disposal system can’t cope with huge numbers and we provide a separate chemical waste disposal tank for those with their own units which is sited just opposite the shower blocks. We clean the toilets 2-6 times a day depending upon how many folk are staying. Please let us know if you feel they need an additional clean or if loo paper or soap have run out and we’ve not spotted. Please only flush toilet paper away as our system can’t process anything more substantial – we provide bins for other stuff.

Showers Our showers each have individual compartments with room to change and hang clothes so use the first one you find empty. If you are an early riser you might have to wait a short while for the heat to come through but you should have a powerful jet and good heat so if you’re not getting that please let us know. On busy weekends you’re best showering before 7 or after 11!

Washing/shaving Those cool green sinks located between the toilets and showers are where you wash, shave and brush your teeth – please don’t use them to wash up utensils – thanks!

Like the toilets – we clean them regularly and simply need to know if you find them either damaged, faulty or not clean.

How do I get connected? Wi-Fi Connection is free! Just select Petruth Guest and enter the password: Pguest2016. You are now online! Please don’t download massive files as we have a limit on usage.

6 Please do upload pictures of your stay to our Facebook page- Petruth Paddocks Camping and if you’d like to leave us a review here’s where you can – thank you!

Where can we leave our rubbish? Please separate your waste from the start of your stay – otherwise we’ll be asking you to do it upon departure and that’s very yucky and not a great way to end your stay! Our waste point is to the left of the toilet/shower area and the bins are all clearly marked. If you need additional sacks please just ask one of us at reception.

The split works like this:

Tins, cans and plastic bottles

Card and paper

Glass

Food

The rest

7 Can we let our dog off in the fields? So long as your dog is friendly towards people and other animals, you are next to them and scoop their poop, you are welcome to let them off. Please be aware that whilst the fields are surrounded by a rhyne (a ditch), the fencing is not dog proof and sheep are sometimes in the adjacent field. Please put your doggy’s doings in bags and place them in the bins marked for dog-waste.

What about my ice-blocks? You can re-freeze your blocks in our information tent. Please mark them first. We might ask you to restrict numbers if we are really busy!

Where can I charge my device? There’s a charging locker in the information tent – the security of your phone rests with you though!

2. Rules – yes we do have some!

Sadly we can’t always rely on common sense so here are just a few mandatory rules that will be enforced. We rely on our guests to be our eyes and ears so if you spot these rules being broken, please let us know straight away:

Children We love having children here and watching them run freely about the place is all part of what we’re about. However, children must be accompanied to the toilet/wash area after 9pm. We ask that after dark children are no longer running around the site. Any children annoying other campers will be returned to their parents/guardians to deal with. If we have to ask twice we’ll be asking you to leave the next day – fair nuff?

8 Vehicle movement We ask you to keep this to an absolute minimum owing to the children running about all over the place. The speed limit is 5 MPH and this will be enforced. Any drivers who ignore this will be asked to leave. NO DRIVING is permitted to or from the toilets/reception or ANYTIME after dark. If we suspect anyone of driving having been drinking we WILL “escort you” off the site without discussion. When the ground is very wet we may well enforce a “no vehicle movement” policy which means that once you take your vehicle off-site it will stay off-site until you decide to leave. We will show you where to park should this arise. If your vehicle needs towing please do not ask any other campers to try and drag you out or sit there spinning your wheels - simply come and ask us and we’ll make sure you are towed safely and with the minimum of fuss or damage to the ground. We won’t charge you for this but neither will we accept any responsibility for damage to your vehicle – fair enough?

What about music? We operate on the basis that everyone respects each other and so far this has served us well. That means no bass-boxes and a sensible volume – not everyone is a Metallica fan. We ask that whatever you’re playing gets turned OFF at 10pm in the family field and 11pm in the chillout fieldsafter which chatting is fine but shouting is not. If noise is disturbing you please text Steve on 07912 608519 or Jules on 07813 320870 if you don’t get an immediate response please call either number – we’d prefer if this was at 11.30 rather than 2.30 but we’ll deal with it whatever the time. If it’s you causing a disturbance be aware, we’ll only ask once…….

Animals You may spot that we have some animals over by the stables. We very much want you to enjoy getting to know them but we can’t just have you wondering over there by yourselves as we have a duty of care. All visits must be accompanied by a member of our team and the times of these visits is advertised at reception. TEMPTING AS IT IS, PLEASE DON’T JUST WANDER OVER THERE – Thanks!

9 3. Stuff off-site

How do we walk/cycle into Cheddar? Well, there’s Cheddar village and ! You need to walk through the village to get to the Gorge. The village takes about 10 minutes and the Gorge a further 10 minutes and is signposted from the village. The Strawberry Line foot/cycle path leads from our gates directly to the village. As you arrive at our main entrance, look straight ahead and you’ll see a red post-box. Cross over the road towards it and you’ll pick up the footpath. There’s a children’s play-park on your left and after a further few minutes you can choose to turn right (this will bring you to Sainsbury’s and onto the Gorge) or continue straight on which will bring you out by Tesco’s Express and the village shops.

How about walking or cycling further afield? Well if you prefer a gentle stroll on level-land, you can exit the Chill-out field through the gate and head out left along the drove (unmade road) towards Nyland (that odd looking hill you can see south west of the Paddocks). The Strawberry line foot/cycle path previously referred to is a beautiful walk/ride taking you alongside the reservoir, through the medieval town of and onto , through Thatcher’s cider orchards and eventually Yatton. If you’re more adventurous and are looking to conquer a mountain, there are a number of footpaths off the Gorge that will take you on top of the directly above the Paddocks. Whatever you prefer, pick up a map from Reception and head on out!

Where do I buy food? Supermarkets There are two supermarkets in Cheddar – both are marked on the map at the back of this guide. Tesco Express can be found at the very end of the footpath into the village and is open till 10pm every day. Where can I get fuel? There are two options in Cheddar. The nearest one is Cheddar Motors – follow signs for the Gorge and then turn left at the mini roundabout. The garage can be found on the right after a short distance. The other option is the station on the main A371, Turn left onto the A371 and continue through Cheddar. You will find the garage at the top of a long straight just before you exit Cheddar.

Where’s the bus-stop? The bus stops for Wells or Weston are on the main A371 through Cheddar however if you ask nicely you can usually get dropped off at the entrance to the housing estate. Timetables are available from reception and we can advise you on which side of the road to stand in order to reach your destination.

There are numerous hairdressing shops in Cheddar but ‘Chops’ for Ladies is great 01934 744634 and is just on the right as you go through Cheddar just before you get to Lloyds Bank on the corner. Where can I fish? There are a number of local fishing lakes – best ask Jules if you’re interested in finding out where you can cast your float!

6. Other useful stuff to know:

I’ve heard there’s a garden centre nearby. Yes there is but you’ll need to drive there. Turn right onto the A371 and it’s about half a mile on the right hand side.

Tell me about the car boot sale: Well it’s on every Sunday from 6am to 1pm and it’s massive. Anything from 200-500 stalls and mainly private sellers. It’s held in the next field so you can walk to it by going through the small gate just along from reception

How about Church? If you are after a formal kind of thing, then the Anglican Church is half way along the footpath into Cheddar. If you’d prefer something a little more relaxed, then why not go along to the meeting at The King of Wessex School at the end of the footpath? It kicks off at 10.30am. 15 Need some retail therapy? The two nicest places to shop are Wells and Street. Wells is a lovely city with a good range of shops along with tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. Clarke’s Village at Street comprises of around 30-40 factory outlets of all sorts with easy parking and some great deals.

7. Local eating and drinking:

How about breakfast then?

Try:

The Café 01934 741171 just opposite the stone monument in the village – usually open around 9.30

Bit posher and more expensive is The Bath Arm Hotel opposite The Café

A 10 minute drive is a proper greasy spoon but with a lovely setting – The Lillypool Café 01934 741244 (BS25 1RQ)

A 20 minute drive and you’ll find the very best breakfast ever at Hartleys Kitchen 01749 841718 (BA3 4UL)

On Sunday mornings only big breakfasts are served at the car boot sale next door. Walk through the little gate by reception, turn right and follow the track.

Where are that places to eat? Well that rather depends upon what you want! The other thing is that places change so we are always a little reluctant to recommend however the following are our current favourites:

Great Fish and Chips? Tuckers tel: 01934 741212 – second Fish and chip shop on your left about 500 yds after you enter the Gorge. They offer a 10% discount to Petruth Paddocks guests – just show them this booklet.

16 Sandwiches, rolls, cakes and scones to die for: Between them, Cobbs the butchers, Hansfords the deli and Parsons the bakers hand make all of their goodies – delicious heart-warming pasties, real sandwiches (none of the sealed rubbish) and gorgeous but naughty cream cakes! Go-on treat yourself!

Want your food delivered? Just call Cheddar Pizza & Kebab kitchen 01934 743136 or A Slice of Heaven 01934 253473 - their pizzas are awesome – just tell them where your pitch is and they’ll deliver orders over £10.00 straight to your temporary home! Menus are available in the information tent.

Best cafés to eat in The nearest is The Café tel: 01934 741171 just opposite the stone monument in the village. Great food and great value. The Café is owned and run by a local church and is an ideal place to relax with friends and family – especially if the weather’s not so good.

Vegetarian or Vegan? The Lion Rock Tearooms 01934 742288 (BS27 3QE) take your need seriously so rather than worry about it we suggest you let them look after you!

Best pubs for beer and food in Cheddar (each of these will give you a discount off your food if you show them this booklet)

• The White Hart: 01934 741261 – Dog and child friendly both inside and out (BS27 3QN)

17 • The Galleries: 01934 744796 – good food, dog friendly and overlooks the hustle and bustle of the Gorge (BS27 3QA) • The Black Dog Saloon 01934 742809 Does what it says on the tin and does it well! (BS27 3PX) • The Kings Head 01934 744088 – the oldest pub in the area – great beer and light bites (BS27 3LE) • Cheddar Football Club: 01934 864600 - your nearest bar and place to watch live sports coverage. No food but good beer! (BS27 3RL) No deals on the one below as its primarily a locals pub but it is the nearest! • The Bath Arms: 01934 742425 - This is the only pub in Cheddar village and is our posh pub – if that’s more your cuppa tea (BS27 3AA)

Best pubs around Cheddar: The Inn 01749 870209 is a 5 minute drive and well known for great food, lots of it and great service. You’ll probably best booking in advance and not eating the day before! You can dine in the pub, conservatory or outside on the patio. (BS27 3XB)

If you like unusual/whacky pubs then take a walk to: • The Cider Barn – 01934 741837 just a 40 minute walk along the track at the bottom of the chill-out field – simple but great food and always a warm welcome! (BS27 3YB) or a drive to: • The Inn 01749 676677 - it’s about a 15 minute drive, really wacky and does great food. (BA5 1BP) • The Sheppey Inn 01458 831594 - 30 minute drive but worth every mile – it’s our favourite - you have to see it to believe it! (BA5 1RZ) • Wilcox Cider Shed 01934 842812 – amazing choice of ciders and simple but excellent food. All served with a smashing smile! (BS25 1UF)

Not whacky but we like them:

18 • We have two favourites in the Gorge - both serve great food with great service in a lovely setting. The Lion Rock Tearooms 01934 742288 (BS27 3QE) and Edelweiss Cafe-Restaurant 01934 742347 (BS273QA) • The Oak House Axbridge 01934 732444 - a 10 minute drive or 25 minute walk. (BS26 2AP) • The Queen Vic, 01749 676385 Great food, ale and service on top of the Mendips – one of our favorites! (BA5 3BA) • Hartleys Kitchen 01749 841718 (BA3 4UL) Not a pub but a fabulous bistro serving wonderful breakfasts and lunches till 4pm most days and within 20 minutes’ drive. (BA3 4UL) • The Almshouse tea-room 01934 733720 BS26 2AR is a delightful place to eat and natter after a walk along the Strawberry line. (BS26 2AR)

After a real Inn? There are three basic but genuine pubs to try, each with their very individual characteristics and no more than 10 minutes’ drive away. Ask Jules for more information on The Crown, the Hunters Lodge and The Trotters.

How about some Cider Sampling? There’s nowhere better to get a real taste of Somerset Cider than Roger Wilkin’s Cider Farm 01934 712385 just a 15 minute drive away. It’s what we call “rural like” – doesn’t come more basic then this but I guarantee you’ll come back warmer and happier than you left! Samples are usually by the half-pint…… Please either convince a non-drinker to drive or get a cab there. (BS28 4TU)

Best Chinese restaurant/take away in Cheddar The Riverside 01934 743958 is very good however we prefer the Thai 01934 740444 as the food is a little lighter and we think more tasty! A copy of their menus can be found at Reception so you can pre-order. They are opposite one another about 300 metres up the Gorge (the road that is – not the cliff!).

19 Best Curry in Cheddar The Cottage Indian restaurant is very good 01934 742331 can be found on the right as you walk or drive towards the Gorge, about 200 yards from the stone monument. They operate on the basis of “Bring your own” alcohol which keeps the price down. Your other option is Rasoi 01934 744230 just as you enter the Gorge.

Looking for something extra special? Why not try Franks? 01934 742761. As you walk on the left hand pavement up the Gorge, you will pass Tuckers. Take the next left over the river and Franks is on your left just before The White Hart. It’s not cheap but you know she’s worth it! Budget for around £40 per head with a sensible wine.

Want great beer to enjoy on site or take home? The Cheddar Ales brewery 01934 744193 is just a 5 minute walk from the Paddocks and opened its doors in 2006 – it’s based in a unit on the same estate as the car boot sale. Jem will be only too pleased to provide you with an ever- increasing range of fine ales in containers ranging from bottles to barrels. If you let him know in advance, he can organise Brewery tours for groups of between 10 and 30.

Like Chocolate? Thought so! The Cheddar Chocolate Factory is next door to the brewery and provides pretty much whatever you want in chocolate. I can arrange factory tours Monday to Friday for groups of 10+ (£10.00 per head) if notified a few days in advance or you can just call in to look around the shop.
