Throughout his career Paul has worked at the Natural History Museum, London which he joined soon after completing post-doctoral studies in Swansea which in turn followed his completion of a PhD in Durham. Paul’s research interests are polymatic within the sphere of bryozoology – he has studied fossil bryozoans from all of the geological periods, and modern bryozoans from all oceanic basins. His interests include taxonomy, biodiversity, skeletal structure, ecology, evolution, history to name a few subject areas; in fact there are probably none in bryozoology that have not been the subject of his many publications. His office in the Natural History Museum quickly became a magnet for visiting bryozoological colleagues whom he always welcomed: he has always been highly encouraging of the research efforts of others, quick to collaborate, and generous with advice and information. Charixa Lang and Spinicharixa gen. nov., cheilostome bryozoans from the Lower Cretaceous P. D. Taylor Department of Palaeontology, British Museum (Natural History), Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD Synopsis Seven species of non-ovicellate anascans with pluriserial to loosely multiserial colonies are described from the Barremian-Albian of Europe and Africa. The genus Charixa Lang is revised and the following species assigned: C. vennensis Lang from the U. Albian Cowstones of Dorset, C. Ihuydi (Pitt) from the U. Aptian Faringdon Sponge Gravel of Oxfordshire, C. cryptocauda sp. nov. from the Albian Mzinene Fm. of Zululand, C. lindiensis sp. nov. from the Aptian of Tanzania, and C.I sp. from the Barremian Makatini Fm. of Zululand. Spinicharixa gen. nov. is introduced for Charixa-\ike species with multiple spine bases. Two species are described: S. pitti sp. nov., the type species, probably from the Urgoniana Fm. (?Aptian) of Spain, and S. dimorpha from the M.-U. Albian Gault Clay of Kent. All previous records of L. Cretaceous cheilostomes are reviewed. Although attaining a wide geographical distribution, cheilostomes remained uncommon, morphologically conservative and of low species diversity until late Albian-early Cenomanian times. Introduction An outstanding event in the fossil history of the Bryozoa is the appearance, radiation and dominance achieved by the Cheilostomata during the latter part of the Mesozoic. In this paper we record it for the first time in European waters. The initial discovery was in a marina at Holyhead, North Wales, in July 2010 but S. japonica has since been ob- served abundantly in the Orkney Islands (from May 2011) and, subsequently, at other localities in northern Scotland. In- troduction seems most likely to have been on an ocean-going vessel. The British material is here fully described and illustrated with SEMs and colour photographs; some unusual characters are discussed. -

Milne-Edwards, 1867) é uma espécie de siri nativa do Indo-Pacífico cuja distribuição tem sido ampliada pelo transporte de suas formas larvais em água de lastro e correntes marítimas. No litoral brasileiro, nas áreas em que está presente, C. hellerii pode causar consequências negativas as espécies de portunídeos nativas, sendo considerada uma espécie invasora. Este trabalho apresenta o monitoramento da ocorrência da especie em três praias do litoral de Salvador. Os espécimes descritos neste trabalho foram coletados durante as atividades do projeto de Monitoramento de Praias do Litoral de Salvador, promovido pelo Núcleo Integrado de Estudos em Zoologia (NIEZ) da Universidade Católica do Salvador (UCSal). Os exemplares foram registrados na praia da Ribeira e na praia da Pituba, e ausentes na praia de Itapua. Palavras-chave: Brachyura. Decapoda. Bioinvasão. Monitoramento. 1. Collections were carried out on S. unicornis reefs at two-month intervals from May 2003 to May 2004, in the rocky sublittoral of the southeastern Brazilian coast. Relative abundance and occurrence were used to rank these species in the hierarchy importance. A total of 2,018 individuals were obtained, in 11 families, 22 genera and 31 species. Porcellanidae and Pilumnidae were the most abundant families, comprising respectively almost 60% and 15% of individuals sampled. -

Fax: (34) 981.596904 - e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Data on 12 species of Cheilostomatous Bryozoan collected from the NW of the Iberian Peninsula are included. Five of them are cited for the first time from this area; revision of collection samples confirms the presence of six other species, previously cited under different names. One species (Smittina jordii) is new to science. The record of Escharella praealta extends its geographical and bathymetrical range. Upgrading of Bugula neritina sessilis to species level is proposed, placing it in the genus Dendrobeania. Résumé : Nous regroupons dans le présent travail des observations portant sur douze espèces de Bryozoaires Chilostomes, récoltées au nord-ouest de la Péninsule Ibérique, dont cinq sont citées pour la première fois; la révision d’échantillons de collections confirme la présence de six autres espèces, citées précédemment sous des noms différents. Une nouvelle espèce, Smittina jordii est décrite. La signalisation d’Escharella praealta élargit sa répartition géographique et bathymétrique.
