The aim of this survey is to get the information of the fish diversity around Mesangat watershed, the distribution of each site and the status of the species. The results of this survey could be use as the basic data for REA KON to manage the area for the continuation and conservation of the species.

This area is subjected to intense human activities with many plantations (palm tree, banana, pineapple, coffee, rubber and cocoa). Samples were collected, with gillnets of different mesh sizes, through 6 sampling surveys during dry and rainy seasons from February 2010 to December 2010 at 6 sampling sites. A total of 70 fish species belonging to 48 genera, 28 families and 10 orders were recorded. The temporal variation of diversity index is less marked than spatial variation. The upstream, with 35 species, was less rich in species than the medium area and downstream areas (respectively 46 and 68). The upstream and downstream areas gathered 35 species. Thirty three species were common to the upper and middle areas and 46 species appeared both in the lower courses and the middle area. The 21 species restricted to the lower part of the river are mainly estuarine/marine origin. The beta diversity value revealed low similarity between the lower and upper course of Ehania River. Garra alticorpora and G. nujiangensis also have similar morphological characters to G. imberba, but the taxonomic statuses and phylogenetic relationships of these species with G. imberba remains uncertain. In this study, 128 samples from the Jinshajiang, Red, Nanpanjiang, Lancangjiang, Nujiang Rivers as well as Hainan Island were measured while 1 mitochondrial gene and 1 nuclear intron of 24 samples were sequenced to explore the phylogenetic relationship of these five species. The results showed that G. hainanensis, G. yiliangensis, G. alticorpora and G. imberba are the same species with G. imberba being the valid species name, while G. nujiangensis is a valid species in and of itself. ABSTRACT: Fish exploit the diversities of food organisms and habitats in their aquatic environments according to their structural morphology and feeding habits, hence its ecological roles and functions. Six morphological measurements and dietaries of 582 stomachs of eleven (11) species in the Cross River estuary, Nigeria, were examined from August-December, 2014 to establish interrelationship of diet and morphology. TrophLab® estimated the trophic level (TL) for each species. Dietaries reveal 3 to 11 food items on which basis species were grouped into three functional trophic guilds: omnivore (6 species), detritivore-algivore (2 species) and carnivore (3 species). Positive linear relationship was established between total length (TL) 2 and mouth area (MA) (r = 0.31 - 0.96; p < 0.5; r > 0.5 in Cynoglossus senegalensis and Liza falcipinnis, r2 < 0.5 for other species) except in the cichlid Ethmalosa fimbriata (r = 0.000267; p = 0.9997). Higher relationships were established in mouth area (MA) and mouth dimensions (MV and MH) with trophic levels (TLs) among species within same trophic guild than when non- related species were combined: detritivore (r2 = 1.00), carnivore (r2 = 0.91), omnivore (r2 = 0.4348), and all species combined (r2 = 0.1414).

Data on karyotype of Labeo coubie i s needful for environmental assessment and genetic improvement breeding projects . This study was aimed at determining the k ar yotype of L . coubie. 10 specimens were obtained from th e University of Ilorin dam , Ilorin, Nigeria . Each specimen received intraperitoneally 0.02% colchicine (1ml/100g body weight) and left for 4 hours before sacrificing. Chromosome preparation was made from the kidney and liver . A total of 200 metaphase spreads were scored. The diploid chromosome numbers ranged from 2n = 44 to 2n = 50. T he modal diploid number was found to be 2n = 50 and this represents 56 %. The kidney tissue gave better chromosome pre paration. The s e result s contribut e to the karyotypic data on L. coubie . Fish samples were col- lected between November 2014 and January 2015 eve- ry fortnight for the recording of relevant data (length, weight and stomach content). The result obtained re- veals significantly higher biometric parameters in H. niloticus compared to L. coubie. Many biometric pa- rameters measured correlated significantly with the gut characteristics. The length-weight relationship re- vealed negative allometric growth for both species. However, sampled fishes were in good condition at the time of the study. Food item isolated in both spe- cies revealed an omnivorous feeding habit, hence these fish species may be considered as potential can- didates for aquaculture.
