WEST VIRGINIA Fishing Regulations JANUARY - DECEMBER 2004 West Virginia Division of Natural Resources D I Investment in a Legacy --------------------------- S West Virginia’s anglers enjoy a rich sportfishing legacy and conservation ethic that is maintained T through their commitment to our state’s fishery resources. Recognizing this commitment, the R Division of Natural Resources endeavors to provide a variety of quality fishing opportunities to meet I increasing demands, while also conserving and protecting the state’s valuable aquatic resources. One way that DNR fulfills this part of its mission is through its fish hatchery programs. Many anglers are C aware of the successful trout stocking program and the seven coldwater hatcheries that support this T important fishery in West Virginia. The warmwater hatchery program, although a little less well known, is still very significant to West Virginia anglers. O West Virginia’s warmwater hatchery program has been instrumental in providing fishing opportunities F to anglers for more than 60 years. For most of that time, the Palestine State Fish Hatchery was the state’s primary facility dedicated to the production of warmwater fish. Millions of walleye, muskellunge, channel catfish, hybrid striped bass, saugeye, tiger musky, and largemouth F and smallmouth bass have been raised over the years at Palestine and stocked into streams, rivers, and lakes across the state. I A recent addition to the DNR’s warmwater hatchery program is the Apple Grove State Fish Hatchery in Mason County. Construction of the C hatchery was completed in 2003. It was a joint project of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the DNR as part of a mitigation agreement E for the modernization of the Robert C.

  • Characterizing a Hidden Fishery: Setline Fishing in the New River, Virginia
CHARACTERIZING A HIDDEN FISHERY: SETLINE FISHING IN THE NEW RIVER, VIRGINIA Benjamin D. Dickinson Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science In Fisheries and Wildlife Science Donald J. Orth, Co-Chair Steve L. McMullin, Co-Chair Brian R. Murphy John R. Copeland December 9, 2013 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: catfish, setline, trotline, human dimensions, by-catch Copyright 2013, Benjamin D. Dickinson Characterizing a Hidden Fishery: Setline Fishing in the New River, Virginia Benjamin D. Dickinson ABSTRACT Catfishes Ictaluridae are important food fish that are harvested from the New River, Virginia by multiple methods, yet standard creel survey approaches do not accurately sample setline effort, a popular fishing gear for catfish. I characterized the New River setline fishery by estimating setline effort and catch rates of catfish and by-catch in 2011, and by investigating the attitudes and opinions of setline users during 2012. Setline effort was highest during June-August, and declined significantly by mid-September. Several dedicated setline users accounted for a significant portion of total setline effort. Experimental setlines baited with live minnows Cyprinidae proved to be an effective method for catching catfish but caught few walleye Sander vitreus, smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu, and muskellunge Esox masquinongy. Estimated by-catch of these species by setline fishers is small compared to catch by hook-and-line anglers, though walleye experienced high setline hooking mortality, and catch rates increased in autumn months. Setlines appear to be part of a larger “way of life” for some rural individuals, who may also hunt, trap, and garden as part of activities to supplement their diet or income.

  • MIDDLE WOODLAND FISHING METHODS at the BLUE WATER BRIDGE SOUTH SITE (Afho-7)
MIDDLE WOODLAND FISHING METHODS AT THE BLUE WATER BRIDGE SOUTH SITE (AfHo-7) By Shari L. Prowse MA Abstract This thesis examines the fishing methods used by the pre-contact Native inhabitants of the Blue Water Bridge South site (AfHo-7) through ethnographic and archaeological research, the fish fauna remains and the fishing related artifacts excavated from the site. From these lines of evidence it was determined that spring spawning fish species such as lake sturgeon and walleye were being harvested with the use of harpoons and spears for the former, and fish nets and leisters for the latter. Evidence also strongly suggests the existence of an intensive summer fishery that used nets for the capture of spawning freshwater drum as well as a spring and summer opportunistic fishery that employed fish- hooks and nets. This site was inferred to have followed a spring early-summer macroband settlement pattern with perhaps a minor fall occupation that may have involved fishing for spawning lake whitefish. Based on the overall pattern of settlement and subsistence inferred for the Blue Water Bridge South site and comparisons with other Middle Woodland sites within the central Great Lakes region, it was concluded that the Middle Woodland pattern of settlement and subsistence was highly variable and influenced by both environmental variables and human choice. Chapter 1 Introduction Statement of Goal of Study The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the fishing methods employed by the Native peoples at the Blue Water Bridge South (AfHo-7) site, and by extension, other Middle Woodland peoples. Data will be derived from the fish remains and fishing related artifacts excavated from the Blue Water Bridge South site and will be interpreted in light of information obtained from ethnographic and ethnohistoric sources, archaeological fish research, and fish biology and behaviour.
