I know of nobody else who ever achieved what he did. I enlisted in the Army in 1959 and took basic training at Ft. Riley, KS with the 1st Inf. Div. There I noticed some of the cadre wearing the 3rd Div patch of the right shoulder. When I asked if they knew Audie Murphy from the war, several of them replied they did. In fact, one old sgt. had been Audie's squad leader at one time. It was an honor to be trained by men who had fought alongside Audie Murphy. Name: Edwin Monch Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! The Museum of Modern Art Department of Film 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART THE ARTS FOR TELEVISION an exhibition organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam THE ARTS FOR TELEVISION is the first major museum exhibition to examine television as a form for contemporary art : television as a gallery or theater or alternative space, even television as art . An international selection of artworks made for broadcast, the exhibi- tion documents the crossovers and collaborations that take place on this new television, between and among dancers, musicians, play- wrights, actors, authors, poets, and visual and video artists . And it investigates the artists' own investigation of one medium -- be it dance or music or literature -- through another . It examines the transformations video makes and the possibilities it allows . These provocative uses of television time and technology are organized in THE ARTS FOR TELEVISION according to the medium transformed by the electronic image ; the six categories are Dance for Television, Music for Television, Theatre for Television, Literature for Television, The Video Image (works that address video as a visual art, that make reference to the traditional visual arts and to seeing itself), and Not Necessarily Television (works that address the usual content of TV, and transform it) . The ARTS FOR TELEVISION also presents another level of collaboration in artists' television . It documents the involvement of television stations in Europe and America with art and artists' video . It recognizes their commitment and acknowledges the risks they take in allowing artists the opportunity to realize works of art .

  • Audie Murphy
Audie Murphy Audie Leon Murphy (20 June 1925 – 28 May 1971) was an American soldier, actor, songwriter, and rancher. He was one of Audie Murphy the most decorated American combat soldiers of World War II. He received every military combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism. Murphy received the Medal of Honor for valor that he demonstrated at the age of 19 for single-handedly holding off a company of German soldiers for an hour at the Colmar Pocket in France in January 1945, then leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition. Murphy was born into a large family of sharecroppers in Hunt County, Texas. His father abandoned them, and his mother died when he was a teenager. Murphy left school in fifth grade to pick cotton and find other work to help support his family; his skill with a hunting rifle helped feed his family. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Murphy's older sister helped him to falsify documentation about his birthdate in order to meet the minimum-age requirement for enlisting in the military. Turned down initially for being underweight by the Army, Navy and the Marine Corps, he eventually was able to enlist in the Audie Murphy photographed in 1948 Army. He first saw action in the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily; wearing the U.S. Army khaki "Class A" then in 1944 he participated in the Battle of Anzio, the liberation (tropical service) uniform with full-size of Rome, and the invasion of southern France.

The Kid from Texas: The Movie Heroism of Audie Murphy JOHN H. LENIHAN The title The Kid from Texas may have had little to do with the subject of Universal-International's 1950 film about New Mexico's Billy the Kid, but it was the perfect introduction for Universal's prospective young star from Texas, Audie Murphy. Born in Hunt County, Texas in 1924, Audie Murphy would be the only Western film star in the 1950s and 1960s whose geographic origins (Texas and the Southwest) matched those of the cinematic West. Yet unlike Tom Mix, Buck Jones, and several other Western greats, Murphy's background was anything but that of the ro mantic cowboy. His youth recalled more the world of John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath complete with poverty, sharecropping, and an unstable family life. World War II provided the occasion for his sudden rise from. poverty and obscurity just as the war brought affluence for the nation as a whole.

Vol. 5, No. 4 October, 1999 SMALL WORLD by club member Beatrice Castaneda of Alvin, Texas I had been meaning to ask my uncle if he knew Audie Murphy since July of 1998 when I first heard about Audie on AMC cable. But I put it off thinking there was no way because my uncle served in the Pacific and Audie fought against the Germans. Well, when I got back from the Audie Murphy Days trip to Greenville my sister called. She had asked my uncle, who's name is Able, to sign the stamp petition and he refused. According to my sister he got angry and said “Yes, I knew Audie Murphy. Doggone him, he was always stealing my coats.” He refused to sign the petition. It was hard to believe because my uncle is the kindest man imaginable and would never lie about anything like that. Well, my daughter and I just returned from a trip to my uncle's house and this is the story. He met Audie at a hospital in Topeka KS where he was working as a medic. He was a private. He said it gets very cold in Kansas and, my uncle had several army issue fuzzy coats but the one that he liked most was one that he bought and paid for himself. It was a better quality coat with a band or belt across the chest. He said everybody borrowed that coat from him and Audie was the last one to borrow it and did not return it before he “went off to Washington”.

LAMP POST FILM ACCESSORY NEWS LearnAboutMoviePosters.com November 2015 MOVIE POSTERS FOUND UNDER FLOOR MAY BRING SIX FIGURES AT HERITAGE AUCTIONS Forgotten trove holds five, never-before-seen-posters of Hollywood history; offered at public auction Nov. 21-22 in Dallas DALLAS – A trove of a 17 rare movie posters discovered under a linoleum floor in southern Pennsylvania may be worth more than $140,000 when they cross the block at public auction Nov. 21- 22 in Dallas. The find holds lost pieces of Hollywood history – including five, never-before-seen posters such as Clark Gable’s first starring role and the Style D one sheet for Tarzan The Ape Man, which is expected to sell for more than $40,000 at Heritage Auctions. The stash was discovered last summer by Bob and Dylan Basta while renovating a back room in their father’s newly-purchased home. When Bob and Dylan removed a dated linoleum floor they discovered layers of newspapers from the 1940s and 14 movie posters from obscure films they had never heard of well as the well-known Tarzan. They quickly called their father, Robert, to report the discovery. “When you work on homes like this all your life you always dream of that day when you actually find something rare and it seldom comes,” said Robert Basta. “I‘m excited for my boys, now they have a story and a memory that will last their lifetimes.” Robert said many people would place paper, especially newspapers, under linoleum to help cushion the floor and eliminate wear. But once his sons started researching the movie titles online they quickly learned the posters under the floor were not your average discovery.

  • The Membership Continues to Expand As Does the Burden Upon Me To
January 26, 1999 Vol. 5, No. 1 Dear Club Members, Welcome to the beginning of our fifth year of operation. The membership continues to expand, as does the physical burden upon me to produce this newsletter. Even though a few of you have graciously assisted with typing, there are not enough hours in a day for me to physically work alone. I desperately need a regular staff to help put this effort together. I realize that there are only a handful of members in my immediate geographical area. Unless the situation improves, 1999 may be the club’s final year. This cry for help is amplified by the fact that I have reached a time in life affectionately known as the "Golden Years”. Things just don’t work the same anymore. On September 28, 1998 I had major surgery on my neck and hip for two herniated discs. This was successful. This surgery was needed because of the gift of arthritis. But any major illness or accident to me threatens the club’s continued administration. There must be an operational backup plan where staff members can fill my shoes. I am sixty years old; the club membership grows on a daily basis and I continue to age on a daily basis. Even if I remain healthy from here on and avoid arthritis in my hands and other afflictions of aging, time marches on for me. There remains so much to be written about Audie, it would be a tragic for it to end in the year 1999. Do you want to perpetuate the club? May I please have your comments, suggestions and pledges of support? The club’s private E-mail address is: [email protected] Kindly limit communications to club business.
