Our program is designed for students aged 12 to 16 years with plans to attend secondary school or university in English speaking countries such as Canada or the USA, as well as those who have a strong desire to improve their English while experiencing Canadian life and culture. Some of Our Many Program Features: STRONG AND FOCUSED ACADEMIC NATURE Central to the Appleby Summer ESL Program is its strong and focused academic nature, with 30 hours of classroom instruction per week. Students are placed in one of five levels based on their comprehensive entrance test on the first day of the program. Completion Certificates and Study Reports will be issued to students at the end of the program. SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT Students are cared for by a supportive team of engaged and experienced counselors. Our Residential Life team is comprised of highly skilled, motivated individuals who truly enjoy working with students. Their role is to support students throughout their experience at Appleby and to make every day fun, from the moment they arrive to the day they depart. HIGHLY QUALIFIED INSTRUCTORS Our ESL instructors are carefully selected, highly qualified and experienced professionals who hold university degrees in Education as well as certification in teaching English as a second language. All instructors are certified teachers who are experienced in working with international students of all levels, oftentimes overseas. SMALL CLASS SIZES Appleby College’s Summer ESL Program classes have a maximum of 15 students and an average of 10 per class. This helps maximize each student’s opportunities for learning. FUN AND ENGAGING ACTIVITIES Fun and varied sports and social games are offered daily. Exciting weekend excursions to the best attractions maximize the fun and learning, with on-campus swimming offered at least once a week. It’s about having a lot of fun, making friends from around the world, and about maturing as a person and student. Our in-class instruction is complemented by fun and engaging afternoon and evening activities as well as weekend trips to major attractions in and around Toronto and the Niagara region. All of our activities are designed to encourage students to practice and further develop their English language skills. CN Tower Outdoor Education St. Lawrence Market Building Inukshuks Downtown Toronto Bronte Harbour THE NORTHWARD BOUND CANOE ADVENTURE Designed in the image of Appleby College’s renowned Outdoor Education program, the Northward Bound Canoe Adventure is designed to foster confidence, teamwork and leadership skills in students, all while having fun canoeing and adventuring in the frontier wilderness of northern Ontario. Over the course of the week, students will spend nights in cabins at the base camp and in tents along the portage route. They will learn technical skills associated with wilderness survival and travel such as outdoor cooking, setting up tents, hiking, canoeing, fishing and navigation. In addition to outdoor education counselors and guides, English-speaking teachers also accompany the students to deliver lessons in the outdoor environment. CAMPUS LIFE: ACCOMMODATIONS Appleby Summer ESL students reside in our well-appointed air-conditioned student residence houses on campus, with two students to a room. Each residence house offers common rooms for students, providing a casual and comfortable social space. Males and females are accommodated separately and all rooms are fully furnished with beds and linens, individual study spaces, closets and are Wi-Fi accessible. Self-serve laundry facilities are provided free of charge. With the health and safety of each student as our utmost priority, we provide 24/7 supervision from arrival in Canada to program departure. Our caring and supportive residential counselors live alongside students in the residential houses and attend all activities and excursions. All instructors are certified Ontario teachers recently trained in First Aid and CPR-C, have completed a police check and participate in Appleby’s pre-summer orientation to ensure proper training and preparation. CAMPUS LIFE: MEALS Three nutritious buffet-style meals are served daily. All meals are eaten in our beautiful lakeview dining hall, centrally located on campus. All foods are freshly prepared on-site by Appleby’s excellent year-round catering team. Fruits and snacks are also prepared and provided daily. Most dietary restrictions are easily accommodated; allergies, vegetarian, vegan, halal, etc. Please contact us with your specific requirements. CAMPUS LIFE: FACILITIES From the picturesque lakefront to the various natural and turf sports fields, Appleby College offers the ideal combination of beautiful natural surroundings and contemporary facilities. Summer ESL students have access to all of Appleby’s world class facilities, including state-of-the-art Wi-Fi enabled classrooms, a laptop computer for every student, dance studio, outstanding sports facilities including tennis courts and swimming pool, and a beautiful 60-acre campus with scenic walking trails and beautiful gardens.     A Closer Look at Appleby College PLANT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Appleby College opened in 1911, thanks to the vision and generosity of our Founders Sir Edmund Walker and his son-in-law John Guest. Sir Edmund was a leading Canadian businessman and philanthropist who was passionate about education. Today’s Appleby College was shaped by his commitment to having a school that could make a great impact on society through its students. It was through his philanthropy that the initial 32-acre farm was purchased and the original School House (now Colley House) was built. The school has never stopped evolving. Since the gift of the original farm we have added a chapel, classrooms, boarding houses, and sports facilities. The land area of the campus has expanded through a number of acquisitions and in 1973 we were given land in Temagami. The Appleby College you see today is a testament to the generosity of our Founders, and to the generosity of generations of parents and alumni.     December, 2017 Dear Marvelwood Families, Marvelwood is a member of Round Square, a worldwide network of 168 schools in 40 countries, all of ​ ​ ​ whom share a holistic approach to learning, built around six IDEALS (internationalism, democracy, environmentalism, adventure, leadership and service). Each year, Round Square schools send a team of delegates to an international conference. In 2016, four Marvelwood students- Guy Kennedy ‘18, Zohra Moradi ‘18, Sky Trapella ‘18 and Victoria Sanchez ‘18- attended the 2016 conference at Aiglon College in Switzerland. The theme of the conference, The Journey That Makes Us, highlighted the IDEALS through ​ ​ guest speakers, group discussions, cultural visits, community service and adventure activities. In 2017, two ​ student delegates- Belle Cameron ‘18 and Alex Sanchez ‘19- represented Marvelwood at the conference in South Africa, where the theme was Unite to Ignite the Fire Within. Both conferences were incredible ​ ​ experiences for our delegates, who represented our school with pride, maturity, and curiosity. The 2018 conference is being hosted by three Round Square schools in Canada: Lower Canada College, Appleby College, and Ashbury College. We have been assigned to Ashbury College in Ottawa. The ​ ​ tentative dates for the trip are September 26-October 3. The the all-inclusive cost will be approximately ​ $1,900 per student; some scholarship is available. Interested students will be asked to fill out an application and sit for an interview in January. Students who applied last year need only sit for an interview. Please let me know if you would like your child to apply. Any student who will be age 16-19 in 2018 is eligible.

    National Forum on Inspiring Excellence in Learning This summer, when we bring together CAIS leaders in charge of academics and faculty growth, we will focus on three major areas: innovation in learning, changing cultures, and being an inspirational leader of learning. Two leaders from each school are invited to participate in this National Forum. What is a National Forum? • A forum is not a conference where you come to hear presentations, although there will be some excellent presentations. • A forum means active participation in learning and sharing. • A forum means contributing to the national research project. How does our National Forum work? • Attendees are invited to attend because of their leadership positions. • Everyone is expected to complete pre-reading and participate in Harkness Discussions. • Everyone is expected to share an effective practice in a Speed Innovating Session in one of three areas of focus. • Everyone is expected to actively participate in the Unconference. Who should attend? Academic and Human Resource Leaders in Independent Schools. Leaders who: • Are current in her/his knowledge of best educational practices • Create and effectively communicate a vision for teaching and learning in her/his school for the next 3-5 years • Set annual goals that unify the work of all teachers/departments and align with the vision for the school • Facilitate the development and implementation of curriculum across the school • Ensure the alignment of curriculum across the school within and across disciplines • Establish the standard
