Students Visit Moore-Few Care Center & Medical Lodge On Saturday, February 21, 18 students from Cottey College volunteered their efforts participating in activities with the residents at Moore-Few Care Center and Medical Lodge. Activities ranged from playing games such as BINGO, Skip Bo, Wii Fitness, and Matching, as well as conversing with the residents. Once again, the residents at both facilities expressed their gratitude, and how much they appreciate seeing new faces, as well as how much they enjoy it when Cottey students came to visit. Students interns Chaymaa Bakhalek and Abbey Johnson planned and coordinated the volunteer events, with Renee Hampton and Rev. Erica Sigauke, serving as staff members for the events. Spiritual Life and Diversity Diversity matters at Cottey College and our students are fully involved in various diverse programs of which trips to other faith traditions is one of them. Students from various spiritual and non-spiritual backgrounds explore and grow through learning from each other and from other cultural values and beliefs. To continue empowering and supporting students in their educational gifts, Rev. Erica Sigauke drove a group of students to a Greek Orthodox Church in Kansas on Sunday, February 22, where they attended the morning service. The students got to experience the community’s conservative Christian worship style and had an opportunity to meet with the Father and had some of their questions addressed. Much was learned about the history of the Eastern Orthodox Church, its ancient spiritual beliefs, and how it differs from the Western Churches, both Catholic and Protestant. The students also appreciated some of the Greek architecture, especially the dome shape of the Temple which represented Christ coming down to his people, as well as the beautiful stained glass windows with Greek icons. Last week on February 9, Rev. Siguake took donated clothes and food to the Moss House, our local women’s shelter. We are very grateful to our community for supporting our Nevada women and children in crisis. Rev. Sigauke also held a diversity and Inclusion workshop on Friday, February 20. Activities and games were used as way to educate the community about promoting inclusive behavior and happy, peaceful relationships. Students from different cultural backgrounds, including our local students, were involved in the presentations. Some of them shared their cultural values, food, games, languages, music, religious beliefs, cultural chores, traditional dances, and native attire for special occasions. The whole workshop was very interactive and engaging. It helped to open space for dialoguing and to promote respect and appreciation of our unique differences. Diversity energizes our community and helps us grow from the inside out with love, empathy, and non-judgmental attitudes, and to remember that together we can help make the world a peaceful place to live.
