Spring has sprung. Or more accurately, by the time our March meeting convenes, we will have sprung forward for daylight savings time, meaning that at least one absent minded member will show up for Performance Hour just in time for Big Band Practice.

If you enjoy listening to music as much as you enjoy playing it with the Folk Music Society, I have some suggestions for you on new music. The Punch Brothers resemble a traditional string band -- , , , fiddle and standup bass. Lead by the virtuoso mandolin player, , the Punch Brothers stay true to the traditional string band format, while using their enormous talents to also make music like a jazz quintet or a classical ensemble. Honoring old time music, and at the same time transcending it, the Punch Brothers new release, Phosphorescent Blues, is a real treat for traditionalists and new music fans alike.

You may never tell another banjo joke again if you listen to Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn, the new release from, you guessed it, Bella Fleck and Abigail Washburn. Fleck has been a notorious banjo talent since the late 1970’s, and Washburn is a relatively new talent. Washburn is steeped in Chinese as well as American folk music, and she has a captivating soprano voice. Plus, this banjo-playing duo is a married couple ofstage.

Rhiannon Giddens is best known as lead singer and fiddler for the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Giddens brings her considerable talent to her first solo release, Tomorrow Is My Turn. Giddens is another artist who bows to tradition, and yet she is squarely in the 21st Century. This T. Bone Burnett produced release is sure appear on many music critics Best of 2015 lists.

I can’t confirm that Ben Wendel, a jazz composer and saxophone player, is incorporating our monthly musical themes into his current online project, The Seasons. Wendel is releasing a new composition with a diferent collaborator each month in 2015 on his website www.benwendel.com, titled “January”, “February”, and so on. If Wendel’s song “March” conjures up images of our monthly musical theme, childhood, we’ll have our answer.

Don’t forget to spring your clocks forward, and we’ll see you on time on March 8.
