Or more accurately, by the time our March meeting convenes, we will have sprung forward for daylight savings time, meaning that at least one absent minded member will show up for Performance Hour just in time for Big Band Practice. If you enjoy listening to music as much as you enjoy playing it with the Folk Music Society, I have some suggestions for you on new music. The Punch Brothers resemble a traditional string band -- guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and standup bass. Lead by the virtuoso mandolin player, Chris Thile, the Punch Brothers stay true to the traditional string band format, while using their enormous talents to also make music like a jazz quintet or a classical ensemble.

And while I had listened to "Stealing Second" before, I now turned my full attention to it. To my delight, both Stuart Duncan (fiddle) and Jerry Douglas (dobro) are here to accompany the great mando playing of Chris Thile. As others have commented, his composing skills are as sublime as his playing. This record has variety, beauty and a lot of just plain fun. Plenty of reels, airs and harmonies from some of the best players on the planet! In the midst of a "music theme" that rewards lackluster talent such as Kid Rock and Jonas Brothers, it's truly a blessing to be reminded of the power of sheer mastery.I first heard Chris with Nickel Creek, and though I was impressed, I had no idea that he possessed the incredible musical depth presented here.Building on the foundation laid by Bill Monroe, Sam Bush and the myriad players from the deep and rich bluegrass tradition, Chris takes the mandolin to a whole new level.High points? EVERY CUT IS A HIGH POINT!!! Personal favorites? Bittersweet Reel and Kneel Before Him.A quick recommendation of another mandolin artist you'll want to hear - Sierra Hull. One last thing...

Primary support was provided by the EU projects FP6-507142 SIMAC http://www.semanticaudio.org. iii iv Abstract The complexity of music is one of the less intensively researched areas in music information retrieval so far. Although very interesting findings have been reported over the years, there is a lack of a unified approach to the matter. Relevant publications mostly concentrate on single aspects only and are scattered across different disciplines. Especially an automated estimation based on the audio material itself has hardly been addressed in the past. However, it is not only an interesting and challenging topic, it also allows for very practical applications. The motivation for the presented research lies in the enhancement of human interaction with digital music collections. As we will discuss, there is a variety of tasks to be considered, such as collection visualization, play-list generation, or the automatic recommendation of music. While this thesis doesn’t deal with any of these problems in deep detail it aims to provide a useful contribution to their solution in form of a set of music complexity descriptors.

Created with families in mind, the personal project encompasses songs Sara embraced as a child herself and brings storytelling, solace, and encouragement to the listener, no matter the age. In addition to two stunning original songs, the album includes Sara’s renditions of “Pure Imagination” from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, The Beatles’ “Good Night,” “Moon River” (originally sung by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s), and more. Under the Pepper Tree also reunites Sara’s Nickel Creek bandmates Chris Thile and her brother Sean on “Blue Shadows on the Trail” (from the 1986 comedy The Three Amigos), Sara’s I’m With Her bandmates Sarah Jarosz & Aoife O’Donovan on “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” (originally performed by Roy Rogers & Sons of the Pioneers), Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes on Harry Nilsson’s “Blanket for a Sail,” David Garza on Roy Orbison’s “Beautiful Dreamer,” and Sara’s now three-year old daughter on her immensely sweet rendition of The Sound of Music’s “Edelweiss.” Sara admits that she initially felt conflicted about making a children’s record until she realized that perhaps this album could impact a young listener in the same manner as the music from her own childhood affected her.

  • Wednesday, November 4 the Englert Theatre Hancher University of Iowa 2 CHRIS THILE
“…the most remarkable mandolinist in the world.” —Independent (London) Chris Thile Wednesday, November 4 The Englert Theatre Hancher University of Iowa 2 CHRIS THILE Multiple Grammy Award-winner and MacArthur Fellow Chris Thile, a member of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer, and vocalist. With his broad outlook that encompasses classical, rock, jazz, and bluegrass, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. As a soloist, Thile has released five albums including his most recent released in 2013, Bach: Partitas and Sonatas, Vol.1, which was produced by renowned bassist Edgar Meyer. In February 2013, Thile won a Grammy for his work on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Stuart Duncan. Then, in September 2014, Thile and Meyer released their latest album collaboration, Bass + Mandolin, which won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. Punch Brothers released their latest album, The Phosphorescent Blues, in January 2015. On this new program, Thile performs solo violin works by J.S. Bach on the mandolin, as well as his own compositions and contemporary music. Selections will be announced from the stage. 3 Las Cafeteras Meets Iowa at the Corner of Art and Activism Las Cafeteras participated in a range of activities during their weeklong residency with Hancher, which focused on celebrating diversity, building and strengthening communities, and sharing the Latino cultural traditions of Son Jarocho. In advance of their September 25th Club Hancher performance, the group visited with third and fourth graders at Lucas Elementary, English Language Learners at City High School, and theatre, arts management, history, and rhetoric students at the University of Iowa.

“A Prairie Home Companion”: First Broadcast (July 6, 1974) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Chuck Howell (guest post)* Garrison Keillor “Well, it's been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon, Minnesota, my hometown, out on the edge of the prairie.” On July 6, 1974, before a crowd of maybe a dozen people (certainly less than 20), a live radio variety program went on the air from the campus of Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. It was called “A Prairie Home Companion,” a name which at once evoked a sense of place and a time now past--recalling the “Little House on the Prairie” books, the once popular magazine “The Ladies Home Companion” or “The Prairie Farmer,” the oldest agricultural publication in America (founded 1841). The “Prairie Farmer” later bought WLS radio in Chicago from Sears, Roebuck & Co. and gave its name to the powerful clear channel station, which blanketed the middle third of the country from 1928 until its sale in 1959. The creator and host of the program, Garrison Keillor, later confided that he had no nostalgic intent, but took the name from “The Prairie Home Cemetery” in Moorhead, MN. His explanation is both self-effacing and humorous, much like the program he went on to host, with some sabbaticals and detours, for the next 42 years. Origins Gary Edward “Garrison” Keillor was born in Anoka, MN on August 7, 1942 and raised in nearby Brooklyn Park. His family were not (contrary to popular opinion) Lutherans, instead belonging to a strict fundamentalist religious sect known as the Plymouth Brethren.
