Dante got his start working for Roger Corman, and an appreciation for unpretentious, low-budget ingenuity runs throughout his films. The series kicks off with the essential box-office sensation Gremlins (1984—Aug 5, 8 & 20), with Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. Billy (Galligan) finds out the hard way what happens when you feed a Mogwai after midnight and mini terrors take over his all-American town. Continuing the necessary viewing is the “uninhibited and uproarious monster bash,” (Michael Sragow, New Yorker) Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990—Aug 6 & 20). Dante’s sequel to his commercial hit plays like a spoof of the original, with occasional bursts of horror and celebrity cameos. In The Howling (1981), a news anchor finds herself the target of a shape-shifting serial killer in Dante’s take on the werewolf genre. -

This trajectory finds its seminal outlining in Caughie (1981a), being variously replicated in, for example, Lapsley and Westlake (1988: 105–28), Stoddart (1995), Crofts (1998), Gerstner (2003), Staiger (2003) and Wexman (2003). 2. Compare the oft-quoted words of Sarris: ‘The art of the cinema … is not so much what as how …. Auteur criticism is a reaction against sociological criticism that enthroned the what against the how …. The whole point of a meaningful style is that it unifies the what and the how into a personal state- ment’ (1968: 36). 3. For a fuller discussion of the conception of film authorship here described, see Grist (2000: 1–9). 4. While for this book New Hollywood Cinema properly refers only to this phase of filmmaking, the term has been used by some to designate ‘either something diametrically opposed to’ such filmmaking, ‘or some- thing inclusive of but much larger than it’ (Smith, M. 1998: 11). For the most influential alternative position regarding what he calls ‘the New Hollywood’, see Schatz (1993). FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE ANNOUNCES PUBLICATION OF ‘REVERSE SHOT’ BOOK ON MARTIN SCORSESE, AND JANUARY SCREENINGS, IN CONJUNCTION WITH SCORSESE EXHIBITION Martin Scorsese: He Is Cinema, a Reverse Shot/Museum of the Moving Image monograph with essays on every major Scorsese film, is celebrated with January 29 book signing January 15–April 23, 2017 Astoria, New York, January 11, 2017—In conjunction with Martin Scorsese, a major exhibition devoted to the director’s life, work, and love of cinema, currently on view in its galleries through April 23, and a comprehensive retrospective featuring all of Scorsese’s films, Museum of the Moving Image has published a book in partnership with its online publication, Reverse Shot. Martin Scorsese: He Is Cinema (2017), featuring essays on every Scorsese film by regular contributors to the magazine, was edited by Michael Koresky and Jeff Reichert, co-founders and co-editors of Reverse Shot. To celebrate its publication, the Museum will host a book signing on Sunday, January 29, after a screening of Raging Bull. The book is available exclusively in the Museum shop ($20). Most of the essays were originally published in earlier versions on Reverse Shot for a symposium on Martin Scorsese (available online), but new essays have been commissioned for the book, which also features a foreward by Chief Curator David Schwartz and an introduction by Koresky and Reichert. When the Latino Family Goes Hollywood
WHEN THE LATINO FAMILY GOES HOLLYWOOD Jaume Martí-Olivella Allegheny College Prepared for delivery at the 1997 meeting of the Latin American Studies Association, Continental Plaza Hotel, Guadalajara, Mexico, April 17-19, 1997. I. Introduction: Towards a historical and theoretical background I would like to start this paper paraphrasing my own title in the form of a question: Should the Latino Family go Hollywood? Or, from another angle, why is Hollywood interested in the Latino Family? Or even a more urgent question, should historical Latinos still have to rely on the "family metaphor" in order to achieve (mainstream) representation? The response to the second question is arguably the clearest one. The Chicano film critic and scholar Chon A. Noriega provides us with an answer that at the same time restates the question: Between 1987 and 1988, Hollywood released four Chicano-Latino feature films: La Bamba (1987), Born in East L.A. (1987), The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), and Stand and Deliver (1988). The success of these films, and La Bamba in particular, led studio executives and others to predict a "Hispanic Hollywood." The proof of that claim, however, was attributed to "Hispanic" demographics and market studies on "Hispanic" movie attendance, and not to the two-decade Chicano film movement. (147). Hollywood, therefore, had perceived a new market. There was no genuine concern regarding the emergent Chicano culture and its efforts to achieve a filmic representation. My paper will posit the same question almost a decade later. In 1992, three Latino films reached the mainstream: Like Water for Chocolate, El Mariachi and The Mambo Kings. -
