Justify | Sarah Andrew Justify was the definition of perfection during his brief, but brilliant career. There was no question he would win the Eclipse for top sophomore male and, while there was some debate in the Horse of the Year category with GI Breeders= Cup Classic winner (), the mighty Justify won out there too after a history-making campaign. He is the 15th 3-year-old to be named Horse of the Year and the first since 2015 Triple Crown hero . The prestigious list of past sophomore Horses of the Year includes Triple Crown winners , and , as well as more recent runners, such as , and . Much-hyped leading up to his career bow at Santa Anita Feb. 18, the hulking chestnut lived up to the buzz with an ultra- impressive 9 1/2-length graduation. Equally dominant when clearing his first-level allowance condition by 6 1/2 lengths going a mile at Santa Anita Mar. 11, he stamped his ticket to Churchill Downs with a decisive defeat of Bolt d=Oro (Medaglia d=Oro) in the GI Santa Anita Derby Apr. 7. Justify sauntered home a never-in-doubt winner over juvenile champion Good Magic (Curlin) in the GI May 5-- breaking the longstanding Apollo=s curse--and emerged from the fog a half-length clear of the hard-knocking Bravazo () in a nail-biting renewal of the GI Preakness S. Developing some filling in his ankle in late July that would preclude him from a fall campaign, Justify=s connections deemed it best to retire the valuable colt and he has taken up stud duties alongside 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah at Coolmore=s Ashford Stud.

Accelerate left no doubt who the best older horse in the country was by capping a historic season with a popular tally in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic at Churchill Downs, his fifth win at the highest level in 2018. The Hronis Racing colorbearer, a well-documented first Breeders= Cup winner for the John Sadler barn, became just the third horse to sweep all three of Southern California's major handicap events for older horses in the same year--the GI Santa Anita H., GI Gold Cup at Santa Anita S. and GI TVG Pacific Classic --joining (2006) and (2013). Accelerate=s season also included wins in the GI Awesome Again S. and GII San Pasqual S. His only loss of the year was a narrow second-place finish behind eventual GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile winner (Quality Road) in the GII Oaklawn H. in April. Lava Man=s 2006 season also included a win in the GII Goodwood Breeders= Cup H., the previous namesake of the Awesome Again. Lava Man, however, could only manage a seventh-place finish in that term=s Breeders= Cup Classic.

Early Impressions... AOf course, I don't live here [in Kentucky] and he lived here. So I probably saw him four or five times before he sold. I always remembered he was a very nice colt, very easy to get along with. You could pet him without him biting or kicking you. He was always friendly. We were really happy with what we got. He had two brothers who were stakes winners and graded stakes placed. So we expected to get a good number, but that was really good. ASince he started running, he's just gotten better and better and better. I was at Del Mar, the only time I actually watched him live, when he broke his maiden by 8 3/4 lengths, I was there that day. Unique Bella secured an Eclipse award last year as champion female sprinter with a victory in the GI La Brea S. just five days before the close of her sophomore year. This term, the >TDN Rising Star= ended her 4-year-old season--and career--early, retiring in mid-August after fracturing a sesamoid during a workout, but she did enough in her four 2018 starts to secure another Eclipse as top older female. Kicking off this term with a nine-length domination in the GII Santa Maria S. Feb. 10 at Santa Anita, the gray checked in second as the heavy favorite after a disastrous start in Oaklawn=s GI Apple Blossom H. Apr. 13. A decisive victress of the GI Beholder Mile back in Arcadia June 2, Unique Bella closed out her outstanding career with a half-length success in Del Mar=s GI Clement L. Hirsch S. July 29.
