A: 我的父親是法官、 律師, 現在已經退休, 母親是學校教師。 事實上, 我的家人給我很多壓力, 要我成為工程師, 因為數學家經濟上能有多少收入並不明確, 所以我們有個協定, 我必須通 過在 Pisa 的高等師範學校 (Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa) 的入學考試, 考上了才 可以念數學成為數學家, 考不上就去念工程, 結果我考上了。 劉豐哲 (以下簡稱 「豐」): 你的父母都不是從事數學工作的, 為什麼你會選擇數學呢? A: 可能是小時候的一些經驗, 大概6、7歲的時候, 我的祖父雖然受的教育不多, 只受過5年的小 學教育, 但他熱愛閱讀、下棋、 玩各種牌, 也許就是因為他帶我玩牌、下棋, 因此開啟了我的 興趣也說不定, 很難說真正源自那裡。 我一直, 嗯, 大概12、3歲的時候, 我在校的數學很好, 而且我對數學抱著極大的興趣想多知道些。 一直以來或多或少都有這樣的動力在驅策我。 劉: 你父親曾希望你念工程, 他現在是不是為你感到高興? A: 是的, 我一考進高等師範學校, 他就不再質疑我的選擇了。 豐: 是這樣, 你是屬於一個了不起的學派; 義大利的變分學學派, 你是否因此而選擇攻讀與變分 學有關的科目?
