Signed:_________________________________________________________ Date:______5th June 2018 ________________________________________ Dave Hook BA PGCert FHEA Edinburgh i Abstract The published works that form the basis of this PhD are a selection of hip-hop songs written over a period of six years between 2010 and 2015. The lyrics for these pieces are all written by the author and performed with hip-hop group Stanley Odd. The songs have been recorded and commercially released by a number of independent record labels (Circular Records, Handsome Tramp Records and A Modern Way Recordings) with worldwide digital distribution licensed to Fine Tunes, and physical sales through Proper Music Distribution. Considering the poetics of Scottish hip-hop, the accompanying critical reflection is an autoethnographic study, focused on rap lyricism, identity and performance. The significance of the writing lies in how the pieces collectively explore notions of identity, ‘outsiderdom’, politics and society in a Scottish context. Further to this, the pieces are noteworthy in their interpretation of US hip-hop frameworks and structures, adapted and reworked through Scottish culture, dialect and perspective. -

A week-long season of programmes will celebrate the street culture which has grown and developed in Scotland since the 80s, with its own spectrum of emerging and established stars but is largely unheralded by mainstream media. The programming on the new BBC Scotland channel will run from Sunday June 16 to Friday June 21. A cornerstone of this new season will be a major new documentary, Loki’s History of Scottish Hip Hop. Award winning author Darren 'Loki’ McGarvey reveals the History of Scottish hip hop and how over the last 30 or so years it has spawned a revolutionary street-level culture in cities and towns across the country. -

Kurzfassung In der vorliegenden Masterarbeit wurden die Melodie-Hooklines von Popsongs, die in Deutsch- land zwischen 1978 und 2019 sehr erfolgreich waren, explorativ analysiert. Ziel war, zu unter- suchen, ob gewisse Muster in den Reihenfolgen der Töne und Tonlängen vorkommen, und diese zu finden. Für die Mustersuche wurden Markov-Ketten erster, zweiter und dritter Ord- nung sowie Chi-Quadrat-Anpassungstests berechnet. -

Andreas Paepcke Approved for the University Committee on Graduate Studies: iii iv Abstract Current libraries use an assortment of uncoordinated and unreliable techniques for storing and managing their digital information. Digital information can be lost for a variety of reasons: magnetic decay, format and device obsolescence, human or system error, among many others. In this thesis, we address the problem of how to build archival repositories (AR). An AR has the following combined key requirements that distinguish it from other repositories. First, digital objects (e.g., documents, tech- nical reports, movies) must be preserved indefinitely, as technologies, file formats, and organizations evolve. Second, ARs will be formed by a confederation of inde- pendent organizations. -

This band fit right in alongside such names though and don’t be surprised if you see this band blazing a trail similar to that of Midland in recent years. -
CIPHER: Hip Hop Interpellation
Rollefson Part B1 CIPHER ERC Consolidator Grant 2018 Research Proposal [Part B1] Principal Investigator: J. Griffith Rollefson Host Institution: University College Cork Proposed Duration: 60 Months CIPHER: Hip Hop Interpellation Le Conseil International pour Hip Hop et Recherche The International Council for Hip Hop Studies ABSTRACT: CIPHER will launch the global research initiative, Hip Hop Interpellation, pilot a new semantic digital/ethnographic web methodology, and codify the emergent discipline of global hip hop studies. It addresses the central question: why has this highly localized and authenticizing African American music translated so easily to far-flung communities and contexts around the globe? Through this specific question the project attempts to understand the foundational and broadly transferable question: how are globalization and localization related? To answer these questions CIPHER posits the Hip Hop Interpellation thesis, that hip hop spreads not as a copy of an African American original, but, through its performance of knowledge, emerges as an always already constituent part of local knowledge and practice. The theorization thus moves beyond the “hailing practices” described by Althuss er’s theory of interpellation—the discursive webs that coerce ideological incorporation—to describing an interpolation that locates other histories within and through hip hop’s performed knowledges. CIPHER’s semantic web methodology tests this thesis, tracking how hip hop memes—slogans, anthems, and icons—are simultaneously produced by people and produce people. This research clears the conceptual impasse of structural “cultural imperialism” vs. agentic “cultural appropriation” debates and instrumentalizes the methodological distance between ethnographic specificity and big data generality. It does so by creating a feedback loop between digital humanities methods (crowd sourcing, semantic tagging, computational stylometry) and ethnographic fieldwork techniques (interviews, musical analysis, participant observation). -

Native Americans were the earliest inhabitants of the United States and played its first music. Beginning in the 17th century, immigrants from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Germany and France began arriving in large numbers, bringing with them new styles and instruments. African slaves brought musical traditions, and each subsequent wave of immigrants contributed to a melting pot. Much of modern popular music can trace its roots to the emergence in the late 19th century of African American blues and the growth of gospel music in the 1920s. The African American basis for popular music used elements derived from European and indigenous musics.
