In particular, we shall discuss how the notion of continuity and the connected notion of continua and boundaries developed through the ages until Brentano’s revival of the original Aristotelian account against the by then established mathematical ortodoxy. Thus, this monograph hopes to fill in a gap in the present state of Brentanian scholarship as well as to present a thorough account of this specific historical thread. They were always there to help me with whatever I needed in this journey. ii Introduction Imagine we have a light that shines with a blue colour. At one point, though, say at noon today, this colour immediately changes and the light starts to shine a red light. Then, one could ask: what is the last instant in which the light’s colour was blue? And, analogously, one could also ask: what is the first instant that the light started to shine red? An obvious answer to both questions seems to be precisely noon. However, if we take a closer look at these answers, we will realize, first that they cannot be both true together, if we assume that there is only one instant happening at noon; for if this instant is both the last instant in which the light was blue and the first instant that the light was red, we will necessarily have to say that the light was both fully blue and fully red at this instant, which seems to be a contradiction. Maybe, then, one might reply, we should say that noon is the first instant the light was red and we can take an instant that is one millisecond before noon and claim that that instant is the last instant in which the light was blue. A first obvious objection to this, however, would be: but what in the world allows one to pick the later colour as the one actually present at noon and not the earlier one? Indeed, this attempted solution is guilty of some apparent inherent air of arbitrariness; one cannot present a principled reason to choose red instead of blue as the colour of the light at noon. However, there is a further problem hiding in this simple alleged solution. A natural assumption about time is that between any two instants there is at least another instant. Now, if this is true, then, looking back at our example, we must conclude that there is at least another instant between that last instant in which the light was blue and noon; and, hence, we can ask: what was the colour of the light in that instant. If we answer “blue”, then we would contradict the claim that the instant one millisecond before noon was the last instant in which the light was blue; and, if we answer “red”, then we would contradict the claim that the instant at noon was indeed the first instant in which the light was red. Thus, we must conclude that in this particular instant between noon and a millisecond before noon, the light was neither blue not red. But we assumed that the change was 1 immediate, that is, that no instant passed between the light being blue and then red. We definitely seem to have sunk deeply into a murky logical swamp. Indeed, this kind of problems have a very old history, dating back at least to Ancient Greece, but they are nonetheless also relevant today, with discussions as to how to solve them coming from all directions of research. In particular, we can mention the 20th century attempts, pioneered by Whitehead, de Laguna, Broad and other authors, at constructing a “point-free” version of topology. However, the main point to keep in mind here is that all these discussions have as common ground the discussion of the topological notion of continuity. This notion is, however, not an intrinsically clear one. In fact, different circumstances call for slightly different ideas regarding how to cash out this notion of continuity. Nowadays, in mathemat- ics, the most common usage of this notion of continuity is perhaps in connection to functions. In this sense, a function — more specifically, let us think here of a simple function from real numbers to real numbers — is said to be continuous if one can draw its graph without taking the pen off the paper, i.e., if the line that we recognize as its graph does not contain any “jumps”. The usual formal characterization of this property is the classical -δ property, which shall be studied in a little more depth further on in this dissertation, but which can be intuitively described here as the property according to which a “small” change of the argument of the function only produces a “small” change in its value at this argument — or, in other words, a change to a “nearby” argument point moves the value of the function also to a “nearby” value. We can see in this sense how this notion is also connected to the notion of “closeness”. Nonetheless, this transition into a rigorous definition does away with the original intuition of gaplessness in the sense that we are now always considering a “close” argument point, but one that is indeed some distance away from the original point and that cannot be considered the “next” point following the original argument in the sense that there is a whole interval of points strictly between the two points we are considering. The main goal of this dissertation, thus, is to unravel a specific thread in the history of math- ematics. More specifically, we shall discuss the particular development of this notion of continuity, that started in Ancient Greece and eventually evolved into a key notion of the modern mathematical theory of point-set topology. However, we shall look at this historical thread from the perspective of Brentano’s ideas con- cerning these matters as they were presented in his late texts from the first decades of the 20th 2 century. In doing so, our goal is to fill out a gap in Brentano’s scholarship, as well as to offer a fairly self-contained presentation of this particular historical thread — giving special emphasis on details that share connections with Brentano’s ideas on the matter. It is not only my personal opinion that problems — and, ultimately, their solutions — are much better understood in historical context, but also, Brentano himself was a fairly historically oriented thinker and, although he presented many radically new ideas, he always relied on the historical tradition of every problem he dealt with. Thus, the first chapter of the dissertation deals with the beginning of the history of this concept of continuity, as it was presented by Aristotle and further developed both by later Ancient and by Medieval thinkers. Special attention will be given to a particular interpretation of these topics by a specific Medieval tradition that became known to contemporary writers as quasi-Aristotelianism. This is done since this tradition contains ideas that are very much in tune with the later Brentanian account of the subject, so that the study of this earlier tradition shall provide us not only with the necessary historical underpinning of Brentano’s position, but also with an early presentation of the logical structure of the problems of the Aristotelian position, and of the structure of a solution that will eventually turn out to be analogous to the later Brentanian solution.

One of the contradictions was reported by B. Russel: \Let w be the class [set]1 of all classes which are not members of themselves. An infinitesimal is a number whose magnitude ex- ceeds zero but somehow fails to exceed any finite, positive num- ber. Although logically problematic, infinitesimals are extremely appealing for investigating continuous phenomena. They were used extensively by mathematicians until the late 19th century, at which point they were purged because they lacked a rigorous founda- tion. In 1960, the logician Abraham Robinson revived them by constructing a number system, the hyperreals, which contains in- finitesimals and infinitely large quantities. This thesis introduces Nonstandard Analysis (NSA), the set of techniques which Robinson invented. It contains a rigorous de- velopment of the hyperreals and shows how they can be used to prove the fundamental theorems of real analysis in a direct, natural way. (Incredibly, a great deal of the presentation echoes the work of Leibniz, which was performed in the 17th century.) NSA has also extended mathematics in directions which exceed the scope of this thesis. These investigations may eventually result in fruitful discoveries.     THE HYPERREALS LARRY SUSANKA Abstract. In this article we define the hyperreal numbers, an ordered field containing the real numbers as well as infinitesimal numbers. These infinites- imals have magnitude smaller than that of any nonzero real number and have intuitively appealing properties, harkening back to the thoughts of the inven- tors of analysis. We use the ultrafilter construction of the hyperreal numbers which employs common properties of sets, rather than the original approach (see A. Robinson Non-Standard Analysis [5]) which used model theory. A few of the properties of the hyperreals are explored and proofs of some results from real topology and calculus are created using hyperreal arithmetic in place of the standard limit techniques.     ARITHMETICAL SACKS FORCING ROD DOWNEY AND LIANG YU Abstract. We answer a question of Jockusch by constructing a hyperimmune- free minimal degree below a 1-generic one. To do this we introduce a new forcing notion called arithmetical Sacks forcing. Some other applications are presented. 1. introduction Two fundamental construction techniques in set theory and computability theory are forcing with finite strings as conditions resulting in various forms of Cohen genericity, and forcing with perfect trees, resulting in various forms of minimality. Whilst these constructions are clearly incompatible, this paper was motivated by the general question of “How can minimality and (Cohen) genericity interact?”. Jockusch [5] showed that for n ≥ 2, no n-generic degree can bound a minimal degree, and Haught [4] extended earlier work of Chong and Jockusch to show that that every nonzero Turing degree below a 1-generic degree below 00 was itself 1- generic. Thus, it seemed that these forcing notions were so incompatible that perhaps no minimal degree could even be comparable with a 1-generic one. However, this conjecture was shown to fail independently by Chong and Downey [1] and by Kumabe [7]. In each of those papers, a minimal degree below m < 00 and a 1-generic a < 000 are constructed with m < a. The specific question motivating the present paper is one of Jockusch who asked whether a hyperimmune-free (minimal) degree could be below a 1-generic one. The point here is that the construction of a hyperimmune-free degree by and large directly uses forcing with perfect trees, and is a much more “pure” form of Spector- Sacks forcing [10] and [9].

These equations were recently studied by the authors (\On equations over sets of integers", STACS 2010 ), and it was shown that their unique solutions represent exactly the hyperarithmetical sets. In this paper it is demonstrated that greatest 1 solutions of such equations represent exactly the Σ1 sets in the analytical hierarchy, and these sets can already be represented by systems in the resolved form Xi = 'i(X1;:::;Xn). Least solutions of such resolved systems represent exactly the recursively enumerable sets. 1 Introduction Consider equations '(X1;:::;Xn) = (X1;:::;Xn), in which the unknowns Xi are sets of integers, and the expressions '; may contain addition S + T = fm + n j m 2 S; n 2 T g, Boolean operations and ultimately periodic constants. The course was concerned with descriptive hierarchies, specifically the arithmetical, analytic, and fixpoint hierarchies. The main aim was to go through the proof of the modal mu-calculus alternation hierarchy; on the way, a quick survey of the basics of effective descriptive set theory is given, together with a few of the more amusing set-theoretic facts. – JCB 1 Introduction Let us recall some basic facts about computable functions on the natural numbers, which were covered in earlier courses. We know that a (possibly partial) function is computable by a Turing machine iff it can be defined by means of a small set of operators, including in particular primitive recursion and minimalization. Accordingly we call a set of numbers ‘recursive’ if its characteristic function is computable. We know that there exist non-recursive sets and functions; indeed, we know that there are sets that are not even semi-recursive. (Recall that a set is semi-recursive if there is a program which confirms membership, even if it doesn’t necessarily terminate on a non-member. Equivalently, we can list all the members of the set; hence the equivalent term ‘recursively enumerable’, or r.e.) Given this, we might reasonably ask, what can we say about these ‘hard’ non-r.e. sets? How complicated can they be? And what is the right notion of complicated, anyway? One approach to answering these questions is to keep our focus on the notation of compu- tation, and start asking questions such as: if somebody gives me some non-recursive set as an oracle, what other sets can I then compute, using a standard Turing machine together with the oracle? If I then take a set I can’t even compute with my oracle, and then add that as an oracle, what happens? How far can I go on? Can I order sets in terms of the strength of the oracles needed to compute them? And so on.

    NONSTANDARD ARITHMETIC AND REVERSE MATHEMATICS H. JEROME KEISLER Abstract. We show that each of the five basic theories of second order arithmetic that play a central role in reverse mathematics has a natural counterpart in the language of nonstandard arithmetic. In the earlier paper [HKK1984] we introduced saturation principles in nonstandard arithmetic which are equivalent in strength to strong choice axioms in second order arithmetic. This paper studies principles which are equivalent in strength to weaker theories in second order arithmetic. 1. Introduction. Reverse mathematics was introduced by H. Fried- manx and is developed extensively in the book of Simpson [Si1999]. It shows that many results in classical mathematics are equivalent to one of five basic theories in the language L2 of second order arithmetic. These theories, from weakest to strongest, are called Recursive Comprehen- sion (RCA0), Weak Koenig Lemma (WKL0), Arithmetical Comprehension 1 (ACA0), Arithmetical Transfinite Recursion (ATR0), and Π1 Comprehen- 1 sion (Π1-CA0). In this paper we find natural counterparts to each of these theories in the language ∗L1 of nonstandard arithmetic. The language L2 of second order arithmetic has a sort for the natural numbers and a sort for sets of natural numbers, while the language ∗L1 of nonstandard arithmetic has a sort for the natural numbers and a sort for the hyperintegers.
