In this area, the Stream is like a river 40 miles wi~e, 2,000 feet deep, flowin~ at a velocity of five miles an hour, and discharging 100 billion tons of water per hour. From the Straits of Florida, it takes a very narrow course up the North American coast to Newfoundland and then veers toward Europe (Fig. 1). Within the Straits, the lateral boundaries of the Gulf Stream are fairly well fixed, but when it flows into the open sea its boundaries become indefinite. Northeast of Cape Hatteras, the Stream often forms great looping meanders which change position with time. The major axis of the Stream within the Straits of Florida is known to mi~rate laterally; that is, it moves closer to or farther from the coast. As with most large natural phenomena, the Gulf Stream has given rise to a number of amazing legends--the products of much imagination and only a little knowledge. Early ideas were restricted by the very crude description of the Stream then available and, more importantly, by the fact that there was no well-developed knowledge of t'his physical characteristics--the velocity, volume, position, andvariation of flow. -

Energy and material are continually exchanged at the interfaces between water and air, ice, rocks, and sediments. In addition to the physical and chemical processes, biological processes play a significant role. Vast areas of the ocean remain unexplored. Investigation of the surface ocean is carried out by satellites. All other observations and measurements have to be carried out in-situ using research vessels and spe- cial instruments. Ocean observation requires the use of special technologies such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), towed camera systems etc. Seismic methods provide the foundation for mapping the bottom topography and sedimentary structures. Our objective is to investigate the effect of the ocean currents on the retrieved SAR ocean surface wind fields. The results show that, compared to SAR wind fields that are retrieved without taking into account the ocean currents, the accuracy of the winds obtained when ocean currents are taken into account is increased by 0.2–0.3 m/s; the accuracy of the wind direction is improved by 3–4◦. Based on these results, a semi-empirical formula for the errors in the winds and the ocean currents is derived. -

Lesson Six: Surface Ocean Currents Which factors in the earth system create gyres? Why does pollution collect in the gyres? Objective: Develop a model that shows how patterns in atmospheric and ocean currents create gyres, and explain why plastic pollution collects in them. Introduction: Gyres are circular, wind-driven ocean currents. Look at this map of the five main subtropical gyres, where the colors illustrate enormous areas of floating waste. These are places in the ocean that accumulate floating debris—in particular, plastic pollution. How do you think ocean gyres form? What patterns do you notice in terms of where the gyres are located in the ocean? The Earth is a system: a group of parts (or components) that all work together. The components of a system have different structures and functions, but if you take a component away, the system is affected. The system of the Earth is made up of four main subsystems: hydrosphere (water), atmosphere (air), geosphere (land), and biosphere (organisms). The ocean is part of our planet’s hydrosphere, but it is also its own system. Which components of the Earth system do you think create gyres, and why would pollution collect in them? Activity 1 Gyre Model: How do you think patterns in ocean currents create gyres and cause pollution to collect in the gyres? Use labels and arrows to answer this question. Biogeosciences Discuss., 8, 5827–5848, 2011 General Comment This article reports experimental estimates of community metabolism assessed at 8 stations in the eastern south Pacific conducted during the Humboldt-2009 cruise on board RV Hesperides from 5 to 15 March 2009. An experimental evaluation of the ef- fect of UVB radiation on community metabolism is conducted. From few experiments the authors claim that UVB radiation suppressed net community production, result- ing in a dominance of heterotrophic communities in surface waters, compared to the C2596 prevalence of autotrophic communities inferred when materials, excluding UVB radia- tion, are used for incubation. They also claim that their results show that UVB radiation, which has increased greatly in the study area, may have suppressed net community production of the plankton communities, possibly driving plankton communities in the Southwest Pacific towards CO2 sources. The evidence provided in the manuscript is not sufficient to support the conclusions. The sampling is clearly too limited, both spatially and temporally, to extrapolate their results to the Humboldt Current System. -

The Benjamin Franklin and Timothy Folger Charts of the Gulf Stream Philip L Richardson Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Woods Hole, MA 02543 [email protected] [email protected] 1 Introduction In September 1978 I found two prints of the first Franklin-Folger chart of the Gulf Stream in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Although this chart had been mentioned by Franklin in 1786, all copies of it had been “lost”1 for many years. The Franklin-Folger chart was not only excellent for its time,2 but it remains today a good summary of the general characteristics of the Gulf Stream. Because of its historical role in our understanding of the Stream and in the development of oceanography, I would like to discuss its depiction of the Gulf Stream relative to later charts and recent measurements. There are three versions of the Franklin-Folger chart; the first was printed in 1769 by Mount and Page in London, the second was printed circa 1780- 1783 by Le Rouge in Paris, and a third was published in 1786 by Franklin in Philadelphia. The last is the most widely known and reproduced of the three. However, its projection is different from the first two, and the Gulf Stream has been modified. Since no copies of the first version had been located, some historians had doubted it had ever been printed (Brown 1938). Indeed, until a print of the first chart was discovered, the oldest known Gulf Stream chart was not by Franklin and Folger but one published by De Brahm in 1772. 1 A note describing the discovery and showing a facsimile of the whole chart was published by Richardson (1980).
