At the time when the Rajah Shahaji transferred his allegiance from the fallen house of the Naizam Shahi sultans to that of the still prosperous Adil Shahi dynasty and in the service of that government entered upon the sphere of his proconsular authority in the Karnatic, he had left his Maharashtra jahgirs, as we have seen, under the able administration of the loyal Dadaji Kondadev. These jahgir estates comprised the districts of Poona, Supa, Indapur, Daramati and a portion of the Maval country. This was the sole patrimony derived by Shivaji from his illustrious father at the time he embarked upon his political career. Even these districts were held on the sufferance of the Bijapur government and were saddled with feudal burdens. That government was in a position to have cancelled or annexed these jahgirs at any time.

Abstract The Indian insurance industry was thrown open to competition from the private sector in the year 2000. The opening up of the industry has helped insurance customers in general and the private insurers in particular. The private insurers have been growing on an average of 77% since its inception. People purchased private sector‘s insurance products mainly because of their professional approach and better service. Yet, their customers are not ready to recommend them to others. This is because of lack of confidence and trustworthiness. So, the author is of the opinion that, private insurers have taken off but still have a long way to go… Introduction The year 2000 was a defining moment in the history of Indian Insurance. For the first time the sector was opened up to private sector. Today, Insurance happens to be a mega business in India. It is a business growing at the rate of 15 to 20 percent annually, together with banking services it adds about 7% of the GDP. Yet nearly 80% of the population is without life insurance cover. Though the life insurance penetration and the density has reached to 4.10% of GDP and $ 33.2 respectively in the year 2006-07, it is still very low when compared to international standards.     CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION CHAPTER 1 Introduction The Western region of India is one of the World’s hottest biodiversity hotspots (M^ittmeier, 1998, 2004). It mainly comprises mountain passes locally called ‘Ghats’ 'I or ‘Bari’ (Mahabale, 1987). The Western Ghats (WG) is also known as ‘Sahyadri Mountains’, a range all along the ‘Western Side’ of India. It consists of flat topped mountains, valleys, ravines, knolls, scre^etc. The region is bounded by the ‘Arabian Sea’ on the west (Bawa et al, 2007; Map 1.2). The Western Ghats of Maharashtra (WGM) lies between 72° 61’ to 74° 40’E and 15° 60’ to 20° 75’ N covering about 52,000 km. area from Daman to Terekhol creek (Gogate and Jagtap, 1997; Bawa, 2007). The WGM varies in altitude from 20m to 2000m above sea level. The North-South stretch of Western Ghats is about 750 km. and average breadth is of 80 km. The range starts near the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra states, south of the river Tapi, and runs approximately 1600 km through the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerala ending at Kanyakumari covering an area of about 180,000 km^. Maharashtra state is essentially a part of Western India. The state covers a larger part of Indian Peninsula, lying between the latitude 22° 1’ to 16° 4’ N and longimde 72° 6’ to 80° 9’ E. It is about 800 km east- west and 700 km north-south forming an irregular dentate pentagon. It covers an area of 3,07690 sq. km. The state is bounded on the west by the Arabian Sea, making a long coast line of about 720 km on the north-west by Gujarat, on the north by Madhya Pradesh, on the south-east by Andhra Pradesh and on the south by Karnataka and Goa (Map 1.1).

Pune forts are the historical symbol for the Maharashtra. There are various types of forts situated in every location of Pune. Most of the forts are built-up on Mountains. Forts are built up in such a way that it attracts the people to come again and again for visit. The researcher has selected tourist as a target group to carry out this research and local community people. The researcher summoned up this research by gathering the data about types of clientele who frequently visit the forts. The respondents are mainly classified as per age, gender, income level, leisure time, likes and dislikes of them. People prefer to visit forts as per seasons also. There is number of tourist who wanted to visit forts for trekking but due to lack of facility i.e. , accessibility, transportation, food, technology, guide facility, parking facility, shops for purchasing trekking equipment and accessories in emergency, they avoid to visit forts for trekking. No proper safety and security at the place of forts. No emergency services are available nearby forts. However tourists visit forts again and again to various forts for trekking in Pune.
