THE VILLA’S VOICE | MAY 2016 | 3 Travel Tours • Family Trips • Cruises • Reunions STAR STRUCK, AT THE NEW CASA KIMBERLY, IN PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO n harriet Soltoff BEFORE JOHN HOUSTON’S 1964 film, The Night of the Iguana was filmed there, Puerto Vallarta was a sleepy fishing village. All that be- gan to change when Elizabeth Taylor arrived to keep an eye on her lover, Richard Burton, while he was filming with the voluptuous Ava Gardner. The publicity buzz about Burton and Taylor’s torrid affair, plus the success of the movie, put Vallarta on the tourist map. Richard Burton purchased a Casita (Mexican home) from John Houston, for Liz’s 32nd birthday. It was called Casa Kimberly, named for the builder’s daughter. A short time later, Burton bought the Casita across the street, and commissioned a bridge to connect the two houses. The bridge was named “Puente d’amor” (love bridge, designed as a replica of the Bridge of Sighs in Venice), and became a Vallarta landmark. After Liz’s death the home fell into disrepair. Purchased several years ago by a local restaurateur, planning and renovations were done to restore the property. Reopened in December, 2015, the end result is even better than the original. It is now a luxury boutique hotel and includes the “Iguana” restaurant on an upper level. Some of Liz’s memorabilia have been retained, including her bedroom and a pink marble heart shaped bathtub. The bridge has also been restored and is a favorite photo spot for visitors. o T gain entrance, you ring a large bell over the door. Just inside you’ll be greeted by a life-size sculpture of Liz and Richard embrac- ing, on a bench. A wide staircase takes you up to the al fresco space of the Iguana hotel, while a larger than life portrait of Liz looks down on you as you climb the stairs. COOKING CLUB n ronda Dorfman ON WEDNESDAY night, April 6, 2016 the Cooking Club had an Easter/Passover celebration dinner. It was hosted by Jeanne Smythe, Beryl Drexler and their committee. The tables were beautifully decorated with festive Easter baskets and Sedar plates. Colorful cloth napkins and fresh flowers added to the Holiday experience. The traditional foods were outstanding. Each woman decided which holiday they wanted to cook for, and both were well represented. We had 23 women in attendance for a great turnout, and wonderful dining evening. Thank you to all who participated.
