Map 2)1. The group also consists of the presbytery, a primary school and school house, as well as a church hall which has been incorporated into the school 2. The surrounding churchyard wall and the lych gate are also Grade II Listed. The historic interest of these buildings is further enhanced by the fact that they were designed by the architect A. W. N. Pugin. Their importance to the historic character of the wider settlement is further emphasised by their inclusion within the Brewood Conservation Area (004) (cf. Map 1 above). SITE DESCRIPTION AND PLANNING HISTORY 1.1 Application Site 1.1.1 The Application Site relates to an unlisted traditional farmhouse along Gunstone Lane in Codsall. Access is currently afforded from the access to the main farm buildings from Gunstone Lane. These farm buildings are subject to a current planning proposal for their conversion (under 20/00530/FUL) and the subsequent separation of the site. 1.1.2 The site to the northern boundary with the lane is characterised by a hedgerow which runs along Gunstone Lane. A number of mature trees are present across the north western and western parts of the site. Access is afforded from the east of the dwelling with a substantial garden area south, west and north west. 1.1.3 A group of agricultural buildings lies to the south of the dwellinghouse. Abstract This thesis examines the physical legacy left by the unification of the Kingdom of England during the tenth century, and seeks to redress the way in which the Kingdom of Mercia is often overlooked or discounted in the traditional historical narrative. It principally examines the means by which Æthelflæd of Mercia extended political and military control over the West Midlands, both in terms of physical infrastructure and through ‘soft’ power in terms of economic control and material culture. It uses landscape archaeology, artefactual and textual evidence to compare Mercia with its ally, Wessex, and assess the different means by which Æthelflæd of Mercia and her brother Edward the Elder were able to consolidate and expand their territory, the physical infrastructure they established in order to defend it, and the ways in which these sites developed in response to the changing political, military and economic climates of the later tenth century.

    Codsall to Chillington Hall Circular Walk A pleasant walk from Codsall which follows the Staffordshire Way northwards before passing around Chillington Hall and its impressive parkland. The walk then follows an old trackway through woodland before returning to Codsall through Codsall Wood and the graveyard of St Nicholas's Church. There is also a pub at Codsall Wood Map: OS Explorer 242 Telford,Ironbridge and The Wrekin Bus Route: Travel West Midlands Service 535 (Wolverhampton - Codsall) Chillington Farm 1 From the car park cross over the main road and walk north along Church Road (signposted St Nicholas' Church). You have now joined the route of the Staffordshire Way. Continue through houses and past St Nicholas' Church on the left (at which point Church Road becomes Sandy Lane), and after 100 metres fork off to the left down a track by the side of Hyde Park Cottage. The area around the church, on the top of the hill, was the original hub of the village with a windmill, livestock pound, forge, bakery and public house. 2 Follow the track to a stile on the right immediately after New House Farm. Cross the stile, and bear left following the Staffordshire Way over four small fields to arrive at a Chillington Hall footbridge over Moat Brook. 3 Cross the bridge and follow the path gently uphill keeping the fence on your left to emerge on a lane in front of some houses.

SYNOPSIS There was a high concentration of royal free chapels in south Staffordshire during the later medieval period. These were churches for which the Crown claimed complete freedom from all ordinary ecclesiastical jurisdiction. Following on from the work of D Styles and J H Denton, this thesis examines the origins of these churches, and the reasons for their special status and high concentration in south Staffordshire. This study shows that the majority of the royal free chapels in south Staffordshire began life as conventional middle Saxon minster churches, whilst the remainder were lesser minsters, created at some time during the Anglo-Saxon period. Using multi-disciplinary techniques, the extent of the minster parishes surrounding these churches was determined; and the royal free chapels were shown to have been founded within an already well organised and ancient landscape.
