Batchelor Boys - the Young Ones Book
Batchelor Boys - The Young Ones Book This is a book spin-off of the infamous TV serial, written by Ben Elton. Stark (1989) From the backnote of the book.... "Stark has more money than God and the social conscience of a dog on a croquet lawn. What's more, they know the Earth is dying. Deep in Western Australia, where the Aboriginals used to milk the trees, a planet-sized plot takes shape. Some green freaks pick up the scent. A Pommie poseur, a brain-fried Vietnam Vet, Aboriginals who lost their land ... not much against a conspiracy that controls society. But EcoAction isn't in society; it just lives in the same place, along with the cockroaches. If you're facing the richest and most disgusting conspiracy in history, you have to do more than stick up two fingers and say 'peace'." This was Ben Elton's first novel, and sold massively in Britain and Australia. It was reprinted 23 times in its' first year of publication, and sold over a million worldwide. Priced at £4.99, the ISBN number is 0 751 501 999 and is now printed by Warner Books. You can have it delivered anywhere in the world via Bookpages. Gridlock (1991) From the backnote of the book.... "Gridlock is when a city dies. Killed in the name of freedom. Killed in the name of oil and steel. Choked on carbon monoxide and strangled with a pair of fluffy dice. How did it come to this ? How did the ultimate freedom machine end up paralysing us all ? How did we end up driving to our own funeral, in somebody else's gravy train ? Deborah and Geoffrey know, but they have transport problems of their own, and anyway, whoever it was that murdered the city can just as easily murder them." Reviews of GRIDLOCK "Brilliant .. -

At a summer music festival, the feisty lead singer of an Irish folk band (Rebecca Breeds) meets a folk music-hating Theremin player (Robert Sheehan) and sparks literally fly. Characters surrounding this awkward romance include a fiercely Aussie Morris Dancer (Michael Caton), an indigenous dance troupe, a group of wine-loving empty nesters, a power tripping security guard, a wannabe girl band and some musical asylum seekers. In fact , all manner of stories collide under the meddling eye of community radio super star, Queenie (Magda SZubanski) who welcomes the campers back three summers in a row for a folking good time. Fusing romance, music and Ben Elton’s trademark wit and satirical edge, Three Summers delivers an engaging folk tale of contemporary Australia with the soundtrack and belly laughs for the summer to come. Also starring Deb Mailman, John Waters, Kelton Pell, Jacqueline McKenzie, Peter Rowsthorn, and the Bondi hipsters’ Christiaan Van Vuuren and Nick Boshier. THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY As a storyteller and comedian, Australia (and Western Australia in particular) has greatly shaped Ben Elton’s thinking The inspiration for his fictional “Westival” festival is a small country town music event that happens at the end of April. -
Introduction
Introduction This thesis provides me with an opportunity to combine two interests, firstly, my concern for the environment, and secondly, my personal interest in British literature and comedy, and more specifically the work of comedian and novelist Ben Elton. Today, environmental change is a hot issue (excusez le mot), and linking it with English literature, or rather British comedy in particular, will hopefully provide an original and productive meeting between two frameworks. I intend to shed a fresh light upon a global problem about which a great deal has already been said, and remains to be said. Another reason why I have chosen this subject is the fact that the environment, and especially its change, has become a prominent issue over the past decades. Climate Change or Global Warming and related issues such as air pollution, the hole in the planet’s protective ozone layer, the harmful effects of acid rain, the disappearance of snow on permanently frosted slopes, the melting of polar ice-caps, the subsequent rise of the sea level, the overcutting of the world’s last remaining great forests, the loss of topsoil and groundwater, the overfishing and toxic poisoning of the oceans, the fact that we are drowning in our own garbage, the increasing rate of extinction of plant and animal species. the potential danger of UV-rays,… all of these things and their apocalyptic potentialities have become an ever- increasing aspect of worry for many people over the past twenty to thirty years. In the seventies and eighties environmental concern was primarily the domain of young subcultures such as hippies and punks. -
