  • Batchelor Boys - the Young Ones Book
Batchelor Boys - The Young Ones Book This is a book spin-off of the infamous TV serial, written by Ben Elton. Stark (1989) From the backnote of the book.... "Stark has more money than God and the social conscience of a dog on a croquet lawn. What's more, they know the Earth is dying. Deep in Western Australia, where the Aboriginals used to milk the trees, a planet-sized plot takes shape. Some green freaks pick up the scent. A Pommie poseur, a brain-fried Vietnam Vet, Aboriginals who lost their land ... not much against a conspiracy that controls society. But EcoAction isn't in society; it just lives in the same place, along with the cockroaches. If you're facing the richest and most disgusting conspiracy in history, you have to do more than stick up two fingers and say 'peace'." This was Ben Elton's first novel, and sold massively in Britain and Australia. It was reprinted 23 times in its' first year of publication, and sold over a million worldwide. Priced at £4.99, the ISBN number is 0 751 501 999 and is now printed by Warner Books. You can have it delivered anywhere in the world via Bookpages. Gridlock (1991) From the backnote of the book.... "Gridlock is when a city dies. Killed in the name of freedom. Killed in the name of oil and steel. Choked on carbon monoxide and strangled with a pair of fluffy dice. How did it come to this ? How did the ultimate freedom machine end up paralysing us all ? How did we end up driving to our own funeral, in somebody else's gravy train ? Deborah and Geoffrey know, but they have transport problems of their own, and anyway, whoever it was that murdered the city can just as easily murder them." Reviews of GRIDLOCK "Brilliant ..

  • Community Management of Wild Vicuña in Bolivia As a Relevant Case to Explore Community- Based Conservation Under Common Property Regimes, As Explained in Chapter 1
Community-based Conservation and Vicuña Management in the Bolivian Highlands by Nadine Renaudeau d’Arc Thesis submitted to the University of East Anglia for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2005 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author’s prior, written consent. Abstract Abstract Current theory suggests that common property regimes, predicated on the community concept, are effective institutions for wildlife management. This thesis uses community-based conservation of vicuña in the Bolivian highlands as a case study to re-examine this theory. Vicuña is a wild South American camelid living in the high Andes. Its fibre is highly valued in international markets, and trade of vicuña fibre is controlled and regulated by an international policy framework. Different vicuña management systems have been developed to obtain fibre from live- shorn designated vicuña populations. This thesis analyses whether the Bolivian case study meets three key criteria for effective common property resource management: appropriate partnerships across scale exist; supportive local-level collective action institutions can be identified; and deriving meaningful benefits from conservation is possible. This thesis adopts a qualitative approach for the collection and analysis of empirical data. Data was collected from 2001 to 2003 at different levels of governance in Bolivia, using a combination of ethnographic techniques, and methods of triangulation. Community-level research was undertaken in Mauri-Desaguadero and Lipez-Chichas fieldwork sites.

  • James Bond: an International Cultural History
Richmond, the American International University in London November 2015 COURSE SPECIFICATION DOCUMENT Academic School / Department: CASS Programme: BA History FHEQ Level: 5 Course Title: James Bond: An International Cultural History Course Code: HST 5500 Course Leader: Martin D. Brown Student Engagement Hours: 120 (standard 3- credit BA course) Lectures: 22.5 Seminar / Tutorials: 22.5 Independent / Guided Learning: 75 Semester: Summer Credits: 12 UK CATS credits 6 ECTS credits 3 US credits Course Description: James Bond (007) is a global brand: for sixty years a hugely popular cultural icon, with around half of the planet having seen a Bond film. Bond is a quintessentially British creation; yet his adventures were set on a global stage and reflect the contemporary political milieu – from fighting communists with his American cousins to today battles with terrorists, media barons and assorted megalomaniacs. This course is therefore also a study of the second half of the twentieth century – particularly the special relationship between the US and the UK. Equally relevant are issues related to branding, class, race, gender, product placement and popular music. Students will visit key historical sites related to the history of Bond, using locations (particularly in London) as well as both the books and films as a means to study international history, as well as cultural and political change. Special note: site visits may change subject to availability and faculty expertise. Prerequisites: ARW 4195 or GEP 4180 or HST 3205 Aims and Objectives: To introduce students to contemporary, post-1945 international history through the character of James Bond. Richmond, the American International University in London November 2015 To place the Bond character within a wider cultural, political and historical framework.
