  • Imagine Waking up Each Morning and Wondering Who Will Have Changed. Illustrated by Richard Wagner
GLASS EYES IN PORCELAIN FACES JACK WESTLAKE IMAGINE WAKING UP EACH MORNING AND WONDERING WHO WILL HAVE CHANGED. ILLUSTRATED BY RICHARD WAGNER IMAGINE THAT BEING THE FIRST THING YOU THINK OF AS YOU WAKE 40 Imagine that being the first thing you think of as you wake. As you get out of bed. As you shower, dress, eat breakfast. As you walk out the door and head to work. Imagine what it’s like to get on the tube, scan- ning the packed carriage for a too-perfect face, for a pair of eyes more vacant than all the others. Imagine seeing such a face on the head of someone whose name you don’t know, but who you recognise from your commute at the start of each day. Someone you always nod to, and who always nods back as you both sway and jolt with the move- ment of the carriage, acknowledgment that never develops into con- versation. Imagine seeing them one morning – this morning – like usual. Now imagine that their face has changed, apparently overnight. It’s a doll’s face. Near-white porcelain, with wide blue eyes made of glass. Imagine how it feels, knowing that only you can see this. Imag- ine they look at you. Imagine how it feels when, despite the change, despite them not being them anymore, they nod at you like usual. This is what my life has become. At the office building I do my best to avoid the concierge, but it’s no good – you have to pass the main reception desk to get to the lifts.

  • “The Heeey Baby Days of Beach Music,” Bill Deal Would Have to Be a Significant Part of the Book Or the Title Would Ring Hollow for Many
16 I knew from the very beginning that if the title of the book was going to be “The Heeey Baby Days of Beach Music,” Bill Deal would have to be a significant part of the book or the title would ring hollow for many. I did not know Bill personally but I knew I needed to make contact with him and was surprised at how acces- sible the legend appeared to be: Email from Bill Deal August 1, 2003: Hi Greg - Bill Deal here - I cannot ‘open’ the file you sent but would be delighted to be a part and be helpful if possible. I’m afraid you’d have to send it the easiest way imaginable - HA! Thanks for thinking of us - Bill After I completed my first draft of “Ain’t No Bill Deal”, I sent Bill a copy. I had no idea what to expect but I knew that anyone that answers emails with “CHEERS” had a sense of humor. After all, the story poked fun at Bill & The Rhondels in the latter days of the Disco age. I had pointed out in the story that Bill & the Rhondells were discoing in the 70’s, and “YMCA” was on their play list. What horror I thought back then, a great name like Bill Deal doing disco. How would Bill react to my story? Email from Bill Deal Aug 7, 2003 this is GREAT stuff!! Thanks for including us! You can reach me at 757 - 425 - 7776 or [email protected] CHEERS! and BEST of luck!! THANKS AGAIN! bd Written by Bill Deal on November 20, 2003 for publication in When I went to Bill’s Web site and saw “We should have been arrested “The Heeey Baby Days of Beach Music.” for wearing those suits”, I knew Bill was the real deal.

Compare & Contrast YESTERDAY&TODAY BY ALEXIS BURLING an African-American, he faced discrimination. And he was born blind in both eyes. But Stevie didn’t let his blindness hold him back. He climbed trees. He played ball. He sang solos in his church choir. And above all, he made his own music. By the age of 4, he was writing songs for the harmonica and bongos. In the late 1950s, Detroit was home to one of the most important record companies in the world: Motown Records. Its president, Berry Gordy Jr., was known for finding superstars. • The Music of Donny Hathaway Everything Is Everything Donny Hathaway, 1970
SUMPTUOUS SOUL: THE MUSIC OF DONNY HATHAWAY EVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING DONNY HATHAWAY, 1970 Keisha Hicks A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2014 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Rebecca Mancuso, Graduate Faculty Representative Ellen Berry Radhika Gajjala © 2014 Keisha Hicks All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor The song “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway is played only once a year during the holiday season. His presence is so strong during the holidays for African Americans because he is one of the distinctive cultural markers of the season. The question at hand is why is he relegated to the Christmas season but what about the rest of the year. In 2010, National Public Radio (NPR) created the series 50 Great Voices as a way to expose NPR listeners to artists who were not at the forefront of public consciousness. On June 26, 2010 Donny Hathaway debuted as the “Neglected Heart of Soul” but does “neglected” hold up. I believe “neglected” becomes situational depending on who is doing the remembering. The objective of my dissertation is to locate Donny Hathaway as a central figure in 1970s Soul music, to understand his growing influence over contemporary artists, and his musical legacy. I used Stuart Hall’s “representation” as my overarching theoretical framework. I wanted a theory that would be fluid enough to be relevant in the different phases of Donny Hathaway’s musical career. By using representation I was able to identify and understand the musical influences on Donny Hathaway.
