The Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Management Area (hereafter Patoka River Refuge or the Refuge) represents one of the largest intact bottomland hardwood forests in southern Indiana, with meandering oxbows, marshes, ponds, managed moist-soil units, and constructed wetlands that provide diverse and suitable habitat for wildlife. Refuge personnel strive to protect, restore, and manage this bottomland hardwood ecosystem and associated habitats for a variety of wildlife. The Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) lists many species of management priority (McCoy 2008), but Odonata are not included, even though they are known to occur on the Refuge. The absence of Odonata from the CCP is the result of lack of information about this ecologically important group of organisms. Therefore, we conducted a survey, from May to October 2009, to document their presence, with special attention being paid to rare, threatened, and endangered species. A total of 43 dragonfly and damselfly species were collected and identified. No threatened or endangered species were found on the Refuge, but three species were found that are considered imperiled in Indiana based on Nature Serve Ranks (Stein 2002). Additionally, 19 new odonate records were documented for Pike County, Indiana. The results of this survey will be used by Refuge personnel to assist in management decisions and to help establish priorities for the Patoka River Refuge activities and land acquisition goals. -
The Phylogeny of the Zygopterous Dragonflies As Based on The
THE PHYLOGENY OF THE ZYGOPTEROUS DRAGON- FLIES AS BASED ON THE EVIDENCE OF THE PENES* CLARENCE HAMILTON KENNEDY, Ohio State University. This paper is merely the briefest outline of the writer's discoveries with regard to the inter-relationship of the major groups of the Zygoptera, a full account of which will appear in his thesis on the subject. Three papers1 by the writer discussing the value of this organ in classification of the Odonata have already been published. At the beginning, this study of the Zygoptera was viewed as an undertaking to define the various genera more exactly. The writer in no wise questioned the validity of the Selysian concep- tion that placed the Zygopterous subfamilies in series with the richly veined '' Calopterygines'' as primitive and the Pro- toneurinae as the latest and final reduction of venation. However, following Munz2 for the Agrioninae the writer was able to pick out here and there series of genera where the devel- opment was undoubtedly from a thinly veined wing to one richly veined, i. e., Megalagrion of Hawaii, the Argia series, Leptagrion, etc. These discoveries broke down the prejudice in the writer's mind for the irreversibility of evolution in the reduction of venation in the Odonata orders as a whole. Undoubt- ably in the Zygoptera many instances occur where a richly veined wing is merely the response to the necessity of greater wing area to support a larger body. As the study progressed the writer found almost invariably that generalized or connecting forms were usually sparsely veined as compared to their relatives. -

May This dissertation explores the life history and behavior of the Tiger Spiketail dragonfly (Cordulegaster erronea Hagen) and provides recommendations for the conservation of the species. Like most species in the genus Cordulegaster and the family Cordulegastridae, the Tiger Spiketail is geographically restricted, patchily distributed with its range, and a habitat specialist in habitats susceptible to disturbance. Most Cordulegastridae species are also of conservation concern and the Tiger Spiketail is no exception. However, many aspects of the life history of the Tiger Spiketail and many other Cordulegastridae are poorly understood, complicating conservation strategies. In this dissertation, I report the results of my research on the Tiger Spiketail in New Jersey. The research to investigate life history and behavior included: larval and exuvial sampling; radio- telemetry studies; marking-resighting studies; habitat analyses; observations of ovipositing females and patrolling males, and the presentation of models and insects to patrolling males. -

CANNINGS2,3 ABSTRACT Five species of the damselfly genus Lestes live in British Columbia, Canada, and of these, Lestes forcipatus Rambur and L. disjunctus Selys are the most similar and most difficult to separate morphologically. Females can be readily distinguished by the size of the ovipositor, but males are difficult to separate. In British Columbia, L. disjunctus is the more common, widespread and familiar species. Before 1998, L. forcipatus speci- mens were mistaken for those of L. disjunctus because the former is primarily an eastern North American species and because most Lestes species are usually identified using male characters. With the discovery that L. forcipatus is part of the western fauna, an evaluation of the relative status of the two species in British Columbia is necessary. The best method for separating the two species uses the length of the anterior lamina (part of the secondary genitalia) as a unique character or as part of ratios using other measure- ments. In addition, in at least western North America, L. forcipatus males are more pru- inescent than those of L. disjunctus, especially on the thorax. Identification using the pruinescence pattern was tested in the field and is recommended as a simple and accu- rate method for western North America. Soaking Odonata specimens in acetone, a com- mon technique used to preserve colours, damages surface pruinescence and should not be used to preserve mature, pruinescent adults, including those of Lestes species. -

The center of its North American range is near the shore of the Hudson Bay in the southern Hudson Bay Taiga ecoregion (Donnelly 2004). The primary range for this species extends from Canada to north central Europe and across Siberia to Japan (Mead 2003). Areas in Canada where it is found include the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and western provinces eastward to Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces. In addition to Alaska, A. subarctica has been found in northern states such as Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, Oregon, and Washington (Needham et al. 2000). The species is very spottily distributed and exceedingly rare in the northern United States, but more locales are being discovered through increased survey effort. Until the 1900s, A. subarctica was only known from three records from in the U.S., including one from New York. Presently, over 20 U.S. records exist (New York Natural Heritage Program 2011, Donnelly 2004). The species was recently located in Massachusetts (Nikula et al. 2001) and the distribution in Maine expanded three-fold during recent atlas efforts (Brunelle and deMaynadier 2005). Records increased in New Hampshire as well, during the dragonfly survey (P. Hunt, personal communication). As a boreal species, A. subarctica was probably much more widespread during colder times than in the recent past, so it is likely that the appearance of these glacial relict populations along the southern range margin are the result of increased collecting effort rather than a recent southward range expansion. -

This duality highlights the urgency of developing a comprehensive conser- vation assessment of the region’s 228 resident odonate species. We offer a prioritization framework modified from NatureServe’s method for assessing conservation status ranks by assigning a single regional vulnerability metric (R-rank) reflecting each species’ degree of relative extinction risk in the northeastern USA. We calculated the R-rank based on 3 rarity factors (range extent, area of occupancy, and habitat specificity), 1 threat factor (vulnerability of occupied habitats), and 1 trend factor (relative change in range size). We combine this R-rank with the degree of endemicity (% of the species’ USA and Canadian range that falls within the region) as a proxy for regional responsibility, thereby deriving a list of species of combined vulnerability and regional management responsibility. Overall, 18% of the region’s odonate fauna is imperiled (R1 and R2), and peatlands, low-gradient streams and seeps, high-gradient headwaters, and larger rivers that harbor a disproportionate number of these species should be considered as priority habitat types for conservation. -
