  • T and Analysis of Walkability in Hong Kong
Measurement and Analysis of Walkability in Hong Kong By: Michael Audi, Kathryn Byorkman, Alison Couture, Suzanne Najem ZRH006 Measurement and Analysis of Walkability in Hong Kong An Interactive Qualifying Project Report Submitted to the faculty of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute In partial fulfillment of the requirements for Degree of Bachelor of Science In cooperation with Designing Kong Hong, Ltd. and The Harbour Business Forum On March 4, 2010 Submitted by: Submitted to: Michael Audi Paul Zimmerman Kathryn Byorkman Margaret Brooke Alison Couture Dr. Sujata Govada Suzanne Najem Roger Nissim Professor Robert Kinicki Professor Zhikun Hou ii | P a g e Abstract Though Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour is world-renowned, the harbor front districts are far from walkable. The WPI team surveyed 16 waterfront districts, four in-depth, assessing their walkability using a tool created by the research team and conducted preference surveys to understand the perceptions of Hong Kong pedestrians. Because pedestrians value the shortest, safest, least-crowded, and easiest to navigate routes, this study found that confusing routes, unsafe or indirect connections, and a lack of amenities detract from the walkability in Hong Kong. This report provides new data concerning the walkability in harbor front districts and a tool to measure it, along with recommendations for potential improvements. iii | P a g e Acknowledgements Our team would like to thank the many people that helped us over the course of this project. First, we would like to thank our sponsors Paul Zimmerman, Dr. Sujata Govada, Margaret Brooke, and Roger Nissim for their help and dedication throughout our project and for providing all of the resources and contacts that we required.

The Globalization of Chinese Food ANTHROPOLOGY OF ASIA SERIES Series Editor: Grant Evans, University ofHong Kong Asia today is one ofthe most dynamic regions ofthe world. The previously predominant image of 'timeless peasants' has given way to the image of fast-paced business people, mass consumerism and high-rise urban conglomerations. Yet much discourse remains entrenched in the polarities of 'East vs. West', 'Tradition vs. Change'. This series hopes to provide a forum for anthropological studies which break with such polarities. It will publish titles dealing with cosmopolitanism, cultural identity, representa tions, arts and performance. The complexities of urban Asia, its elites, its political rituals, and its families will also be explored. The global financial crisis did not have a significant impact on Hong Kong’s food & beverage imports and spending on food. Economic growth in Hong Kong is expected to be around 5% in 2010, benefitting from the continued economic growth in Mainland China. In addition, it is expected that Hong Kong will remain as one of the top 5 markets for U.S. consumer ready food products in 2011, continuing to be a major buying center and transshipment point for China and Southeast Asia. However, rents and wages are on the rise in Hong Kong and inflation may limit Hong Kong’s future economic growth. In addition, Mainland China is expected to take austerity measures to cool down its economy in late 2010 and 2011 and these measures could also impact Hong Kong’s economic growth. Even with lower economic growth, post expects that U.S. products will continue to fair well due to competitive prices and consumer confidence in the quality and safety of U.S.

  • Determinants of Eating at Local and Western Fast-Food Venues in an Urban Asian Population: a Mixed Methods Approach Nasheen Naidoo1, Rob M
Naidoo et al. International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity (2017) 14:69 DOI 10.1186/s12966-017-0515-x RESEARCH Open Access Determinants of eating at local and western fast-food venues in an urban Asian population: a mixed methods approach Nasheen Naidoo1, Rob M. van Dam2,3, Sheryl Ng2, Chuen Seng Tan2, Shiqi Chen4, Jia Yi Lim4, Mei Fen Chan4, Ling Chew4 and Salome A. Rebello2* Abstract Background: Like several Southeast Asian countries, Singapore has a complex eating-out environment and a rising eating-out prevalence. However the determinants and drivers of eating-out in urban Asian environments are poorly understood. Methods: We examined the socio-demographic characteristics of persons who frequently ate away from home in local eateries called hawker centres and Western fast-food restaurants, using data from 1647 Singaporean adults participating in the National Nutrition Survey (NNS) 2010. We also assessed the underlying drivers of eating out and evaluated if these were different for eating at local eateries compared to Western fast-food restaurants using 18 focus group discussions of women (130 women). Results: Participants reported a high eating-out frequency with 77.3% usually eating either breakfast, lunch or dinner at eateries. Main venues for eating-out included hawker centres (61.1% usually ate at least 1 of 3 daily meals at this venue) and school/workplace canteens (20.4%). A minority of participants (1.9%) reported usually eating at Western fast-food restaurants. Younger participants and those of Chinese and Malay ethnicity compared to Indians were more likely to eat at Western fast-food restaurants.
