SHAKER SCHOOLS FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2007 From the President As President of the Shaker Schools Foundation, I am pleased to report on the results of the 2007 fi scal year, which is very short, by intention. The Board decided to change our fi scal year from a calendar cycle to a project period that corresponds with the Shaker Heights City School District. Therefore, FY2006 and FY2008 are 12-month periods, and FY2007 is a 6-month period, from Janu- ary 1 through June 30, 2007. We may have been “short” on time, but our community continued to be “long” on generosity. The Shaker Schools Foundation is most apprecia- tive of our dedicated donors, and I am grateful to each member of our board and staff, as well as to the administration and School Board. It is a pleasure to collaborate with all of them on behalf of Shaker’s extraordinary schools. The Shaker Schools Foundation exists to provide resources to enrich the educational experiences of students in the Shaker Heights City Schools. During 2007, our donors helped us to fulfi ll our mission through grants to 36 teachers for projects such as the purchase of magnetic levitation vehicles to teach a supplemental physics unit to ninth graders; increased support for the Minority Achievement Committee’s programs at the High School; and awards to recognize the academic and extra-curricular accomplishments of 38 students. Much of our fundraising focused on the Auditorium Campaign to renovate and restore the large auditorium at Shaker Heights High School. Early in the year we met the Ratner Challenge, which helped the Foundation reach the $500,000 mark in its fundraising. In March we launched a seat endowment campaign at A Night for the Red & White, and we held a “curtain lowering” event for donors in early May. By June 2007, the total raised for the large auditorium project was nearly $785,000. These are but a few of the highlights of our quick year, and we hope you enjoy reviewing this Annual Report for more details. Thank you again for making the Shaker Schools Foundation’s ongoing service to the Shaker Schools possible. This effort, to raise $1.2 million to update and restore the large auditorium at Shaker Heights High School, was enhanced by challenge grants from the Ratner Family and the Jonathan Lewis Foundation. By the end of the six-month 2007 fi scal year, generous donors had contributed nearly $780,000 toward the goal. The need for the project was signifi cant, considering that the large auditorium opened in 1931 and that its most re- cent update had been in 1987. The architectural fi rm of Hubbell & Benes designed Shaker Heights High School. Hubbell & Benes had been infl uential in the development of University Circle and was known for classical revival buildings, one of the most splendid of which is the Cleveland Museum of Art. Their other prominent buildings include the West Side Market, Masonic Auditorium, and St. Luke’s Hospital. It is not surprising that Shaker Heights City Schools wanted one of the area’s most prominent architects involved in such a major undertaking as the design of the new high school. Similarly, when it came time to renovate the large auditorium, the District selected City Architecture because of its reputation for restoration of historic buildings. Bids were opened in March 2007, and the School Board voted to accept the contracts in April. In early May, the Shaker Schools Foundation invited donors and friends to a reception and performance in the large auditorium, just prior to its closing. The day after Memorial Day, seat removal began. Because the project specifi ed that the seats would be refur- bished, they were transported to Michigan for the summer. Next, the chandeliers were lowered, detached, and sent away for repair and restoration. Scaffolding went up so that work on the ceiling and upper walls could proceed, along with the instal- lation of new mechanical systems. A palette of six colors, based on historic examples from the 1930s, was used to paint the walls and decorative surfaces. Work proceeded throughout the summer and fall, and the large auditorium reopened to great acclaim in January 2008. Details of those efforts will be included in the 2008 Annual Report.
