TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals face the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday in the third of four meetings between the teams this season. The Capitals are 81-102-19-11 all-time against the Flyers and 46-41-13-4 at Capital One Arena.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT Sweet Nicky - Nicklas Backstrom scored a goal versus the on Jan. 25. With that goal, Backstrom passed (197) for fifth place on the Capitals' franchise goals list, two goals shy of 200, and is looking to become the fifth player in franchise history to record 200 goals (Alex Ovechkin: 588; Peter Bondra: 472; Mike Gartner: 397; Mike Ridley: 218). Since entering the NHL in the 2007-08 season, Backstrom's 568 assists rank third in the NHL (Henrik Sedin: 583; Joe Thornton: 581). Backstrom is three assists shy of passing Shane Doan and Frank Mahovlich to rank 100th all-time in NHL history.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Shooting Gallery - John Carlson became the first defenseman in franchise history to record two-10 games in a single season, after recording 10 shots on goal against the Florida Panthers on Jan. 25. Carlson is one of two defensemen in franchise history with multiple 10-shot games (Kevin Hatcher: four). Carlson recorded his third career 10 shot game on Feb. 25, 2017, against the . This year, Jeff Petry (Montreal) and Zach Werenski (Columbus) have recorded at least 10 shots on goal, both doing so once. This season, Carlson's 38 points and 31 assists rank third among NHL defensemen. Carlson's 38 points in 49 games has surpassed 72-game total last season (9g, 28a). Carlson is on pace for a career-high 63 points, which would make Carlson the eighth defenseman in franchise history to record 60 points in a season and the first since Mike Green in 2009-10 (76 points, 19g, 57a). Additionally, Carlson is one of 28 active defensemen with 300 career points.

Star Consistency - Washington enters Wednesday's game with a record of 29-15-5, good for 63 points and first in the Metropolitan Division. This year, the Caps lead the second place by six points, two points more than they led them at this time following the All-Star break last year. Since Barry Trotz assumed the coaching position in the 2014-15 season, the Capitals have held first place during the All-Star break in the Metropolitan Division in all four seasons. Additionally, Alex Ovechkin is leading the NHL with 30 goals. That marks the first time that Ovechkin has led the NHL in goals at the All-Star break in the last four seasons. Last season, Ovechkin scored 23 goals leading up to the All-Star break, tied for fourth in the NHL.

Another Gr8 Milestone- Alex Ovechkin recorded an assist against the Florida Panthers on Jan. 25, marking his 500th career assist to become the second player in franchise history to reach the mark (Nicklas Backstrom, franchise leader with 568 assists). In addition, Ovechkin became one of 15 active players with 500 career assists and one of just three active players to record at least 500 career goals and 500 career assists (Marian Hossa, Patrick Marleau). This season, Ovechkin has 23 assists, on pace for 38 assists, which would be his highest total over the last seven seasons. Ovechkin became the second active wing in the NHL to reach 500 assists (Daniel Sedin: 635a). Of Ovechkin's 500 assists, 306 are primary assists. Ovechkin is one of eight active players to record at least 1,000 career points, ranking fifth with 1,088 points, and is one of only two active players on that list with fewer than 1,000 games played (Sidney Crosby: 1,082 points in 833 games). Ovechkin, who currently leads the NHL with 30 goals and is on pace to record 50 goals this season, is one of just three players to record at least seven 50-goal seasons in NHL history (, Mike Bossy: nine). In total, Ovechkin has recorded a goal against 127 different goaltenders.

Flying High - Nicklas Backstrom has registered 50 points (17g, 33a) in 40 career games against the Flyers, the third-highest amount of points he's registered against any team. Alex Ovechkin has earned 53 points (32g, 21a) in 47 career games against Philadelphia. Braden Holtby is 8-4-8 all time against Philadelphia with a 2.50 goals against average and a .916 save percentage.

Holts vs. Metro - In 111 career games against the Metropolitan Division, Braden Holtby is 65-26-16 with a 2.32 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. This season, Holtby ranks third in the NHL with 25 wins. Holtby is one of just three goaltenders to record three-straight 40-win seasons (Martin Brodeur, Evgeni Nabokov). This year, Holtby is on pace for 42 wins this season, and if he reaches that mark, he would be the first goaltender in NHL history with four consecutive 40-win seasons.

Niskanen has been on the ice for 33 Capitals goals at five-on-five, tied with Evgeny Kuznetsov for the fourth- most on the team, despite missing 14 games due to injury from October and November. Since joining the Capitals in the 2014-15 season, Niskanen has 17 goals and 98 assists, the second-most among Capitals defensemen during that time frame. Niskanen is one assist and three points shy from passing Karl Alzner for 14th in franchise scoring among Capitals' defensemen.

Laying it on the Line - Brooks Orpik led the team with four hits against the Florida Panthers on Jan. 25. This season, Orpik has led or co-led the Capitals in hits in 19 games and lead or co-led the team in blocked shots in 24 games this season. Orpik is tied for fifth in the NHL in hits (146) and tied for ninth in blocked shots (107) through Jan. 29. Since Orpik entered the NHL in the 2002-03 season, Orpik ranks first in hits (2,745) and sixth in blocked shots (1,653) among NHL defensemen.

Since the 2013-14 season, Wilson has drawn 163 minor penalties, the second-most in the NHL during that span (Nazem Kadri: 196), and his 2.33 drawn penalties per 60 minutes of play ranks first among all skaters with at least 150 games played since the 2013-14 season.

Put it on Net - The Capitals are 28-1-2 in games where they score at least three goals, a 21-0-0 when they score at least four goals and 11-4-0 in games where they outshoot the opponent.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT The Flyers are 16-6-1 in their last 23 games since December 4, the date of a win over Calgary that marked the end of their 10-game winless streak. During that timeframe, they have outscored their opponents 71-60 (an average of 3.10 goals per game vs. 2.61 against) and have outshot opponents 717-665. The Flyers are operating at 24.1 percent on the power play during that run (20 for 83) and are killing penalties at a 74.5 pct rate (14 for 55). They have had 28 more power play opportunities during the timeframe than they have allowed their opponents.

The Flyers are 8-3 in January, with three of those eight wins coming in overtime. Coincidentally, all three of those losses have been by a 5-1 score.

Travis Konecny comes into tonight’s game on a four-game goal-scoring streak (4G) and a five-game point-scoring streak (4-2-6), both of which are new career highs. Konecny scored the game-winning OT goal in each of the Flyers’ last two wins, with both of those goals coming 27 seconds into the OT period on the only shot in the OT for either team. Per the NHL stats bureau, Konecny is only the second Flyer to score back-to-back GWGs in overtime; Sami Kapanen did it on 12/28/05 at Atlanta and 12/29/05 at Carolina. Since 1997-98, only one other NHL player has done it with both goals coming on the only shot in the overtime period – Todd Bertuzzi did so for Detroit on Dec. 11, 2009 vs. Anaheim and Dec. 12, 2009 vs. Nashville. In his last 13 games, Konecny has six goals and six assists for 12 points; four of the six goals have been game-winners. His shooting percentage during that run has been 18.8 percent (6G on 32 shots).

Sean Couturier exits the All-Star break as the Flyers’ leading goal scorer with 26 through the first 49 games. He has demolished his previous career high of 15 goals for an entire season, and his previous career high of 39 points in a complete season has also fallen by the wayside. He set a new career high with his fifth game-winning goal on Jan. 18 vs. Toronto and is five short of his career high for assists in a season, which was 28 set in 2015-16.

Claude Giroux was tabbed as the Flyers’ representative to the 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend, where he participated in the puckhandling challenge in the skills competition and scored a goal in the Metro’s loss to the Atlantic on Sunday. It was his fifth All-Star appearance. Giroux resumes the season as the Flyers’ leading scorer, with 14 goals and 43 assists for 57 points. Giroux has won 58 percent of his faceoffs this year, which was tied for third in the league with Jonathan Toews entering last night’s action, trailing only Ryan O’Reilly and Antoine Vermette.

Jake Voracek sits one point behind Giroux with nine goals and 47 assists for 56 points. Voracek and Giroux came out of the All-Star break ranked 1-2 in assists in the league, with Voracek four ahead of Giroux and five ahead of the Islanders’ Josh Bailey and Dallas’s John Klingberg. Voracek is 12 away from his career high of 59 assists set back in 2014-15.

Robert Hagg continues to lead the NHL in hits with 171. Hagg has accrued 36 hits in the last eight games alone, including eight vs. NJD on Jan. 20 and six at NYR on Jan. 16. Hagg is a plus-13, which was fourth among rookies entering last night’s games, and was second among rookies in TOI at 18:44. He leads all rookies in blocked shots with 71.

Shayne Gostisbehere has recorded five power play goals and 13 power play assists for 18 power play points. He is tied for the league lead among defensemen with the five PPG, was tied for fifth with the 13 PPA, and is second with the 18 power play points. His 53 power play shots on goal leads all NHL blueliners. Gostisbehere’s overall total of 33 points (9G, 24A) ranks tied for seventh among all NHL defensemen.

Gostisbehere and Ivan Provorov each have nine goals on the season, which placed them both in the top seven goal-scorers among NHL defensemen entering last night’s game. They were three off PK Subban’s league-leading 12 goals. He enters his third season as head coach of the Flyers. Hakstol, 47 (7/30/1968), came to the Flyers from the University of North Dakota, where he served as the head coach of the school’s hockey program for 11 seasons. During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span.
