It changes its appearance and is reduced to elements like light, wind, water or sky. Light, wind, water or sky become the symbol of nature. Nature, which up to that point has remained definite, becomes, through its resonance with the geometry embodied in the architecture, an abstraction. Especially, the last part about the development conditions and the potential of underwater architecture needs to be researched again. New possibilities have come into the picture and new implementations are being built. A general aim is to prepare a completely revised part about development possibilities as well as a new scope and area of implementation. In order to serve this purpose, the scheme of the work has been changed in such a way as to better fit the established goal. Topicality of the set of literature research has remained unchanged. The structure of the monograph has been remodelled in order to better represent the scope of the research. The publication has been divided into three parts which will be published in separate monographs. PART 1. STUDY AND INVESTIGATIONS PART 2. DESCRIPTION AND SYSTEMATICS PART 3. A NEW SCOPE OF IMPLEMENTATION, CONDITIONS OF DEVELOPMENT All three parts will be published separately paying attention to new current studies. The first part placed in the present book describes the relevance of the topic and provides the documentation of the scope of investigations. The information from final annexes has been placed at the main body of the monograph, because it improves the logic of the science work about aquatic architecture. The full investigations presented in one of the chapters of the monograph can invite readers to participate in the research and take their own view on objects classification. It is interesting if the reader will have the same classification results as the author? The next part will focus on the description and systematics of aquatic architecture. The final part will be the realization of the aim and it will contain a new scope and conditions of implementation of the aquatic architecture. The second edition will be published in English with important changes in the structure of the work. The scope of aquatic architecture is international, so the first edition in Polish had a small range of influence. This is the reason for the preparation of the English edition. Additionally, the monographs will be published

Genes and Djinn: Identity and Anxiety in Southeast Arabia Aaron Lee Parkhurst University College London Department of Anthropology A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2013 1 Declaration ‘ I, Aaron Lee Parkhurst, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis.' 2 Abstract This thesis focuses on the ways in which identity is constructed in the United Arab Emirates in the face of rapid development and immigration. The thesis draws upon ethnographic data collected over three years in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, among other Arabian Gulf communities, to explore how foreign knowledge systems, specifically genetic models of inheritance, are incorporated into indigenous bodies of knowledge to reshape the ways in which local people see themselves in the world. Long held Gulf Arab conceptions of the self and body in relation to nature, spirits and foreigners are challenged by the promises of globalization and modernity. This conflict creates both personal and social anxiety for many local people as they attempt to consolidate desert and Islamic tradition with the ambiguity of new urban and social landscapes, creating a metaphor between Gene and Djinn. This thesis follows this conflict ethnographically through the rapid construction of a new aristocratic class of citizens in the country, and the ways in which some of them imagine their downfall. As people move through the desert, the coast and the rapidly growing cities, their quest for an elusive notion of modernity ricochets into local systems of destiny, cosmology, agency, body practices, and kinship, and the languages one uses to articulate the ‘self’ and world are transformed.

  • Fear and Money in Dubai
metropolitan disorders The hectic pace of capitalist development over the past decades has taken tangible form in the transformation of the world’s cities: the epic expansion of coastal China, deindustrialization and suburbanization of the imperial heartlands, massive growth of slums. From Shanghai to São Paolo, Jerusalem to Kinshasa, cityscapes have been destroyed and remade—vertically: the soar- ing towers of finance capital’s dominance—and horizontally: the sprawling shanty-towns that shelter a vast new informal proletariat, and McMansions of a sunbelt middle class. The run-down public housing and infrastuctural projects of state-developmentalism stand as relics from another age. Against this backdrop, the field of urban studies has become one of the most dynamic areas of the social sciences, inspiring innovative contributions from the surrounding disciplines of architecture, anthropology, economics. Yet in comparison to the classic accounts of manufacturing Manchester, Second Empire Paris or Reaganite Los Angeles, much of this work is strikingly depoliticized. Characteristically, city spaces are studied in abstraction from their national contexts. The wielders of economic power and social coercion remain anonymous. The broader political narrative of a city’s metamorphosis goes untold. There are, of course, notable counter-examples. With this issue, NLR begins a series of city case studies, focusing on particular outcomes of capitalist globalization through the lens of urban change. We begin with Mike Davis’s portrait of Dubai—an extreme concentration of petrodollar wealth and Arab- world contradiction. Future issues will carry reports from Brazil, South Africa, India, gang-torn Central America, old and new Europe, Bush-era America and the vertiginous Far East.
