They present opportunities for overseas companies to engage in China and Chinese companies to move overseas. This study seeks to review the impact of globalisation on Chinese industries from R&D through to production, service and disposal. The project team used a structured approach to review the value chains in a number of key sectors and companies, building on the framework developed for the UK’s recent review of science and innovation published by Lord Sainsbury in 2007. The team was made very welcome in a range of companies allowing new insights into their structure and evolution. For reasons of confidentiality detailed information about individual companies has been generalised but the insights and patterns remain clear. The value chain structure of the report reveals multiple opportunities for engagement by Chinese companies with the global industrial system, as well as providing a way to understand the dynamics of increasingly influential Chinese businesses. The approach has already led to an active network of senior industrialists, policy advisers and academics and we hope that this growing community will be well-placed to understand patterns of global industrial structures through what is likely to be a turbulent period.     Innovation and Upgrading pathways in the Chinese smartphone production GVC Lua Innovation and Upgrading pathways in the Chinese smartphone production GVC Jiong How Lua National University of Singapore Innovation and Upgrading pathways in the Chinese smartphone production GVC Lua Abstract This paper attends to the recent upgrading developments demonstrated by Chinese smartphone firms. Adopting a comparative approach of tearing down retail-accessible smartphones to their components, this paper traces the upgrading activities across global value chains (GVCs) that Chinese firms partake in during the production process. Upgrading is thus discovered to be diverse and complicated rather than a linear process, carrying significant implications for the production networks and supply chains in Chinese smartphone firms. Innovation and Upgrading pathways in the Chinese smartphone production GVC Lua Introduction China today is not only the world’s largest exporter of labor-intensive goods but also remains as the largest producer of personal electronics devices, surpassing the output of the US (West & Lansang, 2018). Contrary to popular belief, Chinese smartphone producers do not merely mimic their competitors, instead, innovate to “catch-up” with international competitors by upgrading across Global Value Chains (GVCs). Utilizing Liu et al. ’s (2015) illustration as a starting point, I open the dossier for both acknowledgement and critique. Figure 1. More generally we see this development as part of an increased escalation of tensions between China and the US on multiple fronts which should cap the valuation multiple for China equities, in particular in the offshore index constituents and US-listed parts of the universe. This Greek venture East in 334BC led to the establishment of the earliest version of a trade route between Constantinople (Turkey) and Xi’an (China), known as the Silkroad. 1600 years later Marco Polo would travel this route from Venice to China and work as the personal advisor of the Mongolian ruler: Kublai Khan. The accumulation of his experiences and adventures in the East came together in the brilliant travel memoire written by Rusticello da Pisa named ‘il Milione’ or commonly known as the ‘the travels of Marco Polo’.

Many major stock and bond indices developed by index providers like MSCI and FTSE include malign People’s Republic of China (PRC) companies that are listed on the Department of Commerce’s Entity List and/or the Department of Defense’s List of “Communist Chinese military companies” (CCMCs). The money flowing into these index funds – often passively, from U.S. retail investors – supports Chinese companies involved in both civilian and military production. Some of these companies produce technologies for the surveillance of civilians and repression of human rights, as is the case with Uyghurs and other Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang, China, as well as in other repressive regimes, such as Iran and Venezuela. As of December 2020, at least 24 of the 35 parent-level CCMCs had affiliates’ securities included on a major securities index. This includes at least 71 distinct affiliate-level securities issuers.
