Update History August 28, 2008: version 1.1 published. Available via Humboldt Digital Scholar: http://hdl.handle.net/2148/401

December 2008: link additions and corrections to version 1.1. Available via Humboldt Digital Scholar: http://hdl.handle.net/2148/401

January 14, 2010: version 2.0 published. Available via Humboldt Digital Scholar: http://hdl.handle.net/2148/564

Version 2.0 includes corrections, revised links, deleted entries (strikethrough), and new entries (listed in red) and reflects rankings in the Top American Research Universities, 2008 Annual Report. For version 2.0, three institutions newly-ranked in the 2008 report were reviewed for lecture content:

Scripps Research Institute University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester University of Hawaii, Manoa

Seven institutions (six of which are listed in the bibliography) dropped out of the top 50 ranking in 2008:

College of William and Mary New Mexico State University, Las Cruces (not listed) Tulane University University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati University of Delaware University of Massachusetts, Amherst University of Oregon

~ 10 ~

Rationale This selective bibliography, intended principally for librarians, provides information on university and other web sites in the offering online, on-demand public lectures.

It is hoped that this bibliography and subsequent research will encourage librarians to add more of this freely available material to library and union catalogs, where it may compliment scholarly material in other formats.

This bibliography is the first of a two-part research project. The second part will focus on questions related to the cataloging of online public lecture materials:

• How many lecture series in this bibliography are available through WorldCat?

• What level of cataloging is appropriate for lectures?

• Given current developments in OPAC and portal search technology, what should be done to make this material more accessible? Criteria for Listing The institutions listed in the first version of this bibliography were drawn from the Top American Research Universities, 2007 Annual Report issued by the Center for Measuring University Performance (available at http://mup.asu.edu/).1 The revised version has been updated to reflect institutions newly-ranked in the Center’s 2008 Annual Report. 2

Top American Research Universities, 2007 Annual Report lists “Top American Research Universities” for 2007 on pages 8 and 10, identifying “the 51 institutions (26 private, 25 public) that rank in the top 25 nationally on at least one of the nine measures” and “the 37 institutions (10 private, 28 public) that rank 26 through 50 nationally on at least one of the nine measures.”3 The nine measures are described briefly on page 7.

Top American Research Universities, 2008 Annual Report lists universities ranking in the top 25 nationally on pages 6-7 and universities ranking in the top 26-50 nationally on pages 8-9.

1 Lombadi, John V., Elizabeth D. Capaldi, and Craig W. Abbey. Top American Research Universities, 2007 Annual Report. Tempe: The Center for Measuring University Performance at Arizona State University, 2007. 2 Capaldi, Elizabeth D., John V. Lombardi, Craig W. Abbey, and Diane D. Craig. Top American Research Universities, 2008 Annual Report. Tempe: The Center for Measuring University Performance, Arizona State University, 2008. 3 There are 38 institutions, not 37, in the 26-50 ranking. ~ 11 ~

Nearly all of the universities surveyed in this bibliography provide on-demand access to public lectures. Public lecture content was not found for the following universities listed in the 2007 report:

Cornell University Weil Medical College Mount Sinai School of Medicine (http://www.mountsinai.org/Education/School%20of%20Medicine) New Mexico State University, Las Cruces (http://www.nmsu.edu/) University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/)

Public lecture content was not found for the following institutions listed in the 2008 report:

Scripps Research Institute (http://www.scripps.edu/e_index.html) University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester (http://www.umassmed.edu/index.aspx)

For version 2.0 of this bibliography, deleted entries were retained and appear with strikethroughs. The intent is to provide some indication of how often names, descriptions, and links change.

A separate section lists U.S. web sites that aggregate university lectures or list university lecture sites. This section of the bibliography is not intended to be exhaustive but to demonstrate the various methods used to present public lectures.

The focus of this bibliography is on public-lecture series offered by universities but also referenced are lecture materials that derive from symposia, colloquia, conferences, seminars, and workshops. Curricular or course lectures may be accessed through numerous sites listed in the bibliography; these represent a distinct and large category of lecture material that deserves to be considered on its own.

Sources and Research Dates The initial research for this bibliography was conducted between June 4 and July 11, 2008. Follow-up searching was done in July and August 2008 to verify links, replace links, provide additional examples, and locate additional lecture content. For version 2.0, revisions, corrections, deletions (strikethrough), and new entries (listed in red) were completed September 2009 through January 2010.

Internet search engines (primarily ) and search tools on university web sites were used to identify on-demand public lectures in audio-only or video format. While time limitations have not permitted an exhaustive listing of every lecture or lecture series

~ 12 ~

available, the prominent lectures series – those that rise to the top of a university’s site search or Google’s search results – were identified and listed.

Searching revealed that universities present public lecture materials in various ways. A number of universities offer an aggregating, central site for locating video and audio (e.g., MIT, the University of Washington, the University of Pennsylvania). Some universities consolidate their materials using the iTunes U service (e.g., Duke, Stanford) or a podcasting page (e.g., the University of Utah). Some university departments post lecture materials on a departmental lecture site. Many universities highlight on-demand lecture content through news or current events listings. No effort has been made to provide a complete representation of institutions listing on aggregators such as iTunes U, YouTube EDU, and Research Channel.

Each entry in the university section of the bibliography lists the name of the university, the name of the site providing the most direct access to the on-demand material, and site URL. When a lecture series is associated with a university as a whole, it is listed under the name of the university; when associated with a department, it is listed by department. Most web site descriptions are taken from the web sites. Examples of videos are listed to give a sense of the quality of the material that is available.

Public lectures are sometimes available through institutional repositories. A few lectures from repositories are listed in this bibliography but no systematic effort has been made to search repositories associated with the listed institutions.

The section devoted to sites aggregating material from multiple universities includes separate sections for commercial and non-commercial sites.

Description from web site: “The undergraduate lecture series is designed primarily for an undergraduate audience, covering topics from the creativity of engineering and science to entrepreneurship, ethics, and the advantages of pursuing an advanced degree. Speakers are drawn from industry and academia. Each lecture lasts approximately 50 minutes and is followed by a question and answer session and a reception honoring the speaker. The series was established in October 2002. Our goal in establishing this lecture series is to bring undergraduate engineering and science majors into the culture of attending lectures for professional development. We wish to challenge researchers and industry participants to convey to the students why they love whatever it is they do. The series is designed to introduce undergraduates to broad concepts in research and innovation.” Example: Richard Baraniuk, “On Led Zeppelin, Brainwaves, and iPods: A Quest for Structure,” October 21, 2004. http://webcast.rice.edu/webcast.php?action=details&event=30 See: Rice University, Information Technology
