The Five Precepts of the Church

In my homily on Ash Wednesday, I spoke about grave sins (also known as mortal or serious sins). I mentioned that most serious sins are listed in various places in the Bible, like the Ten Commandments, but God has given the Church the authority to make laws for us, to lead us to holiness, just as He, himself, has given us the laws in the Bible to lead us to holiness. The most important laws that the Church issues for our growth in holiness are known as the precepts of the Church. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor. This requires the faithful to sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord, as well as the principal liturgical feasts honoring the mysteries of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints; in the first place, by participating in the Eucharistic celebration, in which the Christian community is gathered, and by resting from those works and activities which could impede such a sanctification of these days. You shall confess your sins at least once a year. This ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness. You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season. This guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord's Body and Blood in connection with Easter, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. This ensures that we are prepared for the liturgical feasts and helps us acquire mastery over our instincts. We only have two days of required fasting each year: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Abstinence is not eating meat or meat products, and this is required on Ash Wednesday and Every Friday of Lent. On every other Friday of the Year outside of Lent you are also (by default) required to abstain from eating meat, but the bishops of the United States have said that you may choose on a particular, non-Lent Friday to do a different penance instead of abstaining from meat. Perhaps instead you might not watch television or say a Rosary. The point is, on every Friday of the year you are required to do some sort of penance. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church. This is done both by volunteering your time to serve your brothers and sisters in Christ and by contributing money or material goods to the Church, according to your ability. Since the Church has laid these out for our growth in holiness, to fail to do them would be like refusing to take medicine designed heal you from an illness. Any neglect of these “medicinal” precepts of the Church also constitutes grave matter leading to mortal sin. I remind you of these precepts at the beginning of Lent, so that you might examine your conscience and make a good confession, in preparation for your Easter Duty: to receive Holy Communion at least once during the Easter Season. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Adam
