This article looks into the development of the Foxconn Corporation to understand the advent of capi- tal expansion and its impact on frontline workers’ lives in China. It also pro- vides an account of how the state facilitates Foxconn’s production expansion as a form of monopoly capital. Foxconn stands out as a new phenomenon of capital expansion because of the incomparable speed and scale of its capital accumulation in all regions of China. This article explores how the workers at Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer, have been subjected to work pressure and desperation that might lead to suicides on the one hand but also open up daily and collective resistance on the other hand. • Chapter 2 Hon Hai/Foxconn: Which Way Forward ?
Chapter 2 Hon Hai/Foxconn: which way forward ? Gijsbert van Liemt 1 1. Introduction Hon Hai/Foxconn, the world's leading contract manufacturer, assembles consumer electronics products for well-known brand-names. It is also a supplier of parts and components and has strategic alliances with many other such suppliers. Despite its size (over a million employees; ranked 32 in the Fortune Global 500) and client base (Apple, HP, Sony, Nokia), remarkably little information is publicly available on the company. The company does not seek the limelight, a trait that it shares with many others operating in this industry. Quoted on the Taiwan stock exchange, Hon Hai Precision Industry (HHPI) functions as an ‘anchor company’ for a conglomerate of companies. 2 As the case may be, HHPI is the sole, the majority or a minority shareholder in these companies and has full, partial or no control at all. Many subsidiaries use the trade name Foxconn and that is why this chapter refers to the company as Hon Hai/Foxconn. Among its many subsidiaries and affiliates are Ambit Microsystems, Cybermart, FIH Mobile, Fu Taihua Industrial, Hong Fujin Precision and Premier Image. After a near hundredfold increase in sales in the first decade of this century Hon Hai/Foxconn's sales growth slowed down drastically. The company is facing several challenges: slowing demand growth in its core (electronics) business; a weakening link with Apple, its main customer; rising labour costs and a more assertive labour force in China, its main production location; and pressure from its shareholders. 1. Kindai Management Review Vol. 4, 2016 (ISSN: 2186-6961) Managing Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) – Terry Gou and the Making of Foxconn Ho-Don Yan Feng Chia University, Taiwan Abstract To explain how Foxconn has become the global number one provider of electronic manufacturing service (EMS), this paper incorporates three main driving forces—entrepreneurship, strategic management, and leadership—to study how they contribute towards opportunity discovery, capa- bility accumulation, and firm transformation. By dividing the growth path of Foxconn into four stages, including initiation, expansion, maturity, and diversification, we examine how at each stage these three driving forces help in the making of Foxconn. We conclude that high and fast growth is no guarantee for firm endurance. The limitation of expansion in the EMS industry and impend- ing succession problem pose challenges for the longevity of Foxconn. Keywords: strategic management, dynamic capability, entrepreneurship, leadership, mergers and acquisitions, competitive advantage equipment manufacturing (OEM) (Hobday, 2001), INTRODUCTION one of the forms of EMS. • Nationalism, Alliances, and Geopolitics: US-China-Taiwan Ties Under Trump and Xi
Nationalism, Alliances, and Geopolitics: US-China-Taiwan Ties under Trump and Xi Vincent Wei-cheng Wang Professor of Political Science and Dean of College of Arts and Sciences Adelphi University Paper prepared for delivery at The American Political Science Association Annual Conference, Washington D.C. August 29 - September 1, 2019 (This paper is based on Vincent Wei-cheng Wang, “Taiwanese Perspective,” National Commentaries, The ASAN Forum (July 3, 2019). Repost with permission.) 1 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of diplomatic relations between the United States and the People’s Republic of China and the establishment of a legal framework (under the Taiwan Relations Act) to manage the unofficial relations between the U.S. and Taiwan. Both of these enduring frameworks face new challenges at systemic, interstate, and individual levels. The election of Donald Trump, who campaigned on “making America great again,” as the U.S. president and the consolidation of power as China’s leader without term limits by Xi Jinping, who is committed to bring about “national rejuvenation,” propelled populist nationalism to the forefront of each country’s foreign policy and introduced volatility and unpredictability. While the two powers are jockeying for global leadership under the guise of “trade war,” concerns arise over whether a “transactionalist” president might play the “Taiwan card” to extract concessions from China. Beijing claims Taiwan as a “core interest” that it is willing to defend with force. Xi equated the recovery of the island with “national rejuvenation” in his speech marking the 40th anniversary of “Letter to Taiwan Compatriots,” which inaugurated China’s peaceful unification campaign.
