Groups were arranged as follows: control (LSD; 160 cm2/quail and no supplementation), high stocking density (HSD; 80 cm2/quail and no supplementation), HSD-RJ 250 [80 cm2/quail and 250 mg/kg body weight (BW) RJ given orally], and HSD-RJ 500 (80 cm2/quail and 500 mg/kg BW RJ given orally). Body weight gain decreased significantly in the HSD group at day 42 (P < 0.01). Feed intake (FI) and feed conversion rate (FCR) were also significantly affected in the HSD group (P < 0.01). FI and FCR were improved by both doses of RJ. -

The role holy scarabs played to ancient Egyptians is legendary, but other religions, too, appreciated insects: the Bible mentions honey 55 times. This contribution aimed to provide background information on pet foods and the sector and to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge regarding naturalness, palatability, nutritional quality, health effects, and sustainability of insects as feed for dogs and cats. In contrast to dogs, natural diets of cats commonly contain insects but contribution to the total biomass is <0.5% in most diets. Cats and dogs can have a different palate when it comes to insects and insect species and inclusion level influence the acceptance of the food. The apparent faecal N digestibility values for insect-based foods were in the range of foods containing conventional protein sources. -

We find ourselves in a world of conflict and war. Why do people fight? Some conflict is driven by a desire to impose a value system, some by intolerance, and some by pure greed and quest for power. The struggle to obtain resources to support life is another important source of conflict; all creatures have a drive to live and sustain themselves. In 1980, Richard J. Barnet, director of the Institute for Policy Studies, warned that by the end of the 20th century, anger and despair of hungry people could lead to terrorist acts and economic class war [Staten Island Advance, Susan Fogy, July 14, 1980, p.1]. Developed nations are the largest polluters in the world; according to Mother Jones (March/April 1997, http://www. motherjones.com/mother_jones/MA97/hawken2.html), for example, Americans, “have the largest material requirements in the world ... each directly or indirectly [using] an average of 125 pounds of material every day ... Americans waste more than 1 million pounds per person per year ... less than 5 percent of the total waste ... gets recycled”. INTRODUCTION The utilization of insects as a sustainable and secure source of animal-based food for the human diet has continued to increase in popularity in recent years (Ash et al., 2010; Crabbe, 2012; Dossey, 2013; Dzamba, 2010; FAO, 2008; Gahukar, 2011; Katayama et al., 2008; Nonaka, 2009; Premalatha et al., 2011; Ramos- Elorduy, 2009; Smith, 2012; Srivastava et al., 2009; van Huis, 2013; van Huis et al., 2013; Vantomme et al., 2012; Vogel, 2010; Yen, 2009a, b). Throughout the world, a large portion of the human population consumes insects as a regular part of their diet (Fig. 18.1). Thousands of edible species have been identified (Bukkens, 1997; Bukkens and Paoletti, 2005; DeFoliart, 1999; Ramos-Elorduy, 2009). However, in regions of the world where Western cultures dominate, such as North America and Europe, and in developing countries heavily influenced by Western culture, mass media have negatively influenced the public’s percep- tion of insects by creating or reinforcing fears and phobias (Kellert, 1993; Looy and Wood, 2006). Is Insect Protein a Sustainable Alternative to Soy and Fishmeal in Poultry Feed? By Madeline A. Gaffigan University of Colorado at Boulder A thesis submitted to the University of Colorado at Boulder in partial fulfillment of the requirements to receive Honors designation in Environmental Studies May 2017 Thesis Advisors: Peter Newton, Environmental Studies, Chair Dale Miller, Environmental Studies, Honors Council Nancy Emery, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Committee 2017 by Madeline Gaffigan All rights reserved Abstract This thesis describes a research experiment examining the potential of Black Soldier Fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) (Diptera: Stratidomyidae) reared on local food waste to effectively feed poultry. Significantly less water and land is required to raise Black Soldier Fly larvae and fewer greenhouse gas emissions are generated, relative to the production of soy and fishmeal for animal feed industry. In order to account for the environmental pressure meat production puts on our environment, chickens were raised on Black Cat Farm in Longmont, CO using a more sustainable, insect-based, feed. At seven weeks of age, 127 chickens were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments (3 replicates and 14-15 birds per pen). Each chicken was weighed every three days using a fish scale and weighing basket. Feed weight was recorded using the same method; food and water were supplied ad libitum. Weights of chickens were averaged before analysis to overwrite inevitable variation between chicken and enclosure environments. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted on growth data to identify significant between treatments. After three weeks, there was no significant difference in growth rate, feed conversion, or mortality between the three feed types. -

Investigating the Use of Buckwheat Strips for the Management of Colorado Potato Beetles in Potato Production and as an Attractant of Native Pollinators for Vine Crops 1. Project Summary This project consisted of two parts. The first was to see if buckwheat strips would attract beneficial predatory insects over to adjacent planted potato rows. My hypothesis was that Colorado potato beetle larvae would have reduced numbers due to the predation by beneficial insect predators attracted by the nearby buckwheat. Compared to the control plot where no buckwheat was planted, the treatment plots showed a significant increase in larvae reduction and predation by four species of predators. The second part of the project was to see if strips of buckwheat planted next to rows of cucumbers would attract native pollinators over to the vine crops to help improve pollination (and increase marketable fruit). Compared to the control plot where no buckwheat was planted, the treatment plots had greater numbers of native bees and wasps. There also was a significant difference between the number of marketable cucumbers and those that were misshapen due to poor pollination. 2. Introduction to Topic Cover crops have great benefits for vegetable production. The cover crops can suppress weeds, reduce erosion, act as a green manure providing nutrients, and adds organic matter back to the soil. Still with all of these fine properties, cover crops still are not as commonplace on an organic farm as they should be. Many small growers have land restrictions so that every piece is needed for production. Having some tied up in cover crops means reduced sales potential in the short run. -

However, without insects earth would be a very different place. Webster’s dictionary defines pest as an animal or insect that causes problems for people, especially by damaging crops. Most insects encountered daily are not pest rather they are harmless or beneficial. Beneficial insects are any of a number of species of insects that perform vital ecological functions such as pollination, pest control, decomposition and maintenance of wildlife species. These ecological services provide an estimated annual economic value $57 billion in the United States of America. Considering the ecological and economic values, greater effort and investments should be spent in conserving these insects. NRCS-Texas Technical Note: TX-PM-14-02 Purpose: The purpose of this technical note is to provide general beneficial insect information and identify common beneficial insects and habitat that supports the occurrence of these species. Previous technical notes have addressed the value, benefit and habitat of pollinators. This technical note concentrates on insects that assist with pest management. Types of Beneficial Insects: In general, there are two kinds of pest management beneficial insects: predators and parasitoids. Predators feed directly on other insects by chewing with their mandibles or by piercing the predators and consuming the body liquids.
