The armies of Philip II and Alexander the Great had passed through the valley. During the Ottoman rule Elena became a big settlement giving shelter to many refugees from different part of Bulgarian Kingdom. Thanks to their patriotic and rebellious spirit the well-off citizens, tradesmen and chorbadjii built massive houses, churches, bridges and fountains. Elena is the only town which during the Renaissance had three churches – “Saint Nicola”, “The Assumption”, and “The Nativity of Holly Virgin”. Nature – The town of Elena is located in the foot of Elena’s Balkan, in Elena River’s valley. The climate is temperate-continental. The air is fresh and favorable to the cure of asthma and lung diseases. Elena is abundant in timber resources. REGIONAL DISPARITIES IN BULGARIA TODAY: ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND DEMOGRAPHIC CHALLENGES Sylvia S. Zarkova, PhD Student1 D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics – Svishtov, Department of Finance and Credit Abstract: To accelerate Bulgaria's economic development taking into account the specific characteristics of their regions is a serious challenge for the local governments in the country. The ongoing political and economic changes require a reassessment of the country's economic development. The aim of this study was to analyse the disparities among Bulgaria’s regions (de- fined in accordance with the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS)) by assessing the degree of economic, social and demographic chal- lenges they face and performing a multivariate comparative analysis with sets of statistically significant indicators. The analysis clearly outlines the bounda- ries of the regional disparities and the need to improve the country’s regional and cohesion policies. Key words: regional policy, differences, NUTS, taxonomic develop- ment measure. Tsenov Academy of Economics, Svishtov E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Based on archival sources not used so far, periodicals and other sources of information, the study reviews the economic life of Svishtov in the period 1878-1912, with an emphasis on the development of trade. Against this background, it examines the issue of re-directing trading capital to banking. The focus of the study is the trading-and-banking (money-changing) companies and banking houses (8 partnerships and 9 sole proprietorships). The study answers a wide range of questions concerning their emergence, institutional 1 The Editorial Board of the Economics 21 journal, accepted the study for publication with information sources quoted in the traditional manner (i.e. via footnotes) so that it would be easier for readers to follow references . Due to the specific features of this economic and historical study, which is based on consulting numerous historical sources (archival materials, periodicals, collections of documents, etc.), as well as on some surveys (papers, reports, etc.), the use of the APA Style required by the editors, in addition to technical difficulties, would make the paper somewhat ‘clumsy’ and difficult to read. 2 Assoc.
