De tekst is van de hand van de Heer Herman BALTHAZAR, Gouverneur van Oost- Vlaanderen. Zijn helder geformu leerde "Ten Geleide" bevat een reeks beschouwingen die voor ons, niet-professionele historici, bijzonder bemoedigend klinken. Wij weerhouden slechts de voornaamste. De grote historische veranderingen - zo poneert hij - hebben op het lokale vlak interessante sporen nagelaten. Talrijke speur ders die, gedreven door liefde en belangstelling voor hun regio, deze sporen natrekken met de bedoeling de leefwereld van de gewo ne mens in kaart te brengen, worden nog al eens als "amateurs" bestempeld. Geen sprake van - zo zegt hij - de soms meesterlijk door hen geschilderde werkstukken, handelend over de meest uit eenlopende lokale materies, zullen steeds de motor van de moderne geschiedschrijving blijven. Nauw contact met professionelen en desgevallend met het pas opgerichte "Centrum voor Geschiedenis" in de schoot van de Gentse universiteit (Gentse Seminarie voor Moderne Geschiedenis) is uiteraard een garantie voor kwaliteit. It has been developed as part of a joint project by the Shell Centre for Mathematical Education and the Midland Examining Group. The books were written by Steve Maddern and Rita Crust working with the Shell Centre team, including Alan Bell, Barbara Binns, Hugh Burkhardt, Rosemary Eraser, John Gillespie, Richard Phillips, Malcolm Swan and Diana Wharmby. The project was directed by Hugh Burkhardt. A large number of teachers and their students have contributed to this work through a continuing process of trialling and observation in their classrooms. We are grateful to them all for their help and for their comments. Among the teachers to whom we are particularly indebted for their contributions at various stages of the project are Paul Davison, Ray Downes, John Edwards, Harry Gordon, Peter Jones, Sue Marshall, Glenda Taylor, Shirley Thompson and Trevor Williamson.
