A Word from Pastor Tom….. Can you believe that Summer is here and School is almost out? Where has all the time gone? Most people think that summer brings a slower pace and a relaxed atmosphere. It is not quite the same today as it was say, 50 years ago. Back then when I was a teenager, we spent most of our summer days doing “fun” activities. Picnics were common place and Little League ball games were the main event for the entire community. We went to Vacation Bible School (2 weeks) at our church and then maybe at the Baptist Church down the street or the Presbyterian church around the corner. The only camps we had were for those kids in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. The High School would have football practice that started two weeks before school, but we didn’t know what “Band Camp” or “Cheerleading Camp” were. Now our children have all the camps for Rev. Tom Rives sports, music, dance, cheerleading and many of them have summer jobs to put in Pastor the middle of the schedule. Mom’s “taxi” seems to always be on the go and we might even get a chance to wave at our parents/children as we are going in and out. We, at the church, have reduced Vacation Bible School to one week and have it at night to help with scheduling. But we’ve added Children’s Camp, Student Life Camp, July 4th Picnic, Anniversary Dinner and Golf Tournament, and at least one Mission Trip to our schedule. We plan other mission projects, outreach events and have special guests in to share with us. While all of these “Now that is events are great and we hope that you participate in as many as possible, I want to encourage you to plan time with your family this summer. I’m not talking about a GOD thing” time that the church or someone else has planned for you and your family to participate in. I’m talking about making time, in all the schedules within your household, to do things with just your family. This past week, while attending a Pastor’s Retreat, I had the opportunity to pre-view the movie Courageous, the latest movie from Sherwood Pictures. This is their fourth movie following Flywheel, , and Fireproof. I believe it is the best one yet. I do not want to give away the outcome but I will share that this movie is about the role and responsibility of men as it relates to their family. It is both humorous and heart wrenching. We are planning on purchasing a block of tickets for the opening weekend when the movie premieres in theaters September 30th. In the next two months you will have a chance to purchase some of those tickets. We are also planning some special Bible studies that will serve as either a lead in or follow-up to this movie. I have been concerned about our scheduling and how it affects the families here at Carrollwood and God brings this movie before us at a Pastor’s Retreat. Now that is a GOD thing!!!

We’re all devoted to something. Just look at where you spend your time, what you talk most about or who consumes your thoughts, and you’ll begin to get a pretty good idea of where your devotion lies. For far too many of us, it doesn’t seem to be with God. So, what does it take to be a fully committed disciple? How do we develop into dedicated and faithful followers of Jesus? Who can we turn to in order to get some help along the way? At camp this summer we will discover how we can be DEVOTED. Camp is right around the corner. We will be leaving bright and early on Wednesday morning July 27. I am looking forward to this with great anticipation to what God is going to teach us this summer. If you haven’t paid more on your balance please do so. You will be receiving an updated balance shortly showing what you owe for camp for your students. As always if you have any questions please feel free to contact Pastor Justin.
