Preliminary Report on the Reproductive Biology of the Threatened Chisos Mountain Hedgehog Cactus BONNIE B. AMOS and CHRISTOS VASSILIOU Angelo State University, Texas Abstract: The Chisos Mountain hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus chisoensis, Cactaceae) is a narrow endemic restricted to an approximately 100 square mile area in Big Bend National Park, Texas. It was listed as threatened in 1987 as Echinocereus chisoensis var. chisoensis. An investigation of the reproductive biology and pollination ecology conducted in 1999 and 2000 revealed the taxon to be homogamous, self-incompatible, xenogamous, and heavily dependent upon the cactus oligolectic bee, Diadasia rinconis (Anthophoridae) for pollination. Despite infrequent bee visitation, fruit set from open pollination is high and fruits produce large numbers of seeds. Predation in 2002, probably from rodents as a result of severe drought conditions, was severe on plants, flower buds, and fruits. It has got several therapeutic uses: haemostatic, antidiarrhetic, antiulcer, antimicrobial, antiviral, wound healing, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, etc. Besides these medicinal applica- tions, it is used as a coloring material, varnish and also has got applications in folk magic. These red saps and resins are derived from a number of disparate taxa. Despite its wide uses, little research has been done to know about its true source, quality control and clinical applications. In this review, we have tried to overview different sources of Dragon’s blood, its source wise chemical constituents and therapeutic uses. The work was conducted through a randomized complete block scheme adapting a factorial of 4 × 3, being the factors types of stakes (apical with leaves, apical without leaves, medium and basal) and substrates (sand, sand + Aserrin (1:1) and Aserrin (100%) at the rate of 10 stakes per repetition totaling 360 stakes throughout the experiment. -

OVERVIEW FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION-APPROVED INDICATIONS Mytesi (crofelemer) is indicated for symptomatic relief of non-infectious diarrhea in adult patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) on anti-retroviral therapy. Mytesi (crofelemer) is an anti-diarrheal and is the first drug indicated for the treatment of diarrhea in patients with HIV/AIDS. It is also the second approved botanical product. Mytesi (crofelemer) is extracted from the sap of the Croton lechleri plant. Several studies have found that patients with HIV experience diarrhea at a higher rate than other populations. The management of idiopathic, noninfectious diarrhea, associated with HIV or protease inhibitor use has generally been nonspecific. Commonly used therapies include anti-motility agents (e.g., loperamide, diphenoxylate/atropine, opioids), adsorbents (e.g., bismuth subsalicylate), bulk- forming fiber supplements, calcium supplements, and at times, pancrelipase or octreotide. -
