POL MENU ▼ T he shadow of Chornobyl Tweet Share The transformation of agriculture in Ukraine: From collective farms to agroholdings OSW COMMENTARY | 2014-02-07 | In recent years, Ukraine’s agriculture has been consistently improving and has been the only part of the country’s economy to buck the recession. According to preliminary estimates, in 2013 agricultural production increased by 13.7% - in contrast to a 4.7% decline in the industrial sector. According to official statistics, Ukraine’s industrial production was up 40% in the final months of 2013 when compared to the same period of 2012. This translated into an unexpected gain in fourth-quarter GDP growth (+3.7%) and prevented an annual drop in GDP. Crop production, and particularly the production of grain, hit a record high: in 2013, Ukraine produced 63 million tonnes of grain, outperforming its best ever harvest of 2011 (56.7 million tonnes). The value of Ukraine’s agricultural and food exports increased from US$4.3 billion in 2005 to US$17.9 billion in 2012, and currently accounts for a quarter of Ukraine’s total exports. Economic forecasts suggest that in the current marketing year (July 2013 - June 2014) Ukraine will sell more than 30 million tonnes of grain to foreign markets, making it the world's second biggest grain exporter, after the United States. Ukraine’s government hopes that the growing agricultural production and booming exports will help the country overcome the recession which has been ongoing since mid-2012, and that the sector will become a driving force for sustained economic growth. -

O҂O OorlogIsGeenOplossing.nl Ukraine between East and West Report for the NO campaign in the Dutch Referendum on the EU-Ukrainian Association Agreement, 6 April 2016 Kees van der Pijl, Fellow, Centre for Global Political Economy, Professor Emeritus, School of Global Studies, University of Sussex February 2016 Centrum voor Geopolitiek Lauwerecht 33, 3515GN Utrecht Preface In November 2008 the author along with Ivan Eland, Director of the Center for Peace and Liberty at the Independent Institute, Oakland (Cal.), a specialist in defence and international security matters; Eamonn Fingleton, writer and journalist specialising in Asian affairs and based in Japan; Ronnie Lipschutz, Professor of Politics at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and Nikolai Petro, Professor of Politics at the University of Rhode Island specialising in Russian and Ukrainian affairs, attended a series of events in Kiev at the invitation of the Ukrainian Forum to develop a vision for the future of Ukraine. During several days we attended a conference on the topic and a televised round table (on 5Kanal, the channel owned by the current president, Petro Poroshenko). The author also gave a public lecture in the Diplomatic Academy (Shevchenko University) as well as an interview to 5Kanal. The Ukrainian Forum at the time was patronized by the second president of Ukraine after its independence, Leonid A. Kuchma, but also included younger people who had been involved in progressive politics during the Soviet Perestroika period. It was they who had in fact been instrumental in selecting the participants from abroad for the 2008 event. Little did we know then that in five years’ time, the Kiev we visited would be engulfed by a popular movement against oligarchic rule, provoked by the decision of then-president Viktor Yanukovych not to sign the EU Association Agreement. -

Corporate governance in Ukraine Passing go October 2011 Brad Wells | +380 44 391 5577 | [email protected] Corporate Governance in Ukraine October 2011 Overview Today’s market for new equity offerings is downright discriminative, far removed from the heyday of Ukrainian placements when all that was needed was a set checklist (financial reports - check, prospectus - check, road show - check) – and a pulse - check – to come back with suitcases of cash. Investors’ demands today have resulted in fewer businesses surviving the heightened scrutiny and accepting challenging valuations. Those, as in the classic board game Monopoly, that are passing go, succeeding in tapping the market and collecting their $200 (or rather, substantially more) must be fluent in investor- speak and fervent corporate governance crusaders. With this background in mind, we return to the corporate governance scene in Ukraine, which we reviewed pre-crisis in 2008 and 2007. We resurrect our tool for measuring intangible notions like respect for minority shareholders, agency risks and corporate reputation in order to help institutional investors better understand the risks entailed in investing in Ukrainian companies. The field today is still striking in its diversity, with fresh faces setting the gold standard and adopting listing homes in Warsaw and London on one end, and pocket Oligarch-controlled assets and unwitting companies skupka-ed into the market seemingly eons ago on the other. In Part I, we test 114 public Ukrainian companies on 10 criteria that we believe embody effective corporate governance practices to see which ones excel ...and which ones struggle. In Part II, we delve into the world of corporate ownership to answer the question – does ownership matter from a governance perspective? Hint – yes!
