Tectonics Festival New York Friday May 23Th Sunday May 25Th, 2014 22 Boerum Place Brooklyn, NY 11201 7183300313 issueprojectroom.org Media Contact: Eve Essex [email protected] Tectonics Festival New York Friday May 23th Sunday May 25th, 2014 The inaugural US iteration of Iceland’s acclaimed Tectonics festival comes to New York in four events at ISSUE Project Room May 23rd through May 25th. A copresentation of Tectonics and ISSUE, Tectonics Festival New York presents a rich program of new composition, improvisation and unique crossgenre collaborations exploring iconic voices in experimental composition. Founded in Reykjavík in 2012 by Ilan Volkov, Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, Tectonics Festival takes the quest for a radical classical music as its starting point. The series opens on Friday May 23rd at 7pm with a special presentation of Alvin Lucier’s Criss Cross, featuring two pillars of experimental rock: Stephen O’Malley, a doommetal legend of Sunn O)))) fame, and the celebrated guitarist, composer and multiinstrumentalist Oren Ambarchi. Originally premiered at Tectonics Glasgow in May 2013 and recently staged at Louisville’s Big Ears Festival, this is the duo’s first NY appearance. Jessika Kenney, a composer and vocalist who draws on South East Asian and Persian vocal traditions— as well as participating in experimental and metal groups including Sunn 0)))— performs solo and also joins O’Malley and Ambarchi in the World Premiere of a newly commissioned work for ensemble by Eyvind Kang. Kenney also performs two works by Italian avantgardist Giacinto Scelsi, one in a duo with Kang on viola. An ensemble of O’Malley, Ambarchi, Eli Keszler & Alan Zimmerman perform South Pole by Iancu Dumitrescu, a pioneering Romanian composer still not known enough. Canadian sound artist Crys Cole performs solo, drawing subtle and imperfect sounds from simple, meditative gestures. The second day of the festival turns attention to Harley Gaber, a complex American composer, filmmaker, artist, and tennis player. Saturday May 24th at 8pm, Gaber’s monumental work The Winds Rise in the North is performed by a quintet including extraordinary string players Conrad Harris, Pauline Kim, Esther Noh, Alex Waterman and Erin Wight. A pillar of American minimalism, the near100 minute work is scored in four sections with amplified instruments largely performed sul ponticello (on or near the bridge of the instruments), yielding rich harmonic combinations and overtones. Prior to this performance, Saturday May 24th at 6pm, a panel on the artist’s life and works is moderated by composer Eric Richards, with guests Paul Paccione, Ned Sublette and Bill Hellerman. Sunday May 25th at 7pm, a diverse program highlights works by Eric Richards, littleknown but tremendously influential American avantgarde composer who came of age in the pervasively interdisciplinary counterculture of the 1960s. Two of Richard’s works are performed by percussionist Alan Zimmerman. Alvin Lucier also returns for this final event of the festival, performing two works with pianist Jenny Lin. Baritone Jeffrey Gavettt, a premier vocalist of contemporary music, performs works by Lucier, Scelsi and two experimentalists of a younger generation— Aaron Cassidy and Evan Johnson. The festival closes with a solo set by Hildur Ingveldardóttir Guðnadóttir, an acclaimed Icelandic cellist at the forefront of experimental rock, best known for her collaborations with múm and Pan Sonic. With cello, voice and software manipulation, Guðnadóttir draws a broad spectrum of sounds from her instrument, ranging from intimate simplicity to huge soundscapes. 22 Boerum Place Brooklyn, NY 11201 7183300313 issueprojectroom.org Media Contact: Eve Essex [email protected] The New York edition of Tectonics Festival at ISSUE Project Room follows 2014 editions of the festival around the world— in Reykjavik with Iceland Symphony, Glasgow with BBC Scottish Symphony, Adelaide with Adelaide Symphony, and a final series in June 2014 in TelAviv with the Israeli Contemporary Players. All programs take place at ISSUE Project Room, 22 Boerum Place in Downtown Brooklyn.

Ilan Volkov Conductor Israeli conductor Ilan Volkov is a blur of manic energy, a font of curiosity and advocacy deftly navigating the bureaucratic layers of classical music institutions in order to interrupt the status quo from within. National Sawdust Log Since his prodigious breakthrough as Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the age of 19, Ilan Volkov has matured into a versatile conductor whose interpretations of familiar repertoire are sought after internationally. He enjoys a long- standing relationship with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, as Principal Conductor from 2003 and Principal Guest Conductor since 2009. A musical omnivore, Volkov also serves as a dynamic figurehead of the international contemporary music scene. He launched the Tectonics Festival in 2012, which has since become one of the world’s most diverse and acclaimed celebrations of new music, with festivals in Adelaide, Oslo, New York, Tel Aviv, Krakow, Athens, Glasgow and Reykjavík. In 2020 he co-founded the I&I Foundation with Ilya Gringolts to support the development and performance of new music. Volkov’s repertoire with a variety of ensembles spreads far and wide, and he often appears at the world’s foremost festivals, such as Salzburg, Edinburgh, BBC Proms, Lucerne, Unsound Krakow, Musikprotkoll and Berlin. Between 2011 and 2014 he was Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Contact: Katherine E. Johnson (212) 875-5718; [email protected] Lincoln Center Contact: Eric Gewirtz (212) 875-5049; [email protected] JUNE 2–4, 2016, AT ROSE THEATER AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER: Part of the LINCOLN CENTER–NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC OPERA INITIATIVE CONTACT! at the Biennial: U.S. Stage Premiere of Gerald BARRY’s The Importance of Being Earnest During the NY PHIL BIENNIAL, Ilan Volkov will conduct a chamber orchestra of New York Philharmonic musicians in the U.S. Stage Premiere of Gerald Barry’s (Ireland, b. 1952) The Importance of Being Earnest (2010), an operatic take on Oscar Wilde’s comedy, co-presented with Lincoln Center’s Great Performers as part of CONTACT!, the Philharmonic’s new-music series, at Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Gerald Barry’s libretto and score for chamber orchestra enhance the ridiculous situations of Oscar Wilde’s comedy, reflecting what Barry calls the play’s “ruthless ecstasy.” For instance, Gerald Barry casts Lady Bracknell as a bass and presents familiar tunes in musically unexpected, untraditional ways, such as an atonal version of “Auld lang syne” and Lady Bracknell’s rendition of “Ode to Joy.” The recording of the work on NMC received a 2016 Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Gerald Barry studied with Stockhausen and Kagel in the 1970s, developing a distinct style comprising intense, edgy, and humorous sound worlds. This production was originally presented at London’s Royal Opera House in June 2013; the director, Ramin Gray, and many of the cast members from this staging will reassemble for the NY PHIL BIENNIAL/Great Performers engagement, all in their Philharmonic debuts: bass Simon Wilding as Lane/Merriman, baritone Benedict Nelson as Algernon Moncrieff, tenor Paul Curievici as John Worthing, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Marshall as Gwendolen Fairfax, bass Alan Ewing as Lady Bracknell, contralto Hilary Summers as Miss Prism, soprano Claudia Boyle as Cecily Cardew, and Kevin West as The Rev.

RUSSIAN, SOVIET & POST-SOVIET CONCERTOS A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) Born in Oranienbaum, near St. Petersburg. He began piano, harmony and counterpoint lessons at age 9, and, after a gap of a decade, studied theory with Fyodor Akimenko and Vasily Kalafati and then had private composition lessons with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov over the course of several years. He went on to become one of the greatest composers of the 20th century without ever having been enrolled in any conservatory or receiving any kind of musical degree. His success as a composer began early with the ballets he wrote for Sergei Diaghilev and continued for the rest of his life. He left Russia for Switzerland in 1914, moved on to France in 1920 and then to the United States at the outbreak of World War II in 1939. He composed prolifically throughout his long life and there were hardly any genres of music that he did not tackle. In addition, he committed practically everything he wrote to recordings that he, or his assistant, Robert Craft, conducted personally. • 13 International Pharos Chamber Music Festival
Press Release 13th International Pharos Chamber Music Festival 21 May – 1 June 2013 “From Aphrodite's hill-top Sanctuary to an idyllic olive grove, the stunning locations of the Pharos Chamber Music Festival attract top musicians year after year” BBC Music Magazine, March 2012 The International Pharos Chamber Music Festival is being organized again this year, despite the recent shortcomings in Cyprus. The Festival has established itself as the most important annual classical music event on the island, and has gained international reputation for its quality concerts and magnificent settings. Guided by a visionary spirit and dedicated to artistic excellence and innovation, the Festival attracts over 2.000 visitors every year. It also maintains a strong tradition of community service, with educational concerts organized for students of public schools and a number of master-classes for young instrumentalists. Organized between 21 May and 1 June 2013, the 13th International Pharos Chamber Music Festival welcomes to Cyprus some of the most remarkable artists on the international music scene, for eight concerts in three unique venues in Cyprus: the notable Royal Manor House in the ancient village of Kouklia, birthplace of goddess Aphrodite; The Shoe Factory, a contemporary recital venue situated in Ermou Street near the buffer zone in Nicosia; The Olive Grove, a world-class, open- air venue surrounded by the idyllic forest of Delikipos. This year’s Festival would not have been made possible if it were not for the kindness of the participating artists, who expressed their wish to show solidarity with the people of Cyprus by performing for a very small symbolic fee, in order to enable the Foundation to reduce the price of the tickets even more.

No conductor is more closely associated with the music of Berlioz than Sir Colin Davis, who leads the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in the composer’s huge operatic masterpiece. An all-star cast of singers includes renowned heroic tenor Ben Heppner as Aeneas, with Michelle DeYoung as Dido and Petra Lang as Cassandra. This will be a great opportunity to hear Davis, who has led the Berlioz revival of recent decades, bring his unique authority to a work with which he is closely associated – his pioneering complete staging of The Trojans at Covent Garden and subsequent recording in the late 1960s are landmarks in the history of opera performance. Other full-scale vocal works by Berlioz include Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducting the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique and Monteverdi Choir in a period-instrument performance of The Childhood of Christ (Prom 14, Monday 28 July) and Sir Roger Norrington and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR) in a rare performance of Benvenuto Cellini. Berlioz’s early opera on the life and loves of the Renaissance artist has Bruce Ford, Laura Claycomb, Monica Groop and Christopher Maltman leading a fine cast of singers (Prom 39, Sunday 17 August).
