SCRIPTURE READING PLAN for 5778 (2017-2018) This Plan Takes the Torah and Haftarah Cycle As the Foundation for Reading Entire Bible SCRIPTURE READING PLAN FOR 5778 (2017-2018) This plan takes the Torah and Haftarah cycle as the foundation for reading entire Bible. Torah and Haftarah readings follow the one-year Jewish and Messianic divisions, with Torah readings divided into daily portions and Haftarah readings occurring on Shabbat. (Note that chapter and verse designations are according to the Christian rather than Jewish numbering.) Torah and Haftarah readings for the Moedim (Feasts of the Lord) appear in italics. Readings for the rest of the Tanakh (Old Testament) and Apostolic Writings (New Testament) proceed through a daily plan that covers all of those Scriptures over the course of the year. The first weekly readings for 5778 correspond to the final weekly readings of the previous cycle, which is why this plan begins with the last chapters of both the Tanakh and Apostolic Writings. Yates IMOTHY POLK HAS NOTED, “Nothing distinguishes the book of Jeremiah from earlier works of prophecy quite so much as T the attention it devotes to the person of the prophet and the prominence it accords the prophetic ‘I’, and few things receive more scholarly comment.”1 More than simply providing a biographical or psychological portrait of the prophet, the book presents Jeremiah as a theological symbol who embodies in his person the word of Yahweh and the office of prophet.2 In fact the figure of Jeremiah is so central that a theology of the book of Jeremiah “cannot be for- mulated without taking into account the person of the prophet, as the book presents him.”3 The purpose of this article is to explore how intertextual con- nections to other portions of the Bible inform a deeper understand- ing of the portrayal of Jeremiah the prophet and his theological significance in the book of Jeremiah.

    THROUGH THE BIBLE STUDY JEREMIAH 11-12 In a Reader's Digest article, aimed at young career-oriented people, it was suggested that a person finds the highest chances of success in life… "by engaging in work you most enjoy doing, and which gives fullest expression to your abilities and personality…” If Jeremiah had heeded that nugget of advice he would’ve never been a prophet - God's mouthpiece! Jeremiah's work was anything but enjoyable! He preached a message of repentance to an obstinate bunch! God gave him the task of presiding over the judgment of His backslidden people, Judah. Jeremiah tried and cried to reach these people. He sacrificed his freedoms, his position, his land, his possessions, his comforts. He even waived his right to marry and have a family. Yet his sacrifices won him nothing but hostility and hardship. “Prophet” was not exactly that job where he enjoyed expressing himself. "1 If Jeremiah had any sense of fulfillment it came not from his work, but from God’s Word. In 15:16 He’ll say, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your Word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.” Jeremiah was a lone voice. He confronted and stood alone against both political and priestly establishments! In his 40 years of ministry he never won a single convert. From a career- oriented perspective Jeremiah was an utter, miserable failure! Yet God appraises success differently than we do!     Sunday Sermon Mission Impossible Jeremiah 12:1-17 March 8, 2020 “That’s Not Fair” Introduction: Throughout the Bible we find situations where our faith hits a roadblock and evil seems to prevail. This is especially true when it appears as if God is allowing evil people to get away with their sin. Habakkuk, an early contemporary of Jeremiah, was terribly troubled because Judah seemed to be getting away with sin; how much more upset he becomes where he thinks Babylon, a pagan nation, is getting away with sin as well! Habakkuk becomes confused by the apparent conflict between what he knew to be true about God and what he sees around him in the world. It just doesn’t seem to add up, and he lets God know about it. In the process, he learns a view of God that is true but not always popular; he begins to look at his circumstances from the framework of God’s character rather than at God’s character from the context of his circumstances. As we continue this morning in the book of Jeremiah, we find that he struggled with the same issues as his prophet friend. And I think if we’re all honest, we struggle at times with it as well. Jeremiah 12-14 finds that Judah was facing impending judgement, the land was suffering under a tremendous drought (14:1-6) and Jeremiah was being plotted against from his hometown; even his own brethren (6)! It was certainly a dark time and he did what many of us do…we ask why? I.

  • Jeremiah Chapter 11
    Jeremiah Chapter 11 Verses 1-9: This is an extended dialogue between Jeremiah and the Lord about the people of God and their failure to once again keep the covenant their ancestors had accepted during the Exodus from “Egypt”. That agreement had bound both God and Israel with certain promises and consequences. What was about to befall the nation was because Israel did not uphold its part of the covenant. Jeremiah 11:1 "The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying," Jeremiah’s messages (in chapters 11-13), will reveal Judah’s false loyalties. They have been unfaithful to the covenant of the Lord (11:1 – 17), and, accordingly, must suffer the course of their infidelity (11:18 - 12:17). Judah’s corruption (13:1-11), had led them to an inordinate pride that will suffer humiliation (13:12-27). Jeremiah 11:2 "Hear ye the words of this covenant, and speak unto the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem;" “This covenant”: The reference is to God’s covenant, summarized (in verses 3-5), which promised curses for disobeying and blessings for obeying (compare Deut. 27:26 – 28:68). To read a more detailed account of the covenant spoken of, read all of (2 Kings Chapter 23). This will also go into detail about the sins of the people. (Verse 2), is spoken to Jeremiah. Jeremiah is to first hear from God and then speak to the men of Judah. This was not to be spoken to just those who held high positions but to all inhabitants.
