Sm, I HAVE the honor to submit to you a Report on the working of the Survey Department for the year ending June the 30th, 1891. Consequent on the general development of the country, the current work of the office has steadily increased during the year, and the powers of the small staff have been severely strained to satisfy the demands made upon it. This Report will indicate how difficult it is to maintain an efficient staff under existing circumstances; that we have not yet recovered from the reductions previously made ; and that additional assistance is required to prevent the work from falling into serious arrears. CROWN LANDS AcT, 1890. · The consolidated Crown Lands Act passed last Session is a measure of the vei·y greatest importance to the country, and one that has received considerable attention in one form or another ever since the Land Bill of 1883 was introduced to Parliament. A short Land Act was passed each year since 1885, with the result that there were no fewer than twelve Acts to be studied before a stranger could acquire a competent knowledge of our Land Laws. If, therefore, for no other reason than that of consolidation, the Bill would have been hailed with satis­ faction. It, however, aims at the important principle of encouraging agricultural settlement in Mining Districts.

We wish to voice the following concerns and comments that we have relating to the above submission requesting the re-zoning of part of Lot 1 Channel Highway, Cygnet (CT: 167891/1) and other property as set out in the submission and the issuing of planning permission to the owner/s of this land for the subdivision of the land into 61 parcels designed to be use for residential building construction, together with additional road lots etc. # It is the size of this proposed residential development and its potential impact on a rural community that presents an immediate concern. # Whilst it is recognized that development of towns and their rural surrounds is inevitable, and often desirable, the context in which they occur needs to be carefully considered. # The rural township of Cygnet has become an increasingly desirable location in which to live for many Tasmanians, interstate arrivals and to a lesser extent new arrivals into Australia from overseas. The suggested number of new arrivals wanting to move into Cygnet has been quantified by the SGS reports.

    VISITING RESERVES Ninepin Point MARINE RESERVE Ninepin Point Marine Reserve protects an unusual marine environment. Here the 36 kms saltwater is overlain by tannin- to Hobart Cygnet Woodbridge rich freshwater from the 0 2 4 Kms nearby Huon River. The tea- coloured tannin layer restricts Launceston St Helens N light penetration to the top few metres. This restricts light- Hobart loving brown and green algae C H A N N E L to the very shallowest water.
