The Balloon 360° Stage was born three years ago as a result of an architecture competition, and it provides a unique setting for intimate musical experiences. The round stage is covered by a huge pressurised ball – effectively a balloon. This year the stage will be renewed with a massive video implementation by technology services specialists Bright Finland and the stage is named as Bright Balloon 360°, after the company. The foreign acts in the Bright Balloon 360° lineup includes young and promising Swedish soul singer Seinabo Sey and U.S.-based newcomer Natalie Prass, whose debut album was released recently. There is also Forever Pavot rising from the French underground psych scene, and the Norwegian indierockers Kakkmaddafakka, who are known for energetic shows. The lineup includes several African acts such as Islam Chipsy, and its Egyptian folk music with an electronic flavour, as well as Mali-based desert blues band Songhoy Blues whose debut album Music in Exile was produced by Amadou & Mariam producer Antoine Moreau and Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs fame. Local acts include blues rock legend, guitarist and singer-songwriter Dave Lindholm, reggae artist Reino Nordin with a band and several guests, singer-songwriter John McGregor together with the drummer-percussionist Samuli Kosminen and guitarist Jarmo Saari, as well as the Räjäyttäjät band’s Jukka Nousiainen with his Jukka & Jytämimmit set-up. Stepping onto the round stage will also be J. Karjalainen with his one-man Lännen-Jukka show, which will actually be seen twice on Friday. Top Finnish jazz will be represented by the Verneri Pohjola Quartet and the Timo Lassy Band. Pohjola is accompanied by pianist Aki Rissanen, bass player Antti Lötjönen, and drummer Teppo Mäkynen. The Timo Lassy Band’s special guests will include trumpeter Jukka Eskola and the biggest promise of Finnish jazz, vibraphonist Panu Savolainen.

  • Songhoy Blues – Optimisme Biography
Songhoy Blues – Optimisme Biography ‘Songhoy Blues has always been about resistance. We started the group during a civil war, in the face of a music ban, to create something positive out of adversity’ - Aliou Toure, lead singer Sons of Mali. Groundbreaking Artists. Refugees. Virtuosos. Survivors. Rock Stars. Unforgettable & undeniable, Songhoy Blues represent the future of African rock n’ roll. And now, with the upcoming release of their scintillating new album, Optimisme, these blues brothers from Bamako officially announce their arrival and their intention to continue singing, playing & dancing their way into the hearts & minds of music fans everywhere. This 11-song, multi-lingual album is a breakthrough effort, led by the infectious & anthemic lead single, “Worry”, and steeped in deep traditions of classic Malian music & desert blues, fused with an urgent & super-charged sound of now. The album was produced by Matt Sweeney of beloved indie rockers Chavez, who’s worked with a host of celebrated artists including Johnny Cash, Run the Jewels, El-P, Cat Power, Will Oldham & Jake Bugg, and recorded & mixed by Daniel Schlett (The War on Drugs, Modest Mouse, Ghostface Killah) in Brooklyn, NY. Born from civil war & a shared rejection of Sharia law nearly 10 years ago, Songhoy Blues embody a unique & remarkable journey from refugees to budding rock stars. Featured in the 2015 award-winning documentary “They Will Have to Kill Us First” about the plight of musicians in war-torn Mali, these are 4 young men with firsthand knowledge of the violence & vagaries resulting from a country torn by tumult & divided by ideology.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Nick Zinner producerede albummets åbningsnummer ”Soubour”.

Fighting Back with Music | norient.com 30 Sep 2021 04:37:07 Fighting Back with Music by Simon Broughton After the Islamist invasion of Northern Mali in 2012, music was widely banned. In their search for peace and freedom, Malian musicians have been fighting back – with music. A short insight into Mali’s music scenes, inspired by the film It Must Make Peace. → Check all articles of this special → Download PDF with introduction and table of contents In the wider world, the West African country of Mali is known predominantly for one thing. Economically, the principal export is cotton, but it’s music that has really put Mali on the map, thanks to Salif Keita, Oumou Sangaré, Toumani Diabaté, Rokia Traoré and many others. This is why the ongoing events in the North of the country – beginning with a push for Tuareg independence, and leading to an Islamist invasion in 2012 and the banning of music and the destruction of instruments – came as such a shock. And why Malian musicians themselves were (and still are) determined to fight back in the only way they know how: With music. For them, the idea of their country without music is inconceivable. Most significant was Fatoumata Diawara’s «Mali-ko» (Mali Gathering).
