Calitz January 2012 Declaration I, Melisa Koorsse (199201064), hereby declare that the thesis for my qualification to be awarded is my own work and that it has not previously been submitted for assessment or completion of any postgraduate qualification to another University or for another quali- fication. Novice programmers struggle to understand introduc- tory programming concepts and this difficulty of learning to program is contributing to the lack of interest in the field of computer science. Information Technology (IT) learners in South African secondary schools are novice programmers, introduced to introductory programming concepts in the subject which also includes topics on hardware and system software, e-communication, social and ethical issues, spreadsheets and databases. The difficulties faced by IT learners are worsened by the lack of suitably qualified teachers, a saturated learning programme that allocates very little time to the understanding of complex programming concepts and limited class time where practical examples can be implemented with the support of the IT teacher. This research proposes that IT learners could be supported by a programming assistance tool (PAT).

ANDREW CARNEGIE FOUNDER, CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY Welcome To the graduates, families and friends of the Carnegie Mellon Class of 2019: Welcome to Carnegie Mellon University’s 122nd Commencement Ceremony. Today, we celebrate the achievements of the CMU Class of 2019. Since arriving on campus, these students have been immersed in work that matters — in boundary-crossing education and research, outstanding creativity and performance, and community service and engagement. Bound by a core set of values that includes integrity, inclusion, collaboration and empathy, these remarkable graduates have changed this campus for the better, and will change the world. We are especially grateful to the families and friends of the graduates who have come here today to celebrate with us. Graduation from a demanding academic institution like Carnegie Mellon is a team effort: these students could not have succeeded without your steadfast love and support over the years. Today, you share in their well-deserved accomplishments. As one chapter of their lives closes, another begins. Today, the Class of 2019 is joining a worldwide community of more than 112,000 alumni who have experienced the power of a CMU education to make a difference in the world. Graduates: I encourage you to take advantage of this network and remember to share your accumulating knowledge and experiences with the students who follow in your footsteps. On behalf of the entire Carnegie Mellon community, I wish the Class of 2019 great success, fulfillment and happiness in the years ahead.

Studi Analisis Tools Pembelajaran Berbasis Game dalam Upaya Peningkatan Kompetensi Keahlian Pemrograman Arik Kurniawati Program Studi Teknik Informatika Fakultas Teknik Universitas Trunojoyo Jl. Kata kunci: teknologi infomasi dan komunikasi, pembelajaran, game based learning, tools Abstracts Programming algorithms and data structures is a subject which is vital in teaching majors based on information and communication technology. In practice, many students who find difficulty in understanding the basic principles of programming. One modern approach is proposed to overcome this problem is to use the game-based learning. It’s just that the media has not been used in the Department of Informatics University Trunojoyo. This study aims to conduct comparative analysis of studies using a new medium for learning courses programming and data structure algorithm by using game-based learning tools that already exist.

OFFICE This is a true Carnegie Mellon tradition where undergraduate research takes center stage, and where the entire campus gathers at the Cohon University Center to celebrate the creativity, inventiveness, and originality of our students, their mentors, and the collaborations between them. The abstracts in this booklet are a good place to begin as you plan your day and decide whatMEETING you want to see and hear. These projects come alive in a variety of ways: in the poster displays in the hallways as well as in Rangos Ballroom; in the oral presentations in the meeting rooms on the second floor; the art installations in the first floor Connan room; and performances/films in McConomy Auditorium. Please make sure that you visit Wiegand Gym where new additions to our Meeting of the Minds—the IDEATE program and a project-based Biomedical Engineering project—will be wowing you with their new inventions and innovations. Whatever you decide to see and hear—whether it is truly a topicOF of burning intellectual interest THE to you, or perhaps a friend’s presentation, you will undoubtedly learn something new. There are two important times to keep in mind. At 2:30 pm, Provost Farnam Jahanian will deliver a brief talk in the Kirr Commons area on the first floor. We will also hold a drawing of some items during this time—plus, there will be plenty of food.

  • The Alice Suite
The Alice Suite Wanda Dann Don Slater Steve Cooper Computer Science Department Computer Science Department Computer Science Department Carnegie Mellon University Carnegie Mellon University Stanford University Pittsburgh, PA 15213 Pittsburgh, PA 15213 Stanford, CA 94305 1-412-268-9959 1-412-268-4370 1-650-723-9798 [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Abstract This paper presents the chronology of the development of the Alice software tool and its evolution into a suite of tools for a wide range of curricular goals. This paper will also help instructors determine the best component of the Alice suite to use in their particular classroom setting. Over the last decade, the Alice Project has emerged as a pioneer and a leading innovator in providing a software tool for teaching and learning problem solving and fundamental concepts of computer programming. Alice was originally created in the early 1990’s as a rapid prototyping tool for creating animations in virtual reality. Virtual reality is a computer-based simulation where the user wears a special set of goggles and gloves, and uses a 3D controller to move through and interact with a world that only exists in the user’s perception. The original Alice 3D animation software (we might refer to it as Alice 1) was developed by a research and development team directed by Dr. Randy Pausch, starting at the University of Virginia and continued at Carnegie Mellon University. Alice was used at Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center in Building Virtual Worlds, a first course for graduate students who are preparing for a career in the interactive media industry (gaming and animation).
