Hofstetter2 9 1 Assistant Director-Research, USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station, Asheville, NC, 28804 2Assistant Professor, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-5018 Abstract Bark beetles are among the most ecologically and economically influential organisms in forest ecosystems worldwide. These important organisms are consistently associated in complex symbioses with fungi. Despite this, little is known of the net impacts of the fungi on their vectors, and mites are often completely overlooked. In this chapter, we will describe interactions involving the southern pine beetle (SPB), among the most economically damaging of North American forest insects. We examine SPB interactions with mites, fungi, and other microbes, following the natural temporal progression from beetle attack to offspring emergence from trees. Associations with fungi are universal within bark beetles. Many beetle species possess specialized structures, termed mycangia, for the transport of fungi. The SPB consistently carries three main Keywords fungi and numerous mites into the trees it attacks. Oise amber has eight species, Baltic amber has 118 species, and Rovno amber has 16 species. Nine new genera and 18 new species are described from Baltic amber. Four new synonyms are noted: Palaeometrioxena Legalov, 2012, syn. nov. is synonymous with Archimetrioxena Voss, 1953; Paleopissodes weigangae Ulke, 1947, syn. nov. is synonymous with Electrotribus theryi Hustache, 1942; Electrotribus erectosquamata Rheinheimer, 2007, syn. nov. is synonymous with Succinostyphlus mroczkowskii Kuska, 1996; Protonaupactus Zherikhin, 1971, syn. nov. is synonymous with Paonaupactus Voss, 1953. Keys for Eocene amber Curculionoidea are given. There are the first records of Aedemonini and Camarotini, and genera Limalophus and Cenocephalus in Baltic amber. SHAW &HOWARD MENDEL 1National Museums of Scotland, Chambers Street, Edinburgh EH1 1JF 2Natural History Museum (Life Sciences), Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD ABSTRACT Lestricus secalis (L.) was inadvertently listed as British on the basis of an old speculation but, as there was neither firm evidence nor the existence of any specimen, it was deleted from the British list by Shaw & Huddleston (1991). However, it was suggested by Shaw (1999) that the species might be found in the native pinewoods of Scotland, and now its presence there can be confirmed. Illustrated notes on its morphology and the means to identify it are given. INTRODUCTION As discussed by Shaw (1999), there are three European species of the small braconid subfamily Cenocoeliinae, which are parasitoids of beetle larvae. Rearing records for all three show their hosts to be small Cerambycidae that feed in dead twigs and small branches. Two British species, Cenocoelius analis (Nees) and Cenocoelius aartseni (van Achterberg), are known from southern England and can be locally common, parasitizing cerambycids associated with broadleaved trees (Shaw, Fig. 1. The third European species, Lestricus secalis (L.), is associated with conifers and largely northern in distribution (though recently found in Spain: Obrego´n& Shaw, in press). Zimmerman BISHOP MUSEUM, HONOLULU Abstract: Ten species of Rhynchophorinae are recorded from southeastern Polynesia, including two new species of Dryophthorus from Rapa. Excepting the latter, all the spe cies have been introduced into the area and most are of economic importance. Keys to adults and larvae, notes on biologies, new distributional data and illustrations are pre sented. This is a combined Pacific Entomological Survey (1928-1933) and Mangarevan Expedi tion (1934) report. I had hoped to publish the account soon after my return from the 1934 expedition to southeastern Polynesia, but its preparation has been long delayed be cause of my pre-occupation with other duties. With the exception of two new endemic species of Dryophthorus, described herein, all of the Rhynchophorinae found in southeastern Polynesia (Polynesia south of Hawaii and east of Samoa; see fig. 1) have been introduced through the agencies of man. The most easterly locality where endemic typical rhynchophorids are known to occur in the mid- Pacific is Samoa where there are endemic species of Diathetes. (I consider the Dryoph- thorini and certain other groups to be atypical Rhynchophorinae). West of Samoa the subfamily becomes increasingly rich and diversified. There are multitudes of genera and species from Papua to India, and it is in the Indo-Pacific where the subfamily is most abundant. Figure 2 demonstrates the comparative faunistic developments of the typical rhynchophorids. K1P 6P4, CANADA;[email protected] 3Department of Recent Invertebrates, Virginia Museum of Natural History, 21 Starling Avenue, Martinsville, Virginia 24112; [email protected] ABSTRACT: One-hundred thirty-five taxa (130 identified to species), in at least 97 genera, of weevils (superfamily Curculionoidea) were documented during a 21-year field survey (1998–2018) of the George Washington Memorial Parkway national park site that spans parts of Fairfax and Arlington Counties in Virginia. Twenty-three species documented from the parkway are first records for the state. Of the nine capture methods used during the survey, Malaise traps were the most successful. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. Relative abundance is noted for each species based on the number of captures. Sixteen species adventive to North America are documented from the parkway, including three species documented for the first time in the state. Range extensions are documented for two species.
