© Copyright 2016 Bridget Langley Written on Running Water: Ovidian Poetics in the Roman Waterscape Bridget Alice Langley A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2016 Reading Committee: Stephen Hinds, Chair Catherine Connors Alain Gowing Kathryn Topper Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Classics University of Washington Abstract Written on Running Water: Ovidian Poetics in the Roman Waterscape Bridget Alice Langley Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Stephen Hinds Classics Written on Running Water: Ovidian Poetics in the Roman Waterscape analyzes the symbolic value of water in Ovid’s poetry and considers how this was affected by the reorganization of the Roman water supply under Augustus. Agrippa and Augustus gained enormous political capital by restructuring and coordinating the city’s hydraulic infrastructure, and they altered the Roman landscape and the cultural significance of water in ways that would profoundly influence the building programmes and self-promotion of later emperors. I show that the abundance and beauty of the city’s new waterscape also affected Ovid’s use of images such as the fountain of inspiration and the locus amoenus, and came to represent the ideal aquatic environment. Taking a broad view of Ovid’s water poetics, I examine his depictions of Roman hydraulic infrastructure, his representations of water systems outside of the city, and the transformative waters of the Metamorphoses which challenge human attempts to control nature. Throughout his oeuvre, Ovid harnesses the power of water to figure his life and his poetic activity. I show that the basis for these images can be found in the newly transformed waterscape of the city of Rome. -

The book of Gods,Goddessess,Heroes and other Characters of Mythology In broad terms mythology is composed of traditional stories about gods, kings, and heroes. Myths often tell about the creation of the world (and about its destruction as well), about the creation of men, and, also, they provide lessons on a moral code by which to live. They were attempts to provide rationale to natural events and to human emotion. Mythological stories generally were passed on orally from generation to succeeding generation. Each tale, embellished and "corrupted" through the re-tellings, was probably a reasoned explanation of the facts as seen by unsophisticated and uneducated eyes. Most scholars today divide the subject into three categories: pure myth (primitive science and primitive religion), heroic saga (primitive history), and folklore (fictional stories). TELA MONUMENTALIA: OVID, AUGUSTUS, AND THE ROMAN CITYSCAPE IN ARS AMATORIA I.67-176 by STEVEN ROBERT TURNER, JR. (Under the Direction of JAMES C. ANDERSON, JR.) ABSTRACT The Ars Amatoria stood in direct contradiction to Augustan moral legislation; Ovid discussed how to pursue the very sorts of liaisons that Augustus sought to ban with the lex Iulia de Adulteriis Coercendis and the lex Iulia de Maritandis Ordinibus of 18 B.C.E. In one section of the poem’s first book, Ovid more subtly employed various buildings associated with the Julian gens in providing the settings for the pursuit of such relationships. Thus, he used these symbols of Augustan authority as weapons, as it were, in an ad hominem attack against the princeps, suggesting each of them as a place where only the authority of love prevailed. This study will identify the Augustan structures Ovid named (and one he seemingly omitted) as loci amoris and will analyze the literary, political, and erotic reasons for their inclusion or apparent omission in his didactic poem.
