    Dodgers and Giants Move to the West: Causes and Effects An Honors Thesis (HONRS 499) By Nick Tabacca Dr. Tony Edmonds Ball State University Muncie, Indiana May 2004 May 8, 2004 Abstract The history of baseball in the United States during the twentieth century in many ways mirrors the history of our nation in general. When the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants left New York for California in 1957, it had very interesting repercussions for New York. The vacancy left by these two storied baseball franchises only spurred on the reason why they left. Urban decay and an exodus of middle class baseball fans from the city, along with the increasing popularity of television, were the underlying causes of the Giants' and Dodgers' departure. In the end, especially in the case of Brooklyn, which was very attached to its team, these processes of urban decay and exodus were only sped up when professional baseball was no longer a uniting force in a very diverse area. New York's urban demographic could no longer support three baseball teams, and California was an excellent option for the Dodger and Giant owners. It offered large cities that were hungry for major league baseball, so hungry that they would meet the requirements that Giants' and Dodgers' owners Horace Stoneham and Walter O'Malley had asked for in New York. These included condemnation of land for new stadium sites and some city government subsidization for the Giants in actually building the stadium. Overall, this research shows the very real impact that sports has on its city and the impact a city has on its sports.

Specifically, this study attempts to establish a logical expansion and adaptation of Bale’s Four-Stage Ideal-type on the Evolution of the Modern English Soccer Stadium appropriate for the history of professional baseball and football and that predicts future changes in American sport facilities. In essence, it is the author’s intention to provide a more coherent and comprehensive account of the evolving professional baseball and football sport facility and where it appears to be headed. This investigation concludes eight stages exist concerning the evolution of the professional baseball and football sport facility. Stages one through four primarily appeared before the beginning of the 20th century and existed as temporary structures which were small and cheaply built. Stages five and six materialize as the first permanent professional baseball and football facilities. Stage seven surfaces as a multi-purpose facility which attempted to accommodate both professional football and baseball equally.

    SUMMER OF 1959 – AL SCHALLAU’S TRIP TO CALIFORNIA In the summer of 1959, I was 17 years old and living in Iowa City, Iowa. I had completed my junior year of high school at City High. My biggest desire was to take a Greyhound bus trip by myself to California in August, 1959. For the first six months of 1959, I spent many hours at the University of Iowa Library studying college catalogs of universities and junior colleges in California. I wrote to many California colleges requesting their college catalogs, and I received about 20. I hated, hated, hated the cold winter weather in Iowa. Particularly, I detested digging my car and my dad’s car out of six-foot snow drifts in below zero temperatures. Some mornings our cars would not start because of cold temperatures that ranged downward to 20 below zero. The very strong winds in sub-zero weather made life miserable in the winter. The first three months of 1959 were really brutal. The Iowa High School Boys State Basketball tournament in the second week of March, was postponed two days because the snow drifts left the highways of Iowa and the streets of Des Moines unpassable. I thought and stated to anyone who would listen, “I am not going to tolerate this weather for the rest of my life. I am going to live in California.” I had been told that it was 84 degrees in Los Angeles on Christmas Day. I didn’t believe it. So in the first three months of 1959, I checked the DES MOINES REGISTER every day for daily temperatures in other cities.

March 29, 2007 Summer 2007: Solar Energy Hits the Major League The AT&T Park will be first Major League Baseball stadium to sport a photovoltaic solar system when completed in July. by Sara Parker, Staff Writer San Francisco, California [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Although modest in terms of its size, the logistics of designing and overseeing a potential 120-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) solar array for a Major League Baseball (MLB) stadium are a bit trickier than one might think. First there's the issue of balancing the need to achieve the proper solar access with the baseball park's unique structure and surfaces -- since situating an array in center field is pretty much out of the question. It doesn't help matters that the stadium is the AT&T Park in San Francisco, which means special design consideration for seismic activity in the area has to be taken into account. Next, custom-fabricated structural steel must be ordered and added to the facility to support the large arrays, scaffolding setup, cranes brought in, and oh, by the way, don't forget there's a ballgame on Tuesday. "It's quite a challenge logistically even though by today's standards it's still a modest-sized array," said Steven J. Strong, a noted solar advocate, author and the founder of Solar Design Associates. Strong's Massachusetts-based company was commissioned to design the array and oversee the installation process, which is expected to be completed by the time the MLB All Star Game rolls around in July.
